I got my deck in the mail today. You can check out a few pics and brief thoughts here: http://xmetal.me/design-art-in-cards

Wow. My mild annoyance at the major inaccuracy of their timer mechanism (which I had tweeted them about immediately and they said, more or less "oh well") is now full on major disappointment. I was so prepared for it that I have no doubt I would have been getting one of those if not for their timer not working. I had that page up hours in advance, kept it up and visible and didn't even have a chance to click the button (went straight from 0 to Sold Out) Damn, that really bums me out.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Using good decks for their intended purpose

I understand having a collection of things that you like, but what is less clear to me in relation to cards is that if you collect cards and keep them sealed forever, you have missed out on the vast majority of the "art" in the product. At minimum, you have the box and 52 cards (usually 54+) so if you never open that box, you are getting to enjoy less than 2% of what you paid for, which seems a shame.

If you intend to keep and resell, it certainly makes sense to keep it pristine, but if you buy and intend to keep, having it sealed forever would seem to rob you of the most of the tangible enjoyment.

Ultimately, of course, people spend their own money and are free to do whatever makes them happy. :)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: How should I store my cards?
« on: November 02, 2011, 08:28:11 PM »
Bringing this topic back with a question. I've heard that for cards you are going to use, it's very important to store them flat, instead of up on end. True? I live in Florida, pretty humid and can definitely tell the difference on the muggy days with how the cards handle but wasn't sure if I could keep them up on end like books. (cuz I'm a visual guy and they just look better that way :)

I decided to pick up one of these from pokerstud. Maybe a couple bucks more than they should be, but I thought they looked sweet, with some different touches. Looking forward to getting those. Got quite a few decks in transit right now which is always fun...

where do you buy the seasons deck

At the moment you don't buy them anywhere. Eventually they will be released, I believe via some of the big resellers on eBay. Only 2500 sets will be produced.

I was looking through some of mine, and noticed on the Bicycle Gargoyles there is a small difference right above the gargoyle head, and on the Arcane the top of the ribbon thing tends to move around a little.

I'm undecided on these. I like black cards a lot but these seem to be missing "something" I can't pinpoint. Have to see some pictures and more details.

Color variations really don't do anything for me. I just  got some blue and simply changing the back doesn't compel me to want to get those. With so many other totally new decks available I think I'll pass on the green artifice (tho artifice cards are some of my favorites and handle so nicely)

I learned my lesson from getting screwed out of the Monarchs this morning (due to their inconsistent timers) so I got right on it with these and got my deck ordered promptly. Threw in an Aristocrats into my order (which I've been meaning to get anyways) to make the ouch-level shipping slightly more palatable. $7, really guys? Oh well, gotta pay to play.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Theory 11 Monarchs pre-sale - Limited to 111
« on: October 31, 2011, 12:09:11 PM »
Its not worth making a fuss over, but I was excited to give it a shot, made sure I was ready and all that. If I didn't even get the chance to see the button, that means my local timer was off by at least 90 seconds (what they said it sold out in). So that was poopy programming.

I'd sure catch hell if one of my web sites interactive features was off by that much. :)

Ah well, hopefully their servers won't die on 11/11/11.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Typical to have so many new deck coming out?
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:59:30 AM »
Wow, that's quite a list! I hadn't heard of a lot of those, but as has been mentioned, being picky is the way to go. I only buy decks that appeal to me enough that I'll use them, and only buy 1 anyways. I'm not interested in reselling or making money, but even with being real picky it seems that there are a huge number of nice looking decks all hitting at once.

Thanks for that list tho, I'll have to poke through it and see if anything appealing comes up. Maybe something like that could be part of the forum as a sticky, so new folks can get an idea of what is out there as time goes on.

Boo. I call foul play on their timer mechanism. I suspect that their was a minor inconsistency across browsers or via the calculation from when you loaded the page. I purposefully had that page up for several hours, and watched it count down. It went from 0 directly to the Sold Out button appearing. Didn't even see the add to cart, even for a split second. I was ready to click the instant my timer ran down. In theory (get it, in THEORY?) that button should have at minimum appeared for all users at the same time, even if you only had a moment to click it.

It's not like I'm going to sue or anything, and I'll just buy a deck in a couple weeks, but as a professional web developer I'm kind of disappointed that their mechanism obviously did not work perfectly consistently for all viewers.

Playing Card Plethora / Typical to have so many new deck coming out?
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:56:23 PM »
Hi all.  I am pretty new to all this business of getting cool decks, but in the last month that I've been paying attention it seems like there is a huge number of decks coming out all at the same time. I was wondering if, historically, there has always been this volume of cool and interesting decks all coming out constantly or if this span of time is out of the ordinary.

I'm somewhat picky, so even with tossing a lot of stuff out, just in these last few months of the year we have Vortex, monarchs, fantastique, mana, seasons, samurai, Templar, etc all hitting at once.

So either I got into this right at the correct time and it will taper off, or I'm going to be spending a lot more money than I thought and explaining all these packages to my wife. :)

This is a deck I'm really looking forward to. Love the cardist angle of the joker, and the back is so pretty and elegant. Hope it releases in December like he says to I can add it to the collection.

So on twitter, Daniel Madison said "Without a doubt the most impressive deck I've ever seen. Absolute Madness."

Interesting. Looking forward to seeing these. Might try a little harder to get in that presale.

The box, with what appear to be gold accents look quite detailed and classy. I'm definitely going to aim for a deck of these at some point.

This deck design is pretty enough that for me, I don't care where or how they decide to sell it. I just want a set, at any halfway reasonable cost really. Sure hope they become available soon!

Quite brilliant marketing, a great way to get a lot of people's emails and addresses. Smart enough that even knowing the point I still sent in my info.  ;)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Favorite Deck?
« on: October 23, 2011, 03:41:51 PM »
My top three right now would be the Artifice, Arcane and Sentinels, but I give the nod to the Sentinels because of their fully custom and more modern look. I just really connect with that, but love the detail of the others I mentioned too.

This list will undoubtedly change every few months though, there looks to be some awesome decks coming out real soon.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: New Deck - Samurai Deck

I think that deck looks pretty cool, being a fan of ancient Japanese culture I'm general. But, it's still probably 6th on my priority list behind the more custom stuff like Vortex, Seasons and Mana. Maybe I'll grab those samurai off eBay someday.

I'm hoping this deck comes out cool, their stuff is not always my favorite but is great on the whole (love my Deck One and Sentinels). I also have to give them thanks that their reach is far enough that they got a blurb in a design related blog, which made me realize this kind of stuff existed after about 20 years of not paying attention to cards. So, I owe Theory11 some props for getting me back in the game. :)

The Deck One and Sentinels are awesome, IMO. I didn't even realize the whole world of really cool decks existed until I saw a link to Theory 11 a few months back. I'm still learning so I may not pick up on the subtle differences between decks, but the Sentinels in particular are sweet for their design alone. I love seeing actual custom design work and not just a recoloring or minor change in suit cards.

That said, looking at my pile of decks it looks like Ellusionist wins out over T11 for me at the moment when it comes to the "bigger" companies making decks.

Introduce Yourself / Re: POLL: What's your age?
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:24:23 AM »
I've noticed that most of the card related fields are dominated by the younger folks. I guess that when I was kid I had a lot more time to devote to stuff like learning tricks and cardistry (though of course, way back then there was no cardistry as we know it today). Just wish I'd followed up on my interest then.

When you are married, have two kids, full time job and freelance on the side it gets a lot harder to sit there for hours figuring out how to do a Sybil. :)
