Hi Everyone,

I would like to let you know that in a little under 2 weeks we will be launching Prism: Day and Dusk - the final decks in the incredible Prism series!

This has been a project in the works for over a year now so it is really exciting to see it finally come to this point. If you have already picked up a deck of the original Prism: Night cards, you will know how awesome they turned out, and I am confident that these next 2 decks will be even better! There are a few bells and whistles which the first deck didn't have and I know they are going to make an amazing trilogy!

Stay tuned for more spoilers and updates, and mark your calendars: May 17th!

Sorry all,

Due to a miscalculation of time, I have to postpone the launch of the Prism decks for 1 week. The new launch date will be TUESDAY the 17th of MAY!

I'll update the launch notice soon :)

Dude, I think this is going to launch big.  It's a sharp-looking deck, unlike any other except the first Prism.

A video isn't thought of as mandatory like it once was.  A great video will help, but a so-so video is better left out!  :))

mmm, I'm not very good at video editing so would rather not do one if possible. Do you think the project page is sufficient by itself without a video?

Look for yourself - how many deck projects have a video today?  You'll find many don't.  As long as you're showing off the deck with lots of great photos, that's better than a video that's anything less than good.  You're selling an inanimate object - you're not showing off its own performance characteristics in a video, so you've only got three other reasons for having a video:
  • Cardistry presentation
  • Comedy routine of some kind
  • Personal presentation
These are all great - but without a good editor, you'd need to do it all in one go, no cuts, and without a music soundtrack - and generic, no-royalty music is more miss than hit.

Better to simply show the goods, if you can't make a proper, entertaining video.  Lots of great stills will work better.

Excellent, no video this time then!

I always thought that it added to the project, but you're right - if it's not fantastic or showing off a new aspect then it probably isn't worth it, thanks!

The Prism campaign is still going strong! We have died down a bit after the first day push, but there's plenty of time to go!

Please visit the page and pick up some decks - I want to get Dusk unlocked with the shiny tuckbox!

Hi Everyone,

The Prism campaign had a great start but seems to have stalled hard. I would like to ask for your advice on why that might be.

I have promoted it to previous backers of other campaigns, gone through social media and various other things, but for some reason the project feels very dead - even with several days of no backers after the initial rush. While I don't expect everything to succeed wonderfully, I am curious and a bit concerned about the lack of response. I did expect to have a decent body of backers from the first Prism project, as well as some from the Pipmen decks, but it seems most have not returned.

I'm going to keep the campaign going, but does anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong? Any suggestions would be helpful to get the momentum back up again.

Thanks

Have you tried getting exposure from playing card websites?  Grant interviews?  Distribute prototype decks to prominent reviewers?

Many projects stall out after a good start - you need to keep finding new backers and re-interesting the old backers.  Tweak the campaign, offer up new sneak peeks at the art, something, ANYTHING that will draw attention.  Remember, you're fighting against at least a couple dozen other playing card projects at any given time.  Collectors will have only so much cash to go around - seek new backers from places that don't have anything do to with cards - design blogs, art forums, etc., anywhere with people that might find your project of interest.

Hi Ben,

The work is, indeed, amazing. I'd been observing a no. of projects for the last couple of months. A no. of projects did look as stalled to me but then they were able to go above the funding near the finish line. Still, you may want to go for what Don said in his response.

That said, I'm pretty sure you will be able to meet the target easily. All the best.

Regards,
Sunish

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately Prism: Day and Dusk was not successful. Due to a commitment with another designer to help launch his deck, I won’t be relaunching Prism until next year. This gives me plenty of time to make any adjustments which might help it next time.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be done better, any changes that should be made, or general advice to help the Prism project succeed the second time around? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to those who supported the project, and I look forward to seeing you with our next one soon :)

Ben

It's possible that having two new versions in the same project was a little too ambitious.  Releasing them in series as separate projects might be more effective.  There's a definite interest, as you did raise a significant amount of money.

Other than that, are there ways you can make the project cost just a little less - your costs as well as costs to the backers?  Lower pricing always attracts more interest.
