Many of you know I'm new to all of this and with that I've noticed that in a short time my taste has changed quite drastically as to what I like in a deck. It's still probably in a very "Infant" stage, and I'm going to assume that it may change again, but I think that's the nature of collecting.

So I was drawn to playing cards by straight Art Decks, something I would have defined as a "Marketing" art deck such as The Anne Stokes Collection. But now I find myself appreciating the subtle "Updates" and "Re imagining" of some decks much more than I did in the beginning.

Decks like the Curator deck, the Seasons decks and obviously the Fed 52's.

So I was wondering, from you long time members/collectors, have your tastes changed? What was your draw in the beginning? Did your tastes change out of necessity, aesthetics over function? or vice versa.

I got started earlier this year backing decks on KS. I wanted everything. I found the Discourse, and learned how to spot crappy decks from good decks. For the most part, if its not printed by USPC. I probably won't buy it. I've received a few decks that weren't, and they suck. They're terrible.

I read a post a wile back. I can't remember who it was, but they summed it up pretty good. There are 3 types of decks. Must haves, maybes, and junk.

For me now. It has to be a must have, or a very strong maybe.
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

I started just buying whatever I could find, very scattershot, and bought some decks that don't see the light of day very often now, decks that I don't consider good decks, or in some cases, even functional.

It'd be great to have someone tell you right off the bat, "Buy this, not that, get those, not these," but you really can't be told, because you have to develop your own tastes and judgment criteria.
