Playing Card Plethora / Re: Bicycle Grungeland
« on: December 30, 2013, 05:17:17 PM »
I will start with my opinion and then explain it

I don't like this deck

I don't feel that the artwork taken from a fantastic source is done any kind of Justice.
It feels crammed in. And as far as the concept of a dreary alternate universe... This is created by a spot of blood and the cards being "muddied up"
I was so happy when this was cancelled the first time. Now that it is back, with so many days to reach it's goal, I fear that it may succeed.
I don't say this out of spite but out of the fact that I would love to see a decent deck made using the same artwork and if this succeeds no one would try it.

As far as a darker American McGees Alice, I know Shane tyree was working on a darker deck when he was with Albino dragon. They were going to do that one and for some reason they decided to go with the straight version with "White Rabbit". Which I was ok with as it was a nice deck... however he used the darker version of the Cheshire cat he created which I didn't feel went with the whole feel.
I contacted Erik after the campaign ended (but before Shane got the boot and asked if they would be doing the darker version, at the time he said they would)
But I digress

Deck Reviews! / Re: Battle 55: Sentinels vs Rebels
« on: December 21, 2013, 09:29:59 AM »
When they first came out I was pretty hyped about the Rebels.
Then I got a deck. And it didn't quite do it for me.
I will say the tuck is nicer on the Rebels
But the Sentinels has been one of my go to decks. Can't exactly say why but It seems every one of my cribbage sets has a sentinel deck in it.

So far I got

1 - No Reward
2- No reward
3- No reward
4- 100 pts
5- No Reward
6- 100 pts
7- 100 pts
8 - No reward

Some of those got free spins, but every time I got a free spin I ended up with No reward on the next one.

I mean what if someone comes at you with a banana and a clean deck of cards.
Do you have to eat the cards too?

These will go up in valve.  Probably more in future because they are less well known....

If these do go up in valve, won't the valve get clogged?  :))

Don you old Fogy.
Get with the times and understand what these kids are hip to today.
All you understand is your interwebs.
He is talking about Steam! Valve's online game streaming site.
He is saying if these are as popular as it looks like they will be, Valve will pick them up digitalize them and put them on Steam.

JEEZ Sometimes you can be so obtuse.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Kickstarter "Successful Failures"
« on: December 16, 2013, 07:51:43 AM »
In case you didn't know, your sister site the UC is planning on doing the same thing your trying to do. http://www.unitedcardists.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2597 Interesting reading.  It all makes sense Kickstarter has been around for what 3 years and now we want to show the bad apples.  This will hopefully deter other scammers and bring people to your site for more information. I would say you have some time.  I have noticed a significant decline of activity at the UC.  I wonder why?  At the UC, I do not see a lot of deck creators responding to the posts that people have set up for them.  They do have a lot of lurkers, but it takes people to provide content.

Sister site?  More like second cousin!  :))  Just kidding...  Actually, it would be more like the site of the kid next door...  There's no relation other than sharing some members in common.

The topic refers to a campaign that Mr. Ratledge wants to see to fruition about getting Kickstarter to force a clause into their creator contracts that requires they supply their backers before entering into any retail sale arrangements with vendors.  The thing is, however, that it would dramatically increase the cost of making a deck (and the fact that it would affect ALL projects, not just decks, make it unlikely to pass).

When a designer makes a deck and has a few retailers in place who placed bulk orders for decks, the usual practice is to have USPC break up the shipment to go to the various destinations - for example, Joe Player makes Joe's Deck, he has AceKing, JP and PokerStud52 lined up to buy in bulk, so he arranges for USPC to ship those bulk orders straight to the retailers with the remainder coming to him so he can divvy, pack and ship them to all the backers.  USPC will break up a larger shipment like this at no extra charge, or so I'm told.

If Ratledge's rule went into effect, all the decks would have to be shipped to Joe Player or his fulfillment center.  Then while dealing with shipping out all the tiny one- and two-deck orders, he'd have to have the retailer bulk orders shipped from his place, at his expense, and he'd have to sit on the entire thing until all those other backer orders were completed.  If he got Larry's Mint to make some coins for the campaign and Larry was late on delivering, he's still forced to wait on shipping to the retailers and has all those cards taking up space in either his apartment or at the fulfillment center - which I'm sure would be charging for storage if delivery had to be delayed, since his project is tying up valuable storage space for other projects they've contracted to deliver for other companies.  The problem gets compounded when he's dealing with Larry's Mint (coins), Jane's Print Shop (art prints), Jessica's Dice Emporium and Factory (dice) and Bishop's T-Shirt Extravaganza (custom t-shirts).  A delay from any of them delays shipments from leaving and keeps the cards out of retailers' hands, which they'll only tolerate for so long before canceling the agreement to buy.

It's just a mess to try adding such a requirement, and it would be not just difficult to enforce, but depending on the laws of the various states and countries, it might not even stand the litmus test to determine if it's legal to have such a requirement.

I have noticed a significant decline of activity at the UC. I wonder why? At the UC, I do not see a lot of deck creators responding to the posts that people have set up for them.

That's because the deck creators keep getting banned left and right. It's pretty much the Ratledge Show over at the UC these days, and he's no Don Boyer.

I hope that's a compliment...  :))  Since I think it is, thanks for that.

BTW, has anyone noticed that the UC forum's clock display on the home page is an hour fast?

Actually

I can vouch for Jessica. You will definitely get your dice from Jessica's Dice Emporium and Factory but she did simply take on way too much and is now backed up a good bit.

I thankfully got in on the campaign.
Wish I had picked up more (maybe some to sell) as they are showing up on Ebay now and selling in the $60 - $80 range.

As far as I can (correct me if i'm wrong) - they haven't actually sold yet?

At least one has
I was watching it.
It ended on Wednesday at $80
started at $0.99

there are a few more up now. But not the flow that we saw of federal 52 when they were selling at that price.
I have a feeling fewer people bought these in the numbers that some people bought The Federal in.
Also Lee just said he is keeping them exclusive where Jackson was trading his away and has offered them on his website. (Note: Jackson never said his would be exclusive, just limited.)

Here is a link to the one I am talking about

Yeah. I am going to have to go with the monarchs as well.
The Artifice is slick, but the blue version is actually my least favorite color on those.

My god it's full of stars.

How can I not buy these.
Being the avid board gamer that I am. You had me at "meeple"

One thing I would love to see though.
As you said yourself meeple look the same for each player only the color changes. I would like to see this deck with a different color for each suit.
This isn't unheard of in decks and we have seen a couple decks designed that way over the last year. I think here it would fit with the theme well.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Uncut Sheet Purchase?
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:46:18 PM »
As someone who doesn't open every deck I own. Not to say I don't open decks, as an avid card player I open up a few a week, but now I am getting off topic. It is nice to be able to see and display the art from some of your more favorite decks w/o having to break the seal on the collectible item. That being said when I bought my first uncut sheet I went a little overboard and started buying every uncut sheet I could find. At the precipice of going bankrupt I realized my mistakes. I have neither the wall room of the interest to frame every uncut sheet I own. I weeded through the decks and took out the ones I definitely saw as art and that I would like to keep. My Uusi sheets, my COC Albino Dragon sheets, Federal 52,  and a few others (probably whittled it down to about 15). I am working on selling the rest. As Paul and others have said it is aniche market so they aren't going so fast. But at the right price people will buy them. And for the right deck I will too.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: New Policy at UC

.... This makes so much more sense now.

I read numerous posts complaining or arguing about this policy on UC.
But I never received the email myself, so I never quite knew where the info had come from.
Who knew he came out and directly said it... "Your not welcome here."

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Bicycle Seven Seas - Coming Soon
« on: December 10, 2013, 07:32:29 AM »
I wish deck makers would start designing 5 way backs.
Or maybe if one of the Cthulhu decks could have a non-Euclidean back....

That being said I am pretty fond of this deck. My card group has never worried too much about one way backs. They care much more about the recognizability (is that a word) of the faces, so for the most part they prefer me to stay with "traditional" faces. So this deck would be purely for my collection.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Here to Stay or Gone Tomorrow.

The investment opportunity was never my point here.
The topic was about Decks that seemed like they would be amazing due to hype or design and then just did not hold their luster.

The Gold Crown fits that so well for me.
As I said , I bought into the Hype fully, and had to have these.

The pricing I was talking about was more that I feel lucky that I never bought one for the insane pricing that they were going for at one time and that when the gold fadded to a polished brass on the deck I was able to get rid of the couple that I never was going to use at a bit of a profit (just a bit)

Of course I have to admit to buying a deck or two with the belief I would make a profit ( I am sure all new collectors have)
but once you get bit you hopefully learn your lesson and reel in your habit to an acceptable 2 or 3 decks a release (accept for ones youplan on using of course)

For me my mistake was the Blue Tune deck.
The furor over the deck on the discussion boards made me think that this was going to be "the" deck and when they offered a special white one with 2 bricks I thought to myself "real no brainer."
It certainly was.
Not worth the paper they were printed on now.

ah well
something about a fool and his money.... what does that say about an utter fool

It's got to be the Gold Crown deck for me.
The Black Crown deck was one of the First Custom decks I got.
I say this as custom as for the playing card collector vs. just a regular collector I had been collecting interesting souvenir decks for some years prior to starting as a custom playing card collector.
Any way moving on.

I thought the Black crown was very Slick (and still do)
The slick black tuck case with the foil embossed silver crown felt stylish and definitely screamed custom.

When the Gold Crown craze hit, I bought in. I was devastated when I missed the free give away of the special Crown deck box with the Gold Crown deck.
Thank fully I didn't Jump on Ebay and pay the $450 - $600 people were asking for them.
I was elated to see "the second" chance offer that HOPC was given its customers especially when they were being given with the ornate deck, a deck I was planning on buying anyway.
When my first Gold Crown arrived it honestly felt like holding a brick of gold in my hand, I was so excited.
Then came the offer of HOPC to sell them...  I felt let down a bit as it certainly didn't feel as special to have one. But since it was a "super special mailing list only" deal I felt it was still ok and "Hey I can get a couple more" I always like to have at least 2 of a deck in my collection.

Now, however, that the hype has died down on the deck. I don't find it nearly as exciting. It has truthfully lost it's luster as when I look at the box with honest eyes I can see that the gold is really more of a tan brass with a gold foil crown that gets lost in the tuck case. The deck is not nearly as slick as the Black Crown.
I am glad I never paid more than HOPCs asking price for this deck and also glad that I could sell most of the ones I had purchased at a bit of a profit.
I am still keeping 2 for my collection (as I am a collector) but would not conside owning any others.

Did ANYONE actually pay those prices for the Gold Crown deck?  Insane...

For the special Crown deck box with all the 1st edition crown decks and the gold crown. I assume they paid that, unless the sales didn't go through. I know they were marked as sold on Ebay at the time.
and yeah ... pretty insane

Yes every brick has a group from each tier.
The deck in each tier are randomly selected by you.
This will ensure you get a "rare" deck "uncommon" decks and common decks
Perhaps Raffle is not perfect wording but it got an idea across.

This one is difficult.
Mainly because I have no real opinion towards Smoke and Mirrors. I never found them interesting enough to purchase. I think I have 1 v6 because it came with a set of other cards I picked up.

Where as I liked the Whit lions A I thought they were a good looking and handling deck. Unfortunately I out right hated the white lions B. I thought the boxes were pretty stunning at first but after seeing them for a day or two they became a bit blah. And as far as the cards I am surprised David Blaine put his name on them. I think they feel terrible and look worse. (maybe something Chris Angel would put his name on)

So
I am throwing my vote away on the Smoke and Mirrors

Are we even sure that they sold all 3500 originally.
They may have just put up 2000 and marked them as sold out at that point. With the idea of releasing the rest with another new deck. Like let's say NOC 2.0.

Or maybe they printed more than 3500 and through sly wording only released 3500 the first time they were up and made us think only 3500 were printed

Something about the diamond back of the Bee cards has always appealed to me.
though I do prefer the border less bee back
Neither deck is that exciting so I am. Voting for the one I know best

I'm passing because 1. I don't like the design much.
2. He's Russian. The package will probably reek of vodka

Yeah, on that moment I remembered Alex, that send me nothing instead of 48 Vortex decks, I am waiting about 2 years already. I am Russian, but shipping to USA. And still nothing

Yeah, on that moment I too have nothing to add to this conversation but wish to butt in with a gripe that I have towards Alex, but it is ok because I quoted a previous text.
Alex never sent a get well card to my wife's cat after it ate that bowl of poisoned tuna I left out for it even though it is a cat but living in USA.

Come to think of it

None of you did.

Well as far as packaging it was extremely well packed.
But I think that is because  Jennifer at Ellusionist has put me on the "He returns stuff that isn't perfect" list. (I have had them replace 2 LTD decks, 1 Red artifice, my first gold arcane uncut, 2 other uncut sheets, and about a dozen of their standard decks that showed up damaged.)

As far as how it looks... undamaged. No different than the first one I got except it didn't come with a free Gold Arcane deck... instead it came for free.
It looks a lot like the black arcane sheet I got except with Gold highlights.

Don, there is really no way I can make this sound interesting. Do I have to go on? Have I satisfied your wicked lust for information? Please release me !  (was that too over dramatic?)

Going to go with Stranger and Stranger Ultimate deck.
Though I am not sure if it is truly "Ultimate" I enjoy the transformation decks. I feel that an uncut sheet of these on the wall would look sophisticated and fit in with a mature art coillection
Where as an uncut of the Stokes or alchemy would fit right in on the wall of a Gothy teen girl, right next to her Edward Cullen posters.
