I will tell you, the deck looks cool and all... However, marketing or no marketing, I could really do without the back story of uncle Jimmy and Old Vegas... Can you say... Overkill?

Weren't there a few guys who actually thought the backstory on this deck was REAL?  :))

Yes, big-time overkill.  Jimmy "Ace" Fulton, indeed.  And the "vintage" (Photoshopped) photo, too...  Someone's really laying it on thick here.

I suspect they're "concerned" about the sales numbers on the Fulton series.  The original deck, Fulton's Clip Joint, is still available, and only USPC knows how many decks they ordered - I've been told by a reliable source who shall not be named that they typically order around 20,000-30,000 on each deck run.  For the Fulton's Chinatown deck, they announced for the first time ever how many decks they made - 5,000.  And it still took around five months to sell out.  Smoke and Mirrors, these are not.

And the part I find hilarious?  I can call Dan and Dave all sorts of screwed-up nasty things if I felt like it, and they'd never know.  Their main customer service guy informed me that they DON'T READ collectors' forums like this and United Cardists!  I could say their decks smell of cow dung, wouldn't make a bit of difference to them.

Imagine owning a toy manufacturing company and never going out to toy stores or toy fairs to listen to what kids are saying about their toys...  If you ask me, that's either arrogant, clueless or both.

Welcome to the internet.

The S&M decks are one of their biggest cash cow, so why should they spend so much effort redesigning them when they can just swap the colors and still sell the same amount? Yes, that probably makes them arrogant, but why should they care when they can laugh all the way to the bank. I'm not trying to defend them, just applying my typical cynicism.

I prefer to think of S&M as the goose that's laying the golden eggs.  It's only a matter of time before the eggs stop coming, before people figure out the hype and get tired of shelling out cash to them.  Their S&M cards are good, but they're hardly the Holy Grail of card design, and the color change stuff is both lazy of them and boring to us.  But they're on the hook for maybe a half-dozen releases around late fall/early winter, and they're selling at a much slower pace than any of the S&M releases - even when they cut the production run shorter.  Their looking at their "flagship" product to save the day.

But that's not my main point.

Imagine you own a magic store.  Customers come in all day, browsing, buying, trying out new tricks on each other.  But you never see them unless they're plunking down the cash.  You and your register are in a booth, shrouded and insulated from the rest of the store.  If a customer talks to you directly, you listen - but anything they say outside of your booth, you never hear it and aren't interested in hearing it.  I can practically hear some Wizard of Oz character standing at the booth door, saying "Nobody gets to see the Wizard, no one, no how!"

That makes no sense.  They don't hear the pulse of their customers (and potential customers).  Designers and employees of some decent-sized card/magic/cardistry companies pop in here all the time, listening to what we're saying, hearing that pulse.  Some even chime in, and not only on topics about their own products.

I'm putting this argument to bed by saying, "That is NOT how I would run an Internet-based, Internet-dependent business in this day and age."

It looks like the photo was similar to something they did with the release of the Vintage Plaid decks.  They put up a video talking about a new product while a pack of the cards were sitting on the table.

This time, the photo is part of the ad campaign for the new Victorian Close-Up Pad.  Now with vintage Italian leather, it goes for a whopping $250!

I'm just curious about where the hell you get vintage leather that hasn't already been used in some other product.  Are there cellars somewhere with bolts of this stuff aging for years and years or something?  Were they someone's drapes?

I agree with you Evan. The backs look simple and very nice. Love the color. They seem very elegant and remind me of some old saloon decks my grandpa owns. Pretty cool!

Thanks for that update - it was EXTREMELY informative...  :))  I had NO IDEA they'd be coming "very very soon"!

What color are these going to be?? Instagram annoys me sometimes because everything looks so different on there! When they release these there had better be a clear un "vintage" picture because even though I've seen the box I don't feel like I really have. I hope that makes sense haha

Really?  You think they're all that and a bag of chips?  To me, it's meh.

Well, the Chinatown deck was photographed to look red and it turned out to be orange.  This one looks orange in the photo, so I'll guess something close to banana yellow...  :))  When oh when are they going to get that camera fixed?

yea, i absolutely love them. And from the pics I've seen of the cards, they'll have like jerry's nugget, just the two logos on each side of the card, which I love... So maybe not a gross, but certainly a six-pack or more...

Am I the only one who doesn't find jerrys nuggets to be amazing looking?? the first time I saw them before I knew what they were I thought they looked like skateboard wheels! I'm not sure if people have been brainwashed by the rarity of these cards to think they're beautiful or what. I mean  I understand that they're revered for their extraordinary handling (I still would love to try these out one day) but they're by no means great looking. I hope this isn't off topic but I say all this because I feel Fulton and the twins are attempting to utilize a style that to
 me... has no style.

The color of these are actually going to be orange. Not an orange like the Chinatown decks though.

I absolutely love the look of the back and the back design. I really cant wait to see the fronts of the cards.

It sounds like this deck is coming this coming week. Brad Fulton has been tweeting a few things mentioning this coming week.

Nope. I agree with you Darryl on many points you've made. I think that wen buying a 250$'s worth deck, you unconciously convince yourself that the deck is beautiful.
As for this deck, I find the color of the box too light, and it isn't appealing to me.

Uh, you do know that practically every casino deck on planet Earth has the same layout with a logo in each half of the back, right?  If that's what makes them beautiful to you, then you must REALLY love casino decks...

Even the magicians who made this deck famous never thought they were attractive.  They used them in their acts because they were cheap, durable and improved with age.  At the time, they were fifty cents a pack from the gift shop!  The red/blue color combination and derrick logo are really kind of hideous.  If this was just some low-price deck sitting behind the counter at the 7-11 and not some famous "wunderdeck", practically everyone would think they were crappy-looking.  If they were cheaper than Bikes or Bees, they'd consider bringing them home for poker night, but certainly not because they were beautiful.  Most poker players care more about what's on the front than the back.

Maybe they have some changes in design. At least at the box, cause it should look like the black SM v1-3

Wait a sec.

Dan/Dave posted a picture with a number "7" in it.

I hear Brad Fulton's been spitting out similar images all week.

And somehow, this brought you to the conclusion that the next deck to be released would be "Ace Fulton's Casino" and not "Smoke and Mirrors, version SEVEN"?  As in the number 7??

I think I know a few neurologists who might be interested in the way you think...  :))
