"Young Artists Custom Playing Cards (K-12 & college students)"
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/179351571/young-artists-custom-playing-cards-k-12-and-colleg

$5,000 goal
$10 per deck
$10 International shipping
No word on who will do the printing (and no mention of USPCC).

This is not an already-designed deck.  Instead, it's a project.  The vision is that students will submit entries for specific cards and a "panel of judges" will select the "best" entries for each card, assemble them all and viola! ... a deck!  You do not have to be a backer to submit artwork.  There are a bunch of rules as to what grades of students are supposed to produce what cards, etc., etc.

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

This totally takes the cake for lazy design.  "Oh, I have no design, I want a bunch of kids to make it instead of me, but I want to be the one collecting all the money for it.  So, send me some art and fork over some cash - wait, I mean 'invest' in 'my' project..."  Zero art talent required, zero design talent required.  Instant deck, just add children...

I would love to say that this project will crash and burn in ignominy and be quickly forgotten, but it's pretty surprising some of the things people will invest in.  This will have the interest of soccer moms, folk artists and their fans, people wanting to "support the children", maybe even pedophiles - but I don't see a lot of support coming from the playing card community...

I wouldn't be surprised if they were printed at home on his inkjet printer...

With so many of the decks on KS, it seems that the "creator" thought "How can I cash in on playing cards without paying an artist?"

...and I'm hoping that's exactly what the hopeful artists' parents see about this project as well.  But what happens if he manages to get the funding but not the artists for the project?

You have 54 pledges instantly, who wouldn't want to buy their kids art on a playing card?  I'm going to take pictures of graffitti and put pips and numbers on them.  Viola, instant art deck and no money down.  Don't get me wrong, this is a classroom project at best and if my kids class were doing it I'd buy a deck.  It just doesn't seem fitting for KS unless the money goes to support an art center where these kids go to perfect their craft (at making playing cards). :)

Okay, I should have read the project first.  I made the assumption this was done.  I didn't realize that he is asking people to create the art after the project finishes.  And no guarantees on whose artwork will be used.  This is a stupid idea!
