Design & Development / Your chance to be a Discourse Moderator
« on: November 29, 2011, 03:52:50 AM »
Have you been posting on here in hopes of making it to our list of staff? Want to join the ranks of CBJ, Curt, Victoria and I?

Look no further than this thread. We are looking for a moderator of the Design & Development board. Here is what we need:

 • Someone who knows the field. Not necessarily an expert in all design mediums, but someone who has at least dabbled in the arts and has at least one field of art that they are great at.
 • Someone who is willing to keep the board active by posting new and interesting content on a daily basis.
 • Someone who has a keen eye for good art, and is able to provide constructive comments as needed.
 • Someone who is at least 14 years of age.
 • Someone who is interested in working up the ranks of AetherCards over a long period of time, if necessary.

If these apply to you, then over the next week or two, show us what you've got. We will be picking one lucky person to take over this board, and we will pick based on who has shown us the most potential to be an excellent staff member.

Your current post count is insignificant to us. The only thing that we look at are the points listed above.

Thank you, and good luck!

Design & Development / *POLL* Where does your experience lie?
« on: November 29, 2011, 03:42:48 AM »
So where do your strengths belong?

Please elaborate your responses below.

This board is more than just a haven for those of us who are obsessed with the world of art. Some of you may have never even opened Photoshop. Here are a few reasons why that does not matter:

1. Not everything here is related to drawing or Photoshop. We welcome all production in this board, including video and even literature.

2. Even if you're not into ANY of that stuff (a few of you live under rocks, apparently), it's never too late to start. Feel free to post questions, or request help. Those of us that are experienced in the field will do our best to assist you.

So whip out whatever tools you have that you can use to create...anything... and show us what you're capable of!

Design & Development / Advertising: Yes or no?
« on: November 29, 2011, 03:31:21 AM »
Advertising comes in many forms. Some of it is blatant: "Check out my YouTube channel & subscribe!" Other kinds are more subtle.

We allow subtle advertising here, but there is a catch. We want you to showcase your work, no matter what it is. In return, this forum offers insightful critique to help you make something even better. When you make a thread linking to something offsite (that is, it's not hosted by AetherCards), make sure you point out what it took you to make the stuff in question, how you made it, what you're looking to improve, etc.

Don't take offense to constructive criticism. The only helpful feedback a person could ever get, is feedback that can help the person improve. Everything else is insignificant.

AetherCards staff reserve the right to move your topic to the Lolaq spam board if it is deemed blatant advertisement and doesn't give off the genuine feeling of you looking to improve what you've made.

Playing Card Plethora / Non-USPCC decks
« on: November 26, 2011, 09:58:41 PM »
Do you guys own any non-USPCC decks? Let's ignore the horrible trash like Cardinal's and skip straight to the premium brands from other countries.

I own some Fournier decks and they are superb for cuts (I know they are a USPCC subsidiary but they're manufactured in Spain - so it's all good.) I also have some Anglos which are absolutely wonderful decks.

The weirdest cards I have are the Archduke Eagle Backs. Their finish is absolutely mind-boggling and the cards are probably 1.3x thicker than a typical Bike deck.

So today I dropped a load of money on D&D's latest deck (kind of, I got a brick).

I also dropped close to $1,000 on Ellusionist. I love that company, and seeing as how they are the reason I stumbled into this community in the first place I don't mind the purchase. However, I have nowhere to even store the items I got.

When my orders arrive, I will be selling Infinity decks at a heavily reduced cost, as well as reduced cost Pure Smokes which I know a lot of you have been holding off on because of the price tag. This will be your chance to get it for much less.

What's in it for me? Making some of the money back for my own purchases of Infinity decks and Pure Smoke itself, as well as receiving some LTD decks and Black Ghosts 1st Editions.

This isn't my last purchase. With any luck, I'll be buying a ton of T11 stuff tomorrow to stock up on White Centurions. I don't care about those guys very much, and will be reselling 100% of what I buy for somewhere along the lines of half price of what they sell their stuff for.

I wanted to get some Black Crowns for you guys as well to sell at a reduced cost but that didn't end up going to well!

So here is what will be up for sale in my personal "store" in the T/S/ISO board within a week or two:

Fulton decks
Infinity decks
Pure Smokes
D&D IAOCP books
(hopefully) Random T11 products (probably Monarchs & Sentinels)
+ Bonus decks & Vortex swag with every purchase.

This is one of those things that I like to call a triple-win. The big companies get their profit, I get my collection looking good, and you guys get awesome discounts that simply don't exist anywhere else, and never will again.

So save some of your money if you are still in need of the items listed above.  :)

Hey guys, I have been contemplating how to implement Black Friday savings for a Kickstarter and the solution is actually quite simple. A tiered reward system. When a certain amount of money is pledged, you get certain items.

One thing I don't want to be is a start up company that can't give some stuff away for the holidays. We are not quite meeting the goals I had wanted to in order to give everyone free decks, but I think this extra pick-me-up is something you pledges will enjoy.

Here is how it works: Make your pledge by this coming Monday 11:59 AM EST (right before it becomes Tuesday) and you get free stuff if you've pledged enough! If you've already pledged, feel free to upgrade or just sit back and enjoy free stuff.

Pledges of  $50 or more get one free deck.
Pledges of $100 or more get two free decks.
Pledges of $250 or more get three free decks.
Pledges of $500 or more get five free decks.

Your free stuff will be automatically added to your shipment when we ship out the decks. Of course if we reach our other reward thresholds those will be included as well. That's a lot of free decks. You can use them, display them, sell them, eat them - whatever you want to do with them is okay with me. My advice? Use your extra decks to make awesome gifts for (literally) anyone. Talk about a unique birthday present!

This is an announcement that will only be view-able by people that browse the Discourse as an additional way of saying thank you for contributing in making this absolutely awesome community exist.

I hope you'e all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Have a safe Black Friday!

Clicking here will take you to our Facebook page where the latest Fan of the Week winners won quite the prize, one of which is a chance to see our next deck a very long time before anyone else even knows its name. They get to see the preview next week.

However, if you guys are interested, the next three Fan of the Week winners will also receive this as their prize.

To win, the easiest way is to do the following:

- Pledge for the Vortex. Obviously this is the biggest way you can support AetherCards as a startup company. I'm pretty sure all of you here have already done that though, so let's move on.

- Post on our Facebook news stories! Stimulate discussion.

- Tag yourself in our Facebook pictures.

- Create YouTube videos about the Vortex Kickstarter and/or The Discourse forums.

- Post on these forums! The more quality posts you make, the more chances you have of winning.

- Spread the word about Aether & the Vortex deck!

Because of how difficult it has been to match Discourse usernames to Facebook profiles, you must now post why you deserve to win the competition on our Facebook sometime during the week (at the end of it is probably the best idea). Fan of the Week is (typically) announced every Saturday night. Posting why you should win (don't be afraid to get detailed) will at the very least make you eligible to win. This dramatically increases the chances of everyone who wants to participate.

As far as the next deck goes, I am perfectly aware we are still fundraising for the Vortex. I am philosophically against how some companies launch a new deck every month. My next deck's Kickstarter won't start until at least Q1 2012, which is months away. Of course that is followed by the fundraising period, printing, and shipping. The next deck is something that I won't settle for anything short of perfection (in my eyes) with. I've learned a lot from the Vortex and continue to learn more every day.

* The next deck is not Vortex v2 which some people have seen a preview of by posting on The Discourse often. It's a different series.

Design & Development / Create-A-Deck Thread - what will you come up with?
« on: November 19, 2011, 11:49:20 PM »
This should be real fun considering how many creative people are on here. Here is how this works. Fill out the form below (copy + paste it into your post) as best you can. You can create as many decks as you'd like to any extent that you want to. When our Des+Dev board rolls around I'll move this thread there. Hopefully this will give you guys a little bit of insight into how a real deck of cards is created. Here is the best part: If I like any of your ideas enough, I will bring them to life! I'll create a strong visual concept to match what you write. Anyone that wants to join in on the fun and design an idea they adore is more than welcome to as well. Let's see how big we can make this thread!

Code: [Select]
REPLACE THIS TEXT WITH THE NAME OF YOUR DECK

Theme:

Extent of customization:

Pick two distinct, innovative features your cards will include, sell us on the ideas. Replace this text with those two ideas.

Choose your color scheme. What will be the primary colors you use? Where will you use each color?

The storyline of the deck:

REPLACE THIS TEXT WITH ANY VISUAL CONCEPTS YOU MAKE.

REPLACE THIS TEXT WITH ANY AND ALL ADDITIONAL INFO YOU WANT TO PROVIDE.

Here is an example of what your idea may look like. Keep in mind the following is very simple and yours may or may not be more complex:

Honey-Bee Playing Cards

Theme: Buzzing Bees throughout! Buzzing Bees throughout!

Extent of customization: Custom backs, custom Jokers, custom Ace of Spades, recolored court cards

These cards will include a SymmetryPip layout as well as a unique, foil deck seal.

The colors used are gold, black and white.

The story line of the deck: n/a

The Honey-Bee's are a deck of cards that utilize the wonderful repeat back design we all have become fond of when it comes to a Bee deck. However, the deck would come in both a bordered and unbordered versions. The back design would be a honey-comb pattern that uses shades of gold and black for depth. The design would give the illusion of three dimensions due to the shading. The Ace of Spades would be a modified, standard Bee ace of Spades in full color with added shading and depth, as well as a few unique optical illusions to add to the intrigue of the cards. The Jokers are custom-drawn bumble bees swarming together around a nest. One Joker would have a random swarm while the other Joker would have the Bee's swarm into a subtle reveal you have to squint to see.

Now let's see what you can come up with. It can be as silly or as serious as you like - all ideas are welcome.  :)

The Conversation Parlor / Plans for Thanksgiving?
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:29:35 PM »
It's around the corner and everyone celebrates it differently. What are you guys going to do for the holiday, and what is your absolute favorite part of it?

Victoria and I are either staying in or going out with some friends to a restaurant. Our family is all over the country and we don't have the luxury of being able to fly anywhere this year. However, my favorite part aside from the free pass to eat like a glutton are all the crazy sales. I love new things, and holiday shopping is an excellent excuse to get them!

Design & Development / Coming Soon: Design & Development Board
« on: November 16, 2011, 02:43:46 AM »
Below is a long list of interesting questions. How do you know if you'll adore posting in the upcoming Design & Dev board? Answer: If you don't know the answer to at least one of the below questions OR you know the answers to questions below that you want to discuss or teach to others.
Quote

Ever wanted to know how the designs on a deck of cards are made? What in the world is the difference between RGB and CMYK? Photoshop or Illustrator?

What is Cinema4D?

What is DeviantArt?

How do I start learning to create digital art in the first place?  Do I need to know how to hand draw anything? Is hand drawing all I need to know?

How do I create a website for my projects? What is UBBC, HTML, CSS & Javascript? Colors are blue, red, green and ... wait how do I describe this bluish-green with a tinge of red in it?! There are color FORMULAS?!

How do you animate an emoticon? Heck, how do you animate an image, period? What is the difference between .gif, .bmp, .jpg and .png? What is FTP?

How do I learn which colors look good together, and which colors just look awful or amateur?

Is there any way I can get an inside scoop on how the card developers go about making what it is that they make?

Below are the answers:

 • Of course you did
 • One is combining light for digital art, the other is combining inks for print art
 • Neither...or both...or just one, doesn't really matter
 • A 3D imaging software
 • A place to show off your work
 • Learn via tutorials
 • Hand drawing skills will help you immensely
 • Hand-drawing skills are very far from all the skills you will need
 • By spending months and years learning programming and design!
 • These are all programming languages, one of which you use every day at the Discourse (UBBC)
 • Colors are often referred to by their Hexadecimal formulas
 • Oh yeah, there are color formulas, and they're extremely fun to learn
 • Emoticons can easily be animated via Photoshop by creating each frame of the animation and splicing them together
 • Images can be animated through a slew of programs. Some of the most common animations on the web are made via Flash or Photoshop
 • .gif = Good for animations and pixel art, nothing else .bmp = obsolete .jpg = somewhat obsolete, useful for photos to reduce file sizes and .png = the GOD of formats capable of transparency like an oiled Greek goddess is capable of pleasuring Zeus
 • A method of file transfer from your computer to the web
 • You study color theory!
 • By being a part of the Discourse's Design & Development board!

So stay tuned in the coming days as the board is brought to fruition. Here's where you can help! Vote in the poll above, and tell us how you will contribute and what you want others to contribute as well. Tell us what you want from the board so we can cater an experience you will adore.

The Conversation Parlor / A bit of a hiatus
« on: November 12, 2011, 04:40:18 PM »
Hey guys, I've run into some medical problems and I may not be online as often for the next few days. I'll try to keep you all updated on things, but don't expect too much.

This goes for Facebook & Kickstarter as well, since I won't be able to answer questions as easily and the like. I'll still try my best to answer questions as they come in via email.

Fan of the Week will be announced tomorrow if all things go well, but it may be delayed a bit but as always I'll upgrade the prize to compensate for the lateness.

I would appreciate it if you guys answered any questions on Facebook or Kickstarter that you may see if you know what the answer is.

Everything in terms of the Vortex deck is still on schedule, so no need to worry about that. Direct any questions you may have to Victoria if they are Aether related, or Curt if they are Discourse related. :)

197
Hey guys, I'm unloading off my collection and right now I am selling some Lions decks from David Blaine.

Buy one deck: $13
Buy three decks: $11
Buy all five decks: $10

Shipping in the United States is $6, and international is $15. All shipping comes with tracking numbers, packed well, and you will get an opened, barely ever used, Lions deck as an added bonus if you buy all five so you can keep the rest sealed.  :)

Playing Card Plethora / Please keep similar topics in one thread.
« on: November 10, 2011, 05:41:59 PM »
There is no need for five different topics on the Actuators or Monarchs for example. Similar topics will be merged, and as a result your thread will look non-sequitur to previous posts.

That is all.  :)
