How to detect which threads have already been viewed!

Hey guys, because I am new to these forums, I just wanted to know, how do we differentiate from the threads that we have already read, and the threads with new posts?

Threads with new posts that you have not viewed, will have have an orange icon at the end of the post name that says "New".

There is also two links you can click on at the top of the forum, underneath the area that has the banner and says "Hello yourname". One says " Show unread posts since last visit" and the other says "Show new replies to your posts"
