Playing Card Plethora / Re: Mantecore Playing Cards LIVE on IndieGoGo
« on: June 18, 2015, 03:46:48 AM »
For those who have concerns about IndieGoGo. This project is fixed funding. That means all or nothing. So if the project doesn't fully fund. You will get your money back :D ....................eventually!  >:(

This is one of those decks when figuring cost per deck, considering shipping. It makes sense to get at least 2.
1 deck is $10 + $7 US shipping = $17 per deck
2 decks are $19 + $8 US shipping = $13.50 per deck
6 decks are $51 + $15 US shipping = $11 per deck

77
Great articles as usual.
It will be interesting to see how much the Titanic cards end up selling for.

There's something fishy about the funding. For the longest time it was stuck at 68% then it just jumped to 92% with 4 backers pledging $2,269 in one day. That's over $567 per backer unless it was just one really enthusiastic backer throwing all that cash in.

Ordinarily, I would agree that something smells rotten in Denmark.  However, Steve Guistolise has two previous projects under his belt, one of which was a success and made it into people's hands.  I mentioned earlier that I got an email from CollectablePlayingCards.com about this deck - it could be that he's gone into some kind of financing arrangement with them and they dropped a fat stack of cash on it now.  It's hard to say with a strong degree of certainty, especially with CPC involved.  They've delivered literally dozens of decks by now (though it seems more like hundreds) without dropping the ball as far as I know.  They're not pretty decks, not to my eyes, anyway, but they are Bicycle decks...

Here's the web version of the email I received.

This probably explains a lot!

Classics Playing Cards

Chicago, IL

My name is Steven and I am an entrepreneur. I have created Classics Playing Cards for the collectors of the world. I love the classics and I will make sure to create decks that will stand the test of time. My father, Mike Guistolise, introduced me to customizing playing cards, which I have always been fascinated with. He owns one of the largest online magic sites, magictrickstore.com. He also owns collectableplayingcards.com.

79
I merged the two.

This project is really close to the same as this one that was tried last year. The artwork is very similar, but a different designer.

Vincent's Playing Cards - Van Gogh (Canceled) by John Rangel

Did CPC buy the rights from John Rangel- rip him off, or did they both just do a lazy job of copy and paste of actual Van Gogh work?

The Conversation Parlor / Theft is always theft!
« on: June 14, 2015, 01:28:48 PM »
To me this may be the most important post I've made. This is not just about one picture being stolen. this is about every card designer who has had there decks counterfeited, every magician who's tricks have been exposed on You Tube, and whether your a professional photographer or just a fan that takes pictures. If someone uses your photo to make money, and doesn't have your permission. That's stealing.

Tony is one of the best at photographing cards, and he should be compensated.

As fans, collectors, magicians, and artist. How do we stop this from happening? How about our wallets!

So about a week ago The Blue Crown used one of my images on their RARE sale without, at the very least, asking if they could. This is a constant issue with my images and I'm getting a little tired of it. So I sent Alex Pandrea an email with an invoice for one time use of my image. It read as follows:

 "Hello Mr. Pandrea,

On 06/07/2015 your company The Blue Crown launched a sales promotion which included an image of the Branded Obsidian Playing cards. The image was used without permission or compensation.
The original image was photographed by myself and is located on my website at www.sparkzcollector.com as well as my Social Media outlets such as Facebook.
This image is protected under the US Code: Title 17 – COPYRIGHT LAW Link: http://copyright.gov/title17/circ92.pdf

Attached is a statement for the one time use of this image to be paid in full upon receipt.

 Thank you,"

Alex Pandrea and The Blue Crown Part Two, the response. There were a million ways Mr. Pandrea could have responded to my email that could have ended with me saying "Please take the proper actions next time" but his opinion on using others material, along with the emails entirety itself, made me decide to draw a bit of a line in the sand. Once again, I encourage people to share this with others.

I'll add in, if the deck is marked, you are also doing 52 different backs as well. So there is a whole lot of extra art work. Printing companies do charge more for each additional back design as well.

Animagique Playing Cards by NoirArts (NPCC)

Quote from: Roman Kotiv
Animal-fantasy styled playing cards, printed by NPCC in Europe. Artwork created by Denis Sirotinin

Quote from: Roman Kotiv
"Animagique" ("animal" - an animal, "magique" - a magical) Decks - are fine example of modern digital painting in the style of animal-fantasy. Suits presents "races" of animals: cats, rhinos, elephants and primates; characters are anthropomorphic, and at the same time are endowed with features, not peculiar to the species in the reality.

Besides high artistic performance among the advantages of the deck should also be noted polystylism of the images - traditional "French" suits in the corners of all the cards, "Swiss" (roses, bells, acorns, shields) - the main field of numerical cards, "Italian-Spanish" (Cup coins, mace, sword) - on kings. Backside is decorated with elegant, and at the same time rhythmic Celtic ornament. All artwork created by Denis Sirotinin.

Only 700 sets will be ever printed and will be limited for Kickstarter backers only. Each deck will have numbered seal.

Stars of Magic Collectors Edition

Quote from: Lo Scarabeo
On occasion of the 26th World Championship of Magic in 2015 (with Rimini - Italy - as the host city), Lo Scarabeo is making a celebration double deck dedicated to the history of magic and to the artists that made it: Alexander Herrmann, Giuseppe Pinetti, Robert-Houdini, Harry Kellar, Chung Ling Soo, and of course Harry Houdini among others...

Quote from: Lo Scarabeo
The two decks come with of course a different back (BLACK and WHITE), but also with 56 cards (BLACK) and 54 (WHITE) fully illustrated and totally different (illustrations in the BLACK deck are different from the illustrations in the WHITE deck), in total 108 different illustrations.

The BLACK deck includes 2 extra cards (a "3 1/2" card for a simple and funny magic trick and a card with the front totally white).

Card backs are one-way (have subtle differences between top and bottom), useful to a variety of tricks:

My Fifth Deck

This year, I've been creating my fifth deck, Name of the Game, which has a sports theme. Below is the 10 of Hearts card that I posted online this past week (if you'd like to follow me on Instagram, my screen name is @emmanuel_jose). Keep an eye out for the Name of the Game deck after this year!

Overall, I like the design but I have two questions.

1) What's with the court faces?  This looks like another deck's courts that I've seen before.

2) Why do the backgrounds of the cards appear different from card to card in some of the photos, like they're slightly different shades of white/ivory?

I'm not sure about the court faces, but these are just renderings for the KS project. That is probably why the color is off a little.

What is "an unbeatable price" and where are they for sale?

chas0039, they will be on KS 6/17/2015. I'm not sure what the price is going to be, but I've spoken with Anthony a little bit about the deck. The idea behind the deck is like a house deck. A users deck. Similar to what Paul Carpenter is doing with the Encarded Standards. Think of TriKard as a brand- like Bicycle, Encarded, Kings Wild, Legends.......

VIRIDIAN Playing Cards KS

VIRIDIAN
Beautifully crafted exquisite deck of playing cards. At an unbeatable price. Designed by Ade Suryana, Viridian
playing cards feature a custom vintage design, reimagined courts, a beautifully crafted tuck case and a stamp
bearing an intricate custom design. A deck that is as beautiful as it is functional, Viridian is the first in Trikard’s
new line of Signature playing cards - versatile for magic, card flourishing or even just a game of poker.

A modern twist inspired by the classics.
Viridian combines distinctive design with the peerless quality of Legends Playing Card Co. The beautiful
typography is based on vintage typeface and inspired from old Billheads and ephemera. The tuck is also
elegantly adorned with beautiful organic patterns which is especially striking. Viridian will be meticulously
printed by LPCC, well known for their innovation, attention to detail with exceptional durability, ultra-precise
printing registration and the ‘glass like’ edges of their signature ‘Diamond Cut’ process.

Entirely new, yet immediately familiar.
From the moment you take the Viridian cards out, you will be comfortable using them. The deck looks amazingly
fresh. But it’s visually reminiscent of what you’re used to seeing, and is designed around familiarity. The pips on
Viridian have been given an update with timeless custom suits and a bigger font for the lettering and numbers.

Meticulously designed from the ground up by hand.
The court cards are stunning and each card has a different face and a different arcane-styled outfit which looks
amazing with the theme color: green and deep red. This gives a good balance of having a beautiful design
while keeping the integrity of a standard deck of playing cards.

Beautifully crafted. Sure to draw compliments every time the cards are cut.
The Viridian features an intricate, mirror image floral design on the card backs inspired by traditional playing cards.
The attention to detail and craftsmanship, makes this deck truly unique and one of a kind.

Inspired by vintage design and refined by modern aesthetics.
The Ace of Spades features a beautiful intricate design that is bold and stylish. The abstract floral pattern adds
to the elegance and identity of Viridian.

Will this be on Kickstarter?  Any date?
I don't know of any date, but Lorenzo is pretty good about not starting a new project on KS until the previous project is completed and shipped. His No. 17 project is projected to ship in July, but I believe he is running a little early. Fingers crossed :D

Rob, I'm starting to think you take perverse pleasure in bringing us decks like this.  :))

I've been busy working on a project for the last few weeks, so I haven't been round much- reason for posting several decks.

I look at it this way. Just because I don't like this deck, and several other decks I post, it doesn't mean somebody else won't like them.  ;)
If it's a bad deck, and we have a constructive conversation about it. Then maybe one of the creators will be helped.

96
I agree, Don is wise.  But no matter how you spin it, I am forced into buying something I don't want.  No Sale.

Fortunately, missing my sale won't cost you a thing.

I really don't see the forcing thing here. It's not buy a brick or 2 to get a deck. I'm in at the $44 early bird, so I'm going to get 1 of each deck. No forced extra's of each. I know the Omnia Illumina was a stretch goal, and would have gotten 2 Oscura decks, but I assumed the stretch goal would be met.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Question on Modern Decks
« on: June 04, 2015, 09:05:11 AM »
As value goes, sometimes I make a purchase because I know I'll never be able to get that deal again. For example when I got the chance to purchase nearly fifty decks of JAQK playing cards for a little over $225, I knew that I would never have this opportunity again, and since it's my all time favorite deck, I just had to.

now that is a good deal, but I don't think I will buy 50 of them.. that is a supply for a lifetime.

50 decks would be overkill for me to, but for anybody that does magic or cardistry. They could go pretty quick. At $225 that was a hell of a deal. loldudex2 could have easily tripled his money.

...... it is satisfying when decks I buy become sought after by other collectors.   Not financially rewarding, because I have never sold a deck and don't plan to start.   But psychologically rewarding.   I don['t get the impression that I'm weird in this respect (though anybody who collects playing cards has got to be a bit weird), and I think this is probably an element of collecting for a lot of collectors, irrespective of what is being collected.

I usually don't buy on a perceived value, but since I buy several decks through KS. Sometimes it makes since for me to buy a few extra. When you consider separate shipping, sometimes it can save you a couple dollars per deck when buying multiples. I didn't sell any of my decks for the longest time. I had several extra decks that I ended up selling earlier this year. I made a great profit on some. Some not so much, but I didn't lose any money.

If you ever start collecting vintage decks, you will notice a different mind set. A lot of collectors will sell really rare decks, because they want to share that history, so to speak. They keep and cherish it for a while, then pass it on.

BIOptiSonic Me

Quote from: Stanley Weddington
BIOptiSonic Me is a collaboration between visual artist Stanley Weddington and musical artist Brian E. Paulson. "BIOptiSonic" is the joining of the words "BIO" + "Optic" + "Sonic" and represents the biologically resonant optics and sonics of the video artwork produced by the collaboration. This Kickstarter is to raise funds for the Internet infrastructure to provide Video On Demand (VOD) services for BIOptiSonic Me videos. The first video featured by the BIOptiSonic Me VOD service will be the most recent work of the collaboration - 'FloWith It'. All backers of this project will be able to stream and/or download the 'FloWith It' video at full 1080p digital HD resolution at any time. Also, all backers of this project will be able to select from the 50,400 fractal images which make up the 'FloWith It' video as their unique project artwork. This artwork can be used to produce a deck of playing cards that the backer is the only one in the world to own. Backers can also chose to have their artwork Giclée printed on museum quality canvas. I will be working with each individual backer on image selection and orientation and potential modifications to make the artwork 2-way for the card backs. All card deck art will be full-bleed edge to edge.
