Brendan,

From the AoS and the KoC as well as the back pics on FB it looks like you've dialed-back the color gradients, at least compared to the first Hive deck. Is that solely an artistic decision, or does it have to do with production?

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Advice on buying from ebay

I bought from c571121 several times without any problems.
As far as I know he's a reputable seller in Taiwan.
The "Luxury" box thing is something that sellers sometimes do, put legit decks in a generic box to make it appear special somehow. Ignore it, it adds no value.
This is probably a better deal:

Playing Card Plethora / Re: LEGENDS PLAYING CARD COMPANY - Official Topic

Were any of you confused as to whether this was a deck of Bicycle branded cards?

Probably not. The big letters that say "LEGENDS" gave it aways, huh?

Maybe you thought that this might be another company's deck that USPCC printed, but so what?

One design element that is roughly the same is likely not infringing USPCC rights.

Hate to be "that guy", Rob - but shouldn't the Hive 2 deck have its own thread as they are separate from the first edition albeit part of the same series? ;)

I leave that up to Don. We've been kind of bunching series together.
What do you think Don. If it is a new KS project for a Deck in a series, make a new topic. If it is a restart of a failed project, combine with the old?
This is not a restart. The original deck sold-out. This is a new deck.

I abstain only out of a desire to be seen as impartial - I have too much behind-the-scenes access to the goings on.
So our votes are public?

They were made around the time USPC transitioned from Cincinnati to Erlanger.  Many decks of that period had issues.  Initially I though it was a shakedown period of the printing press, but I recently learned that it's something more.  The Federal Goverment passed regulations forcing playing card manufacturers to use all-recycled paper, vegetable-based inks and starch-based coatings.  OK, maybe not those combinations specifically, but they were forced to stop using 100% unrecycled stock, oil-based inks and plastic-based coatings and had to switch to something less toxic and more renewable.  They were forced to do some much-needed R&D work to find the right replacement supplies and still make a viable playing card.  I'm guessing that Magic Finish is one result of that R&D work.

So in general, custom decks from '09 and early '10 were the "lab rats" USPC used to try and make these supplies work while devising improvements.  Some noticed a loss in quality on Rider Backs - again, this is a possible culprit, and the fact that they were having trouble with the normal stock in use at the time (325 g/m2) on the new presses in Kentucky and stepped down to a slightly lighter stock (300 g/m2).  Sure there are differences, but I consider the current-issue Bicycles to be at least decent in quality - not godsawful, but not their finest work, either.

More to the point, the Blaine Tally-Ho decks were made, I think, during that changeover away from chemical inks and coatings.  Back then, you could get a pack to work well for you for a short while, but within a week or two of moderate use, the deck was shot because the cards had developed a much-higher friction co-efficient.  The starch coatings became tacky and glue-like, as starch does in foods when not cooked just right.
I think these predate that period of time, from http://playingcards.wikidot.com/split-spades:original:

These are the original David Blaine playing cards, first commissioned by David Blaine and released to the market in 2005. The cards have Tally Ho’s classic linoid finish and are used by David Blaine and other sleight of hand artists.

I haven't played with them enough to check.

Here's a pic from the wiki:

Yeah, $390 IS crazy, and probably not real.
The going price seems to be around $60 for Red's.
That's not too far-off what some hard-to-find year-old Kickstarter decks go for on eBay.

I got interested in his previous decks and bought a mixed brick of the original Tally-Ho split spades from somebody in France for $250.
Just got them delivered and they are pretty cool, interesting to see how the back design has evolved over what -- 8 years?
Not metallic, but that's OK.

I missed-out on the Red Gatorbacks, but did play some hold'em with family and friends last night with green and black decks. Nice cards to spread and deal. I won, but unfortunately we weren't playing for money, the prize was the decks themselves.

It would be cool if you did an Instagram giveaway too. I know they are the same company, but Facebook itself gives me the creeps, so I never login.

For those of you that I met at the 52+ con, probably noticed my GF has red hair. So I may be a little partial to red.
I really think this is a beautiful deck. This may be my favorite JR deck to date. I didn't get the tier I wanted, but I will own a few of these decks. So I'm happy.
Be careful Rob. I ended-up marrying my redheaded GF.

I got both gilded Aladdins and Ramblers. The corners are chopped at 45 degrees. Very visible clamp marks.
They are interesting, but more curiosities rather than something special.

@Don,

There are Ferengi out there, no doubt about it. However, Jackson's pricing for these decks may well alleviate the speculation trend. Unlike the original Fed 52 decks which resell for 2 to 5 times their KS price, these decks may well be priced high enough on KS that its Jackson who profits and not the Ferengi. Anyways, I hope so.

For those of you who belong to 52+Joker, I'll note that Jackson was selling Fed 52 decks for $10 a piece at this year's convention. I don't know if he'll have any Scarletts left after the KS, but join the club, come to next year's convention and maybe you'll get lucky.

Hey Don, I'm curious -- what do you consider a decent price, for a limited edition deck and for a gold deck?

/bama

It would largely depend on the production values and features brought to bear.  I can understand a deck being expensive, sure - it's the whole "elite" thing going on, such tiny quantities.  See, I'd probably not purchase a gilded deck - they're absolutely gorgeous, but they're not cheap, albeit worth every penny.
Ha! Spoken like a magician avoiding a trap! Not willing to get pinned down before the Scarlett Tallys launch?

Let me ask it another way, are you saying that you aren't in the market for expensive decks (even if they are worth every penny)? If so, at what price point does a deck cross the line from affordable to expensive?

Is The Hive considered to be crowdfunded? If not, I nominate it.
I second The Hive.

Sorry, friends - this deck was crowdfunded by Kings Wild Funding and is not eligible for this award.  We have a separate award for crowdfunded decks - it's eligible for that.
Nope, it wasn't. The only deck (so far) that's been KWFunded is the blue Tally-Hos. The Hive was offered for sale on the KWP web site.

I'll second Pagan and nominate the Independence Diptych.
Just to be clear, there are two sets of Indy diptychs: Paul Revere and Lady Independence and the swords of freedom.
I take it that you mean all four cards?
If so, I second!

I like to hunt and see if I can discover it on my own first. If I fail, I'll definitely be asking for the key.  ;)
I asked for the key, but as it turns out they fail the riffle test.
