Clockwork La Ville Lumiere deck

The Clockwork La Ville Lumiere deck is the second in the series, and is based on the French city of Paris, and features the Art Nouveau style.

The artwork on the tuck box cover returns on the card backs, albeit in a somewhat modified form. Unlike the previous deck, with the La Ville Lumiere deck the card backs don't feature flip-book animation, but feature a static picture. One obvious disadvantage of having animations on the card backs is that it makes the deck a marked deck, making it less practical to use; this problem is avoided by putting the animations only on the card faces.

To see the flip-book animation on the faces of these cards, see this animated gif. The aim of these animations was to give viewers the sense of holding in their hands a clockwork jewel box in action, and Stephen has certainly accomplished that goal.

The details are absolutely exquisite!  Besides an animated logo, there's a image that slowly rotates to show a change from day (sun) to night (moon), with clouds and sunshine giving way to stars.  But the real highlight is the intricate and moving clock mechanism, which has a 3D feel courtesy of the details.

Where to get them? These animated playing cards are available from the creator Stephen W. Brandt, at his website fig23.com.
