Well firstly this should go under design/development board or the magic board.

If it is in the correct format for your phone you should be able to copy it over to your phone when you plug it in to your computer.

If your phone doesn't connect to a computer, but is capable of handling email and downloads, you could just email it to yourself.

The only problem is most phones cant handle the file size of a video.

This being the case you would have to compress the file before sending it. You can do that with a few different programs or online.

That really depends on the phone.  I have a phone that can hold an insane amount of video on it, many hours of DVD-quality images and sound.  And it wasn't even the model with the biggest memory!

Unless you're dealing with a dinosaur of a phone only capable of VGA-quality at best, most phones these days are a bit beefier and can handle m4v files or other compressed formats at a good resolution.

You can definitely handle video files!  Just add them to iTunes and sync!

If your videos are in mp4 format, add them to your library in iTunes and they will be transferred into your Movies by default. Sync and the videos will turn up in your iPhone.

If the videos are in wmv or avi format, you have 2 options. You either get a video converter software to convert them to mp4 format on your computer before doing what I have mentioned above, or you can download the VLC app or any of the other third-party video player apps from the apps store and copy your videos into the app folder. Make sure the video app play avi or wmv format videos.

@sabacc when you add the to your itunes it compresses the file. The items you download from itunes are compressed.

A basic file that isn't compresses won't fit onto a phone because of the differences in format and size. Itunes is one of the nice programs that compresses files for you and offers downloads in compressed form

I was referring to the video CODEC in general - they all perform some amount of compression.

But still - he has a bleedin' IPHONE 4 for cryin' out loud!  This is a no-brainer kind of question, unless you have no idea how to use the iPhone...

"A basic file that isn't compresses won't fit onto a phone because of the differences in format and size." No, an SD card will easily hold a video of that length in any common format; not fitting isn't an issue at all.  Whether the phone has the right codec for the job is another matter.

"they all perform some amount of compression"- no, they really don't at all.  Maybe it wouldn't be much of an issue short-time but uneconomical formats can eat up your memory pretty badly if you do that kinda thing a lot.  It's mostly about the settings on the encoding side, though; DPI and resolution in particular.

Regardless, it should be veryesy for you to play that on your phone.

CODECs do indeed perform compression.  In fact, it's an acronym for "COmpression and DECompression protocol".  Some are more efficient than others, to be sure, but they all compress the video to some degree, except for "lossless" CODECs, which are freakin' huge files for video.
