I'm going to be the cool guy and go Ace of Spades.

The AoS I have in mind is the Bicycle Archangels one.

27
As a fellow Tally Ho fan, it would be hard to say no to these and display them proudly next to all of my other Tally Ho decks.

At this point you might as well come out with a "spectrum" Tally Ho deck, same as the Bicycle rider back version. I'd get that one too just for the spreads.

28
Well I guess I will be hitting walmart up later today. Cant resist buying them from a store.

Exactly, decks I wouldn't even consider getting online will be instant purchases in a store b/c A) its right there, B) its usually cheaper (especially in Walmart) and C) there are no shipping charges to bring the deck from the aisle to the counter.

Next time I'm near a Walmart I'll see if they're in stock.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: The Case for Congress
« on: March 15, 2014, 06:47:49 PM »
You know, I've wondered the same thing, why this brand of the US Playing Card Co. was in such low demand in comparison to other vintage decks. Since I am assuming you've handled some Congress decks, do they feel like they are inferior in stock or print quality in comparison to other standard USPCC brands? If they are similar, I may buy a couple for my own collection.

For an UNOPENED deck, I know you can look at the type of government tax stamp (pre 1965), type of USPCC sticker (whether it is stamp like, sticker like, blue or black) and whether a deck of Bicycle playing cards has a bar code on the bottom as a means of finding out when it was produced.

What about the little sliver of clear plastic that has the bicycle logo on it?

I've noticed on some newer decks, the sliver is clear (pictured on the right) and on some older decks (pictured on the left) the pull tab lining is milky white. Does anyone know how long they've used this style strip?

The reason I ask is I recently purchased some Bicycle decks (not pictured) that have the white strip instead of the clear strip but everything else is reminiscent of any normal recently produced Ohio made Bicycle deck. When the decks I purchased arrive, I'll open one and use the manufacturer code on the ace of spades to date it but in the mean time I thought I'd ask if anyone already used this detail to date bicycle decks.

Please excuse my terrible camera.

Wow, the highest I could ever get a card house was 4-5 stories and I thought I was cool...

I wonder if this was the guy I saw on the old Guinness World Records t.v. show that was on a bunch of years ago. Either way, I cannot image the amount of focus required to pull off stunts like that.

If I had to choose 10 decks to have in a 10 deck collection, they would be (in no order AND subject to change):

1.  Uusi - Bohemia - because i love the large hand painted pips and the simple yet complex single color courts.
2.  Seasons Set - because everyone loves a deck set, and why not this beautifully customized black/white limited set
3.  Federal 52 - Pick one. Personally, I like the color and design of the silver certificate. Beautifully intricate and just a glorious box to put on display.
4.  Tally Ho (ohio made) - I don't know if the Erlanger version is too different but I've been handling an Ohio tally for a LONG time now and it has yet to deteriorate in its fanning, dribbling, faro-ing, cuts, spreads...
5.  Split Spades (silver) - Box is great, card backs are great, handling is great, great.
6.  Ornates - original or kickstarter. Pick a color. Very eye catching backs and unique courts and general card design
7.  Aurum - different color, different back design, exquisite detail throughout
8.  Noc v2 - I am a fan of its simplicity
9.  Virtuoso decks - unique design and cool box + pleasing courts
10. Pr1me Playing Cards - not uspcc, beautiful thin borders, why not.

They were already sold out of the Fed 52's by the time I got there but they still had some Gold Certificates, thankfully. I think those are almost gone too.

Just very cool design and theme. Hits all the right spots in my book. Possibly backing.

35
please excuse me, but i'd buy the shit out of a deck that had that card in it.

So just an update on the original question. I'm going ahead and taking Don's (+ others') advice and getting a Seasons set, Pr1me playing cards, I found some luxurious gold Bee's, and when I get a chance some Lee Asher 605's. Also got a Bicycle Evolution and Creepy deck along the way even though no one recommended them in particular.

I really appreciate everyone's suggestions.

HolyJJ, I have all of those cards besides the Fournier 605's which is now on my to-buy list.
Mr. M I will look into the clipped wings deck since I am a fan of the EJ's Curator deck. I want to get a Fantastique, but I'll wait to buy it as a part of an ebay bundle or something. I'd rather not buy it by itself.

What else are you looking for in playing cards? What are some of the favorite in your collection and why? This way we can point you in the right direction.

My personal suggestion are White Knuckles. Read about them and why the designer designed them the way he did, great stuff!

I'll look into the white knuckles. Mostly I look for a back design that looks good in fans (even if I don't open the deck, i'd like to know it's there). If the back design is good enough, it can make up for a lack of customization elsewhere in the deck.

Some of my favorite designs are:

New Fan Backs
Doomsday Deck
Split Spades
Noc v2's
Anything Uusi

Among the better decks out there, if not the best:

The Seasons collection (Primavera and Seronda in both Gold and Platinum editions)
Any deck made by Uusi
Bicycle Clot Ltd. Edition
Bicycle Bearbrick (often found alone, but also available in a boxed set with custom dice)
Federal 52 and all its offspring
Anything by Paul Carpenter
Anything by Randy Butterfield
Anything by the Expert Playing Card Company - though some dislike the Global Titan deck.
Anything by Zenneth Kok or sold in his shop
Pr1me Playing Cards
Anything from the Legends Playing Card Company
Anything by Misdirection's Mystery
The Ren Deck (a.k.a. the Shinobi deck)
I never got my hands on Takefu but it's beautiful
The Puppet and Kite set
Most if not all of the Club 808 decks - if you aren't a member, you should be: bicyclecards.com/808
The original and v2 Mechanic Decks (the original was produced/sold by HOPC, v2 is not and is on sale now)
David Blaine: Split Spades Bee, Split Spades Lions, White Lions.  The Tally Ho Split Spades aren't aging well and are pretty costly.  He also has a forthcoming deck called Gatorbacks.
Aladdins
Arrco Tahoe reprints (the originals are vintage)
Decks from card-shark.de, especially those made by USPC.  They have plenty of magician's gaffs as well as decks like marked, stripper, etc. and a really wild concept that's great for magic called the Double Decker - two decks of cards half as thick as standard pasteboards that fit in a single poker-sized box.  The mind can run wild with the potential for magic tricks you can do with it.

Do you need more, or is this enough to break your bank for today?  :))

Wow, thanks. I'll look or re-look into all of them.

And as for the other post, I'm a modern collector, but definitely open to vintage cards. In reality I need more advice on vintage cards than I do modern.

Playing Card Plethora / Please Recommend a Deck
« on: March 03, 2014, 01:10:04 AM »
Hello everyone. It seems I've reached a point where I have every deck that I really want (barring unreleased kickstarter pledges).

My collection isn't huge, so there's a good chance I'm missing some good decks out there, ones I haven't been paying attention to. I'm hoping someone can recommend a new deck to add to my collection. It doesn't have to be the "best" deck ever, just a different, unique addition. As long as it's not a standard ellusionist, conjuring arts, dan dave or theory11 release, there's a good chance I don't have it. If you can give a short reason why, that would be great.

Thanks in advance

I certainly like the style so far. Can't wait to see a back design or a queen.

43
At first I didn't like it b/c the back design seemed too washed out, but upon further inspection the back design has grown on me. I, too, love the chosen font, but I also agree the box could use some improvement. A worthy addition to one's card collection.

44
Hey I wanted to let everyone know that there are 24 hours left in my ebay auction for the gold smoke and mirrors. Take a look if you are interested in bidding or if you are interested in seeing where it will end.

I will bump this up one last time when there is 1 hour left.

45
Just beautiful designs, as always, on the limited edition decks. Too bad I can't afford them at the moment with pledges I have for the Ornates and Grotesque, among others. Knowing me I'll change my mind when there are only a handful of limited edition deck slots left. I can't not have a set, right?

Well, that didn't last long. I just pledged for the limited editions.

46
I love the Ace of Spades, I like the box art, the back design is meh, and I do not like the courts that much.

I like the tweaks so far. And you know what, as you mentioned a super thin border around the back design would look even better. That is, unless you want to preserve the casino type feel the cards currently have.

49
Really cool designs, wish there were more colors to choose from.
