Just wicked… Never fails to impress… As a side note, I have to say, I received my Federal 52 Kickstarter package today and I was just blown away… These are amazing decks… I mean really F%@#!NG nice decks… And yes expletives are necessary… I can't remember the last time I felt this good about a deck of playing cards… Jackson is truly an artist… Congratulations… I wish you continued success…

Since my great great grandfather came over from Poland, at least one member of each generation of my family has served in the Army, so needless to say, I can't wait for these.  Not to mention all the friends I have that have or are still serving in the Army.

It's not safe to make either assumption, really.

Jackson does live in the Central time zone, and it's currently CST, not DST, meaning Central Standard Time.  CDT, or Central Daylight Time, begins in late March.

Kickstarter, however, is located in Brooklyn, NY and uses Eastern time (currently EST) for everything.

Without a clarification, we don't know for certain which is meant, but the safer bet of the two would be EST.  It's safer because if it's not at 12pm EST, that time is also 11am CST and you simply need to wait another hour.  If you thought it was 12pm CST, didn't check until then and realized that 12pm EST was the actual time meant, by that time it would be 1pm EST, one hour past the launch time.

(...and yes, 12pm is indeed "noon", while 12am is "midnight"...)

You're right - they keep moving the dates!  In fact, under the current schedule, we're on "Standard Time" less days of the year than "Daylight Saving Time", making Daylight Saving Time the actual "standard"...  "CDT" rather than "DST (Central)" is the common abbreviation.

I will be going with the original 303 number to stay true to the tradition of the original deck but I will be using my own court cards instead of the original 303 set.

The LTD Army deck will be a 1000 print run and just like the the LTD Independence each LTD deck will come with a display deck as well. The LTD Editions will also come with Gilded edges from USPCC, however the display decks will NOT be gilded with gold foil but still have the LTD card sets.

Yes the premium editions have a unique set of court cards. As well the LTD editions as yet another set of court cards.

  Kings Wild Project

 
One of the most humbling aspect of my upcoming United States Army Playing Card project is the opportunity I have to honor some of the members of my own family who fought and some who died in the line of service. This is my Grandfather Truett Mayes whom I never had the pleasure to meet but who had an incredibly powerful impact on my life.

I wonder what led to the decision do the black ops version in simply black and white. Not to take anything away from it but that sepia toned one just pops in comparison. I guess I am just complimenting the colorized vs the other one here. If I hadn't seen them side by side I would probably appreciate the black and white one more but in this example it just gets overshadowed. I do like how it is a white background without aging though. It'll be nice to have a deck with faux aged and normal white backed versions in the same project. Stellar artwork yet again Jackson. I look forward to each release.

So there are stylistic reasons and technical answers to your questions.  I wanted to convey 2 different types of moods with the premium and the black ops. With the premium I wanted to invoke the feeling of memories and that "old photograph" vibe. I wanted the black ops to be all business as the name exudes. I also wanted there to be a stark contrast from black, white and gold edges. I originally had the old paper texture on the black ops deck but had to change to the white when USPCC informed me that if I gilded the edges I could have ink on the edges as the gilding process would melt the ink on the edge. I also wanted to experiment with my detailed line work on a white "un inked" background.

In the end gilding is something I really wanted to try as I hadn't done it yet so making some of the artistic decisions were easier.

Looks like you're going to fund in the first 12 hours. That's pretty impressive for $45k goal. I really like that the Bicycle branded deck was dropped, keeping them Army branded makes them much sharper as a set. Whether intentional or unintentional from bicycles new stance on KS. Great idea imho.

@Jackson - How did you talk the USPCC into doing a 1500 glided deck run?  I thought their minimum was 15,000.  I know it's costing you an arm and leg to do it.  Even at 15,000 decks the cost was like 1 and a half times a normal deck.  I hope you get the gilding bug.  It fits right in to your ultra LE decks.  I hope you consider doing a silver one.  In the past, I've seen a lot of 1st edition gold ones, but not a lot of silver ones.  I'm just glad Ussi is not the only one bringing the art of gilding back.   Think about it.  Most of your LE decks are just going to sit on someones shelf and not be used cos they are so pretty.

Good News, Bad News.

Let’s start with the bad news.

We will be canceling the project as of Wednesday October 1st. Kings Wild Project, along with my collaborating company Nomades, have decided to go in a different direction for the military decks over all. Because they are in a series, we want there to be continuity throughout the service branches. Since nothing has been printed, changes are much easier in this stage of the game than later.

We could attempt to make the necessary changes on this existing project but the confusion would be outrageous for backers and any kind of fulfillment.


Good News?...

We will be relaunching “Army 2.0” with a different direction in a short time. You will still be able to have an awesome Army deck, give them as gifts and honor the Army! You just have to wait a bit longer.

Just a part of the update, but is being cancelled. Looks like JR and Nomades, do not have the same vision. He also mentioned there being an issue with the gilding, so most likely not an option on the Army 2.0 launch.

I'm looking forward to what changes he has in mind.

Plain and simple, gilding is a costly process that has to be done by hand.  The process to this day has not been automated.

He's right - making design changes to the series as a whole now is much simpler than having to "retcon" things afterwards or simply having an inconsistent series of decks.

I simply beg of him to GO EASY on the number of decks in a project.  Deck bloat is becoming a serious turn-off for me.  A simple project whose decks I really like suddenly costs an arm and both legs if I want the full set before time runs out.  A more gradual roll-out in separate projects makes the decks easier to manage financially, particularly for people wanting either complete sets or simply a healthy number of some of the designs.  When there's more than two or three designs to a project, it just gets tougher to keep track of and there's bound to be some people left dissatisfied.

I will add that while there is a place for a "boutique deck" that has a very short run, too many people are making nothing but boutique decks.  Where is the next Ellusionist, the next Theory11, the next Big Blind Media of the playing card business?  A company that will make a larger print run, will sell decks at a lower price, will print more if the demand justifies it?  Basically, an unlimited custom deck?  There's so very few of them out there now, compared with all these "one-off" decks.

I would just like to say that I agree with Don about the number of decks being offered in a project. Deck Overload?
It's become a turnoff and I can't afford to purchase so many of 3, 4 deck "sets", so I had to do without a few others. I usually buy about 4 decks of each so that I can keep one and play with the rest and it's more ideal because of the international shipping. To ship 1 deck costs about $8 and 4 decks about $16. So when there is a 4 deck project I usually pledge for 2 sets, or just 1 when I'm feeling the pinch that month.
Also, sometimes there might be a deck in the "set" that I don't like, but it gets bundled together in a cheaper price than when purchased or added on seperately.

I'm finding these watercolor images full of motion and action. They're pretty great, this is something I wasn't expecting out of Kings Wild. I don't think great quite covers it though does it? It's not an easy thing to make it look simple and clean yet still capture motion and feel. Excellent work on these. Absolutely top notch on the imagery. Indices are pushed out and placed very well, I like that a lot.

With all those likes, there are of course things I don't like but you guys already know what they are haha. Not breakers for me, I'll be finding my way to pledging for sure. It's only a day away!

Not all rough and gritty styles are necessarily stained or weathered. This was a specific choice combining two of my favorite art styles. It is a mixture of both Japanese watercolor, hand lettered Japanese typography and one of my favorite oil painters Richard Schmid. I also was very inspired by the Japanese conceptual art of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Oh and there will be old and historic elements as well.

Not all rough and gritty styles are necessarily stained or weathered. This was a specific choice combining two of my favorite art styles. It is a mixture of both Japanese watercolor, hand lettered Japanese typography and one of my favorite oil painters Richard Schmid. I also was very inspired by the Japanese conceptual art of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Oh and there will be old and historic elements as well.

I agree that MGS is fantastic, but isn't the artist Ashley Wood, who's Australian?
I love all of his work. Not to digress, but the absolute best Japanese artist is Yoshitaka Amano.

I think the textured background elevates the watercolor-y conceptual game art style of the card faces. I think it'd risk looking a bit "unfinished" without it.

Bama, I think you might have made an error.  He's not claiming that Schmid is the artist of the Metal Gear Solid conceptual art.

For me, it's simply a matter of wait and see.  I like much of what I'm seeing thus far and find it to be a welcome departure from the style of your previous work, Jackson.

But in this case my point is that MGS was not drawn by a Japanese artist, so its not really Japanese conceptual art.
I was being nitpicky, my bad.
MGS is great. Schmid is great.
I'm sure this deck will be great.

Don't sweat it.  I suspect that even there, he was referring to the artistic style rather than the ethnic origin of the artist for the MGS pieces.

Regardless, cool art so far, looking forward to seeing the rest.

I'm actually speaking of Yoji Shinkawa. He is the Japanese artist who makes all the brush like paintings and also title sequences.

As much as I hate USPCC quality, for artwork like this (along with the fact that it's an Army deck), I've got to deviate from my usual "I'm not buying USPCC stuff" stance so that I can add this to my little collection.

Thirty four hours left on this campaign as I type this. That's the friendly reminder bit.
