I stumbled upon this a couple days ago:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sarahehthomas/modern-hanafuda?ref=live

I know those are very different from poker cards and don't really fit in a collection, but I still think they could be an interesting item to own, because the cards are pretty, and because I like seeing the variations in card games from different cultures. :)

I'm I'm not mistaken, hanafuda cards were actually pretty popular with yakuza gangsters!  But like tattoos, they've shed at least some of their social stigma in Japan by now - Nintendo even made a hanafuda set with Super Mario characters a while back.  (They used to be a playing card manufacturer before they were a video game company!)

They're very pretty and I'm tempted by them, but I'd never find anyone interested in playing, my girlfriend (wait, now she's my FIANCEE!) would want to hang me, and they'd just end up being another thing collecting dust - I've tried to reduce the number of dust collectors in my life.  It's a shame, too - it's looking less likely that the Kickstart will succeed.  She has under three weeks to go and is barely over half-way to her goal.

They are quite a nice looking deck of cards, but at $20 a deck I can't really just go for decks that look nice that have no functionality to a magician, when I can pick up nice gaffed decks for that amount, of course I'm sure you could make up a really nice routine with this style of cards if your a really creative magician :)
Mystery is the basic appeal of magic. Once the secrets are known, the magician becomes a mere manipulator, an actor in a suspense drama which has little impact because the audience knows the ending in advance.

The original design of hanafuda cards are only $4. I have one but i gotta say its not playing cards in any feel. Its really small, and has nothing related to numbers and suits.

This particular deck is rather attractive, but yes, they're more of a player's deck - and good luck finding players in the States (and most of the rest of the native English-speaking world)...

I've always wondered, how much does a standard Nintendo deck(Not the Mario ones) cost in Japan?

And this specific deck would be made from casino stock and would actually be larger than poker cards. I'd love to see what they look like in a fan. ::)

They would look strange in a fan, I think - no indices and every front looks like a Rainbow deck back!

If they're that big, it could improve their appeal outside Asia.  And they're damn pretty.

Wanna buy some Nintendo hanafuda decks?

No I didn't but I do appreciate the art! Like @Sabacc said they are damn pretty, that's for sure. It's a nice item but there really isn't any room for it in my collection.

I was asking how much they cost in Japan, since Phantom is there. ::)

Online stores seem to have them somewhere between $15 and $20, which isn't too bad. They look like really thick stock.

The site I pointed you to states that plastic ones are made on thick vinyl - hanafuda cards appear to have more in common with mah-jongg tiles than poker cards as we know them.

I don't know the deck.
Could you give me a link of picture for me?
I may be able to find out the price/

I think he meant "in general" - what would some typical Nintendo hanafuda decks cost in Japan?  Not the videogame promotionals, but the more standard, traditional decks.
