Haha thanks for the compliments about Italians Don! The box manufacturer was indeed Italian, but they produced boxes for the USPCC and sometimes Arrco, not for the Italian card companies. They seem soiled and the fact that they are bridge sized makes them go down for the price. I think that if they were in better conditions they could have been easily sold in combo with the beautiful box,

Playing Card Plethora / Did the USPCC go back to Cincinnati?
« on: April 07, 2012, 03:18:41 AM »
I was randomly watching some videos of Jason England and I stumbled across this video on the Theory11 channel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkhH6KdbLI4&feature=relmfu

Go at 8:00 and watch where is J. Bayme and listen at what he says... Did you hear that! "The USPCC in Cincinnati,Ohio". Does this mean they are moving back? I hope so! Anyway they just moved 30 minutes from Cincinnati, but the quality dropped down a lot, but now it's better, even the Tally Ho are very good. Any information?

So, the box has the date on it, and that's the Ace of Spades used in that period, so the date must be correct. I will take some pictures of the box and post it soon.

Zero, I am actually referring to this deck right here it was made on that date, I found the date on the box, and this deck was one of the first runs made that day (It has the Indicator Ace of Spades, which was the standard Dougherty Ace of Spade of the time, before they produced a custom one) In fact I spotted a deck few months ago with the same box, but with a different Ace of Spades (Tally Ho), and in fact it was produced in 1899. Today I will start the topic.

Tally Ho were introduced in the late 1800s, so this deck should precede them. What do you think about them Digi,Zero and Nathan? And what about the idea for the new topic?

Here it is!
The Ace of Spades, The Box, a Court Card and the Back Design all in one photo:

Ace of Spades:

Some history about this deck, it was produced in NY by Andrew Dougherty in 1885, on the 27th of October to be exact, since it was their first run of decks with the "Improved Card Box". A little known fact, there was a back design of Tally Ho with this same back design, I have one complete deck, box and jokers too, it is the same back, just in Green. This deck is one-way, I am almost 100% positive that this deck was used by a cheat, since it has some line work, typical of that era (pre Sharps and Flats type), in fact each spread of important cards has some line work and shade work on some leaves. The marks are tiny, but very clear if you are used to marked cards. I might open a new topic showing my collection of crooked gambling cards, if you want so, please comment down about it.

I don't have any Aladdin 1001 decks to try, but I got a back from Google images and messed around in facebook to try and see if I could notice the difference. At best, it seems like the borders are slightly different. I can't really explain it, but I've marked where I mean in red on the attachment.

This might just be from the photo/scan of the picture I used, though! :o
Nope. Try again. Try looking at the corners :)

Exactly. Strange Don, my search didn't lead to any other page, I'm sorry.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: What else do you collect?
« on: March 11, 2012, 04:01:19 PM »
so far I only collect cards. If I somehow came into a lot of money, i'd probably start collecting watches and liquor bottles. I don't drink but the bottles they come in are really nice sometimes.

Heck, you could probably get empty bottles for free if you establish connections to the bartenders at your local drinking establishments.  They only toss them out or recycle them anyway, depending on local laws.

Other than playing cards, my main interest has been collecting cheating devices. Anything that goes from cards to dice and various furniture, if you know what I mean. If someone wants to sell something, please contact me.

You should hit the Vintage Collection topic and post photos - or create a new topic.  It would be very cool to see some vintage and modern cheating devices.  I've been itching to get a gambler's holdout myself, large and strong enough to handle an entire deck, but I just haven't come by one yet that didn't cost a fortune.

I will post photos of decks, no cheating devices, I cannot expose them, since here it's a public forum. I will expose however the gaffs in the cards, so it's still a good deal. You mean a cooler holdout, they are called "pots" or "frying pans", they are pretty common, but used only by few people, since deck switching is very difficult. They cannot be classified as normal holdouts though. Oh, expect spending a lot of money, people who sell them on ebay like any other crooked gambling device want a lot of money, since for a cheat 500 dollars or more are "few" dollars, since he wins more than that in a game.

As the title says, how many of you found that feature they have? A hint, the position is perfect for reading it while dealing.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Cheating in a casino
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:53:59 AM »
True, but if they have no evidence at all, they can just suspect, and that is not sufficient to blacklist you if that's the first time. Cheaters are a very important part of us magicians, we shall not forget that.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Re: Favorite Magic trick to perform?
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:21:25 AM »
That's a tough question! I will go with "Triumph" done with the original tecnique of Dai Vernon. If presented right, it's just so magical. By the way, the original tecnique will fry magicians too!  And for fooling magicians that would be and effect I came up with that has no name, it's basically cutting the aces from a shuffled deck, yes it's impromptu.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Cheating in a casino
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:04:35 AM »
Now this is an interesting topic. You need to know that cheating the casinos is possible. Have you ever heard of Dr.X or Mr.Z? (I cannot say their names for obvious reasons) Dr.X is believed to be the best dice shooter in the world, even better than Wolfe. He has cheated in the GN and JN casinos, they knew he was cheating of course, but there was no evidence, they cannot send you to jail if they have no evidence. Mr.Z is on the same level of Steve Forte, both of them learnt directly from him. Mr.Z is an excellent card and dice guy he was in casino stuff but then he moved to private games, that's where you get the money. Anyway, casinos have been cheated for almost 50 years now, but it takes a lot of skill to be able to leave them with no evidence. The best tactic is hit and run. Strike once and get as much as you can and then move away. Private games are safer and it's easier to cheat.

That's true, but since it snowed for almost a month in a row here, I could access internet sparingly, and to be fair I like the forum anyway. And I really enjoy talking to other magicians and/or collectors, why should I lie about that?
