The more general lesson, which any business owner could and should take from this, is "Prepare for any outcome, and don't count on predictions and speculations being accurate".

I agree, there is absolutely zero reason for a relaunch and I'm not sure I would back it either. Cancelling a project will only hurt your reputation. I also agree that a lot of creators would love to be in your position. Also kind of makes me worry that you want to cancel a project at this stage!

I'd have to disagree on this, after hearing the game plan involved.  There was a little miscalculating in terms of getting in all the desired features, and it makes sense in this case to make a better deck and offer the second one as a stretch goal instead of making two stripped-down decks and trying to build up the features in stretch goals that may never be met.

I can't see that he miscalculated anything. This is his fourth project. The other 3 projects did over 40k each. The way I see it. He stripped the decks down thinking he would get the same funding as the others, then add all the bells and whistles.
Here is part od the original update about canceling.

As the Legacy struggles forward we have been considering different options for this project and our next. We have gotten plenty of good reactions to the decks and had big plans to continue the Legacy series as long as there was a demand for it. However, it doesn't seem that time is now. Before we go further, no we are not abandoning the Legacy decks. We love our Legacy decks and do plan to release it.
At over 90% funded with well over 2 weeks left. He was betting on overfunding, and realized it wasn't going to happen. To put in in card terms. he tried to bluff, and got called.

Exactly right, Rob. This is a classic case of overconfidence that came back to bite them in the ass. I guess you could say they were spoiled by their previous successes, and made the fallacy of predicting the popularity of a brand new deck based on their previous (unrelated) work.

Personally, I'd rather see something like adding $1 on to the price of every deck to get to where they can add at least some of the stuff they were planning on adding. I'd definitely pay slightly more to get a better product if that's what it would take. Obviously taking a poll on it first, of course, as it might just be me who'd be okay with that.

AtomSmash: Are you located in the US? Because if you're not, that'll limit the amount of decks by quite a lot :P

4PM says in the KS comments:
"..you can't simply order whatever number you want, that's not how the USPCC works. You either order 2,500, or 5,000. Unless something has changed in the last year or so, that's how it's always been. 2,500, 5,000, 7,500, 10,000, 15,000."

In other words, if you want to order 3000 decks, which is above the 2500 "minimum", USPCC won't let you... you have to order 5000???

This doesn't jive with what i've heard from other creators discussing their final print runs for their projects... but then i've never been through the process myself so i guess i don't really know.

Is this true?

I don't think this sounds plausible either, but you never know with USPCC. It wouldn't surprise me, but hopefully someone who knows can supply us with a definite answer.

They are apparently changing this deck's borders from white to black.

I'm with Don and Rob.

I also think a hybrid deck just doesn't work with this theme, it's an homage to the classic rider backs which is red and blue. Nothing else would work as well.

I really like bottoms. Oh, you mean the pictures? ;D

Assuming the only difference is the side ornaments on the front of the box, I don't mind them being there. So bottom one, I guess.

Somehow, I never managed to acquire a taste for Elite decks.  Pass.

Me neither. Easy pass for me.

Good for them to have found a recipe that works for them though.

I was so happy when this was cancelled the first time. Now that it is back, with so many days to reach it's goal, I fear that it may succeed.
I don't say this out of spite but out of the fact that I would love to see a decent deck made using the same artwork and if this succeeds no one would try it.

It took 28 days to raise barely 7k, so I doubt it will reach 15k in the next 16 days.

There should be a USPCC minimum print run of 2,500 (or more, depending on their order size) so no matter how exclusive the group that it's offered to, there should be a decent supply on eBay soon. They won't be cheap, at least initially, but it's a cheaper alternative than joining their club, if you don't want to for whatever reason.

I believe E usually prints 5000 of their "limited" decks, so you're probably right.

Right now, there isn't an option to buy jacksquat.  Patience, young grasshoppers...  All of this is RUMOR, other than the facts that a) the deck exists, b) only Black Club members will have access and
c) it's the LAST Artifice design E is making.

Bah, I've heard that one before. Not that I don't expect them to keep such a promise, but I won't be surprised if they don't.

When did you hear it?  I don't recall it, but then again, I'm forgetf...what were we talking about?  :))

Not from E I think, at least not this particular statement. Off the top of my head D$D said this after S&M V6.

When you get to a certain point you treat all major card producers in the same cynical way. None of them are perfect, that's for damn sure  ::)

- October by Brad Fulton, DD.
- Ultimate Deck by Stranger and Stranger, DD.

Regarding the October deck, I wouldn't count decks that have repeating courts as "fully costumized".

Gonna quote a french poster on UC (Oswin):

Quote
So I am shocked to see this game The guy has not even done any research on our flag. The white symbolizes the monarchy, then see the King Louis XVI crowned with a red back, however, a mistake.
Red usually symbolizes the bloodshed, then why did the sash white back ....

In short, this deck is not for me ... I go my way.

(Google translator sorry)

He sent an email to the creator about this, to which he replied:

Quote
Hey Oswin,

Thanks for feedback. I figured I would probably mess something up historically. It was originally supposed to be two decks. Just red and blue. The white came in as a third extra deck as a way to tie in the two decks. Unfortunately, I think it would be weird to switch the colors right now, so I'll probably keep it the way it is.

Sorry if it offends you ;_;

And my own reaction to this:

You know, I probably would have pledged for these if I hadn't found out about the points Oswin made. It would be a much better collection piece if you could actually say stuff like "...and since the red in the french flag represents the bloodshed...". And I was late for the triple EB as well.

There's also the fact that to see the differences in the courts and how they fit together you have to take out and look at all 3 decks at once. Each deck by itself isn't really that interesting, and the back designs are kinda boring.

And "it would be weird to change the colors now" isn't really a good reason. Sounds like the creator just thinks it fits better in his own head, and would rather have it that way than historically correct. Doesn't give me a good vibe.

Pass.

Welcome, Bill! Thanks for the fascinating read :)

May I ask how/where the Legends decks fit in with the other decks you mentioned?

Not that this isn't a good idea, but: If the goal is to store the bulk of your collection, wouldn't you rather have something bigger than a brick box?

Big thread on playing card storage (I assume linking to other places is ok as long as it's relevant)

Deck Reviews! / Re: Battle 57: Holiday Battle! Santa Back vs Holiday Back
« on: December 24, 2013, 05:42:24 PM »
Also have to go for the two-way Holiday back. A two-way Santa back would have won for sure!

I just want to point out that this battle is for the original santa backs. Not the merz67 maiden back version.

Hadn't heard of this before, that's just sad. If there's one thing the world of playing cards does not need, it's more merz decks.

43
That card back is slick. I see these sales going well beyond the traditional collector. Get these sold in PXs by next Xmas maybe?

Great job, and I look forward to seeing this type of quality for the Marines....

Back? It looks more like a tuck box to me.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Daniel Madison Rounders, Players, Dealers...???
« on: December 24, 2013, 05:00:28 PM »
Handling for the rounders and dealers are pretty much the same. I believe that Jake from E said that indeed many various types of stocks and finishes were tested before coming up with a final combination.

I believe the exact wording was "over 50 different stocks and finishes". To anyone who knows even a little bit about what's available at USPCC, this is a pretty ludicrous statement.

Oh, let them have their fun.  I welcome revivals of old topics, as long as there's something relevant to add.  :))

Well, I DID resist posting a much meaner picture  ;)

46
I'm gonna go ahead and post a sad face in Magikfingerz's honor, for them being Kickstarters. :(

Things are going great for Kings Wild, and I have some other plans I'm working on that will be off of Kickstarter. For me Kickstarter isn't broke yet so I'm not gonna try and fix it.

With that said I'm trying to make strategic decisions and moves to get me out of the Kickstarter cycle, because I don't think it's wise for my new business to keep all my eggs in one basket.

Ah shucks! Well, good to hear you're planning on moving away from it. Can't argue with the "not being broken" part  :P

47
Wow, that's incredibly... boring.

Can't figure out why people are not interested in the deck.  Is it the slightly oversized pips and undersized indexes?  Is it because the indexes are to close together? Is it the large boarder on the courts cards?  Is it because the court cards lost it's suit and now are hard to distinguish at a distance.   Is it the grayish spades and clubs color?  Is it the oversized design of the Aces?  Is it the Uk dollars putting off American backers.  Is it because they don't have a video nor have they connected to Facebook and have twitter listed as their website.  Is it because the lack of updates and not engaging backers.  Are they promoting their deck?  I like the back of card and the box.

I think it's just that it's not USPCC and that the design is, quite frankly, kinda meh. It looks like something you'd find at a yard sale, which isn't to say it's not a nice design, it's just nothing special.
