Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Re: How To Break In A Deck free Ebook
« on: January 02, 2014, 12:26:03 PM »
In my opinion, that MagicShop.Co.uk Ebook lacks any real information. Plus, it's a compilation of other sources with little original material.

Not trying to float my own boat, but you should try this one instead. While it's for the 605s, the info is relevant for any deck of cards: BREAK IN YOUR PLAYING CARDS.

Hope that helps.

Asher

I'm looking to begin my vintage deck collection. I'd be interested, but I doubt anything I have would be of equal value. I have a ton of modern decks, and if you're really looking to get just about anything for the deck, there's bound to be something of interest.

Nice! Let's start talking. Throw out a few deck names that you think I should have in my collection. Something is bound to stick.

I'm also rated pretty highly on the Trader Testimonials board.

Nice. I will have to look further into that. I assume if we were to make a trade, we'd also write testimonials once the transaction is complete. Yes?

I chuckle a little seeing your comment about the 25 posts to get to the STISO board. It makes me wonder what Don/Admin would have said/done had you posted this before 25 posts :D.

He would have probably sent me the standard 'you need 25 posts' letter, like he's supposed to. My diplomatic immunity doesn't extend that far.

As for the trade, I suspect many on this board, me definitely included, have no idea about vintage decks like these, hell I didn't even know what a pinochle deck was until a few weeks ago.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity for you (or anyone interested) to learn more about these types of decks.

"any sealed custom deck USPC has made within the last 10 years" is really, REALLY broad.
Is there any chance you could add some detail to make it easier for people to offer stuff? Colour, theme and/or designer maybe?

I tried to keep it broad to spark discussion. But I understand what you mean about detail and making it easier, so I will narrow things down a bit to help you. Kickstarter, CARC, D&D, T11, E, HOPC, USPC, etc. Basically anything custom made within the last 10 years.

I don't know how much your vintage deck is worth or whether you keep up with the topics here but it seems you'd be wise to take precautions against fraud.

I appreciate the heads-up. In the scheme of things, this deck isn't that valuable unless you're:

  • an A. Dougherty collector
  • a pinochle player/collector
  • or if you're looking to start collecting older decks

Make an offer, and see what happens...

355
Finally! I built up over 25 posts to be here, so I'm going to try this out.

TRADE: I would like to trade this sweet 1972 USPC A. Dougherty Pinochle Deck for something decent of yours.

Several images for your viewing pleasure:

Basic Info about this deck:
MANUFACTURER: United States Playing Card Company
YEAR PRINTED: 1972 (Cincinnati, Ohio)
TYPE: Pinochle
# OF CARDS: 48 cards
BACK DESIGN: Circle Back - Andrew Dougherty
COURT STANDARD: USPC Standard Index
CONDITION: Grade- Excellent. Deck has been played with, but all cards are present. The tuck box is in perfect shape, and the lower half of the original cellophane is still attached (wrinkle free). Overall, pretty decent for a 42 year old pack of playing cards.

OTHER NOTES: Do not confuse this deck with the same one BadPete69 is displaying here. While they have similar features, his is much older, and worth a lot more.

OTHER TERMS: This deck will ship from Canada. I will pay to ship it to you, and you will pay to ship yours to me.

Because this is my first trade, and I'm trying to get a fundamental understanding for how all of this works, I'm willing to trade this 1972 deck for just about anything within reason. I will take any sealed custom deck USPC has made within the last 10 years.

PM me if you have questions or want more info. Let the trading begin!

Lee Asher

ps. I hear your first trade is the luckiest trade!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Vintage - Antique Meanings

If we consider the modern age of collectible cards as having started with the Bicycle Black Tiger by Ellusionist in 2007, then the earliest a modern deck would land on the vintage list would be 2027, about thirteen years and two days from now.  To me, this seems like a good cut-off point.

Not trying to nit pick, but I think it was 2004, not 2007. Plus, it doesn't make much of a difference in the context of this discussion.

A friend from France just sent me a video that will surely create debate. He promises this is not a joke, and swears it actually works. I have not tried this method, but if you're thinking about it, I suggest you proceed with caution. Make your own judgement call.

Watch Fred Villemin clean his 1965 Sahara Tahoe playing cards with a ripe banana!

Quote me ... "I need to examine what's happening to the paper (under a microscope) before I start rubbing any fruit on my Nuggets!"

Would you try this?

That's fun! I saw a Kickstarter project that gave you a way to rubberband some macro lenses to your tablet/mobile device. Are you using the same thing?

Those of you who are on my mailing list, you'll already know about this. For those who are not, I've decided that it's my job to leave quality breadcrumbs for future generations of magicians. But more specifically, as the center for quality magic information on the web, to try and guide you in the best possible direction in order for you to grow as an individual artist.

The time has come to connect ideas, and take it to a new level. Enter the MAGIC VIDEO BLOG.

My intentions are to inspire you with amazing vintage magic clips. I've personally hand-picked, tagged, and blogged most every outstanding video for you to watch.

How do I improve my own magic? I hear this question all the time.

Exposing you to high quality magic, from amazing magicians, only increases the chances of that happening. It also helps educate you about magic's rich past. In turn the art of magic advances, and ultimately, that's want I want!

Sifting through thousands of magic videos, choosing the purest performances and consolidating them in one location has been a hefty project and a lofty goal to be sure. Nonetheless, you are worth ALL of the effort.

Here's an opportunity to discover some of the greatest magicians filmed. Your magic education continues today. Visit the Magic Video Blog right now, and start learning from the legends of our industry.

I hope you love these vintage clips as much as I do.

Info on the convention?

Good question! The Convention area of the 52+ website is found here. However, we are going through a site transition, and it hasn't been updated with the 2014 convention info yet.

I don't want you walking away empty-handed so you can find info about the convention posted on the UC (Thank you Mike Ratledge!)

When the 52+ Joker site is updated, I'll let everyone know.

What's the deal with their packaging? I've seen the boxes you have in that photo, but all the ones I own came in a two-deck sleeve.

It also came as a single deck advertisement. I thought it was pretty common. No?

So, what's new on the agenda? What do you guys have planned? :)

Good man.. love your enthusiasm!

Have you watch the 30 min. interview with Tom & Judy (found in Tom's letter)? Just click the YouTube image, and it should take you to the video. It's even chapter'd in the description.

For those who missed it, and are reading about it for the first time, check out - Tom and Judy Dawson on Playing Cards.

Before the end of the year, Tom plans to put up some sweet images of stuff most people have only read about. However, the majority of new stuff comes in 2014.

Maybe you could help with the dissemination of all the info? PM me, and let's talk. That goes for anyone else interested. PM or email me (found in my profile).

maybe a competition for a free JNugg? ;) :p

You mean a contest where the winner receives 1 single card? We'd need to have 55 contests in order for someone to collect all 52 cards, 2 jokers, and the tuck. Maybe a bonus round for the ripped cello? ;) :p

On a serious note, I think there's already a 10,000,000 page view contest running (found here). I hear you win a singed Exquisite deck (very nice of the CARC). Has everyone entered yet?

Not to diminish the shout outs from all the forum members, but without sounding melodramatic, I'm honored that I've helped Asher in his quest for playing card knowledge…

The honor is all mine! Again, thank you for sharing with everyone. Hopefully others doing research will find these images useful.
