What is the most rare or most expensive deck of card in your collection??
I thought it would be interesting to see some of the gems that people have in their collection. For me it would either be either the Gold Monarchs or my Smoke and Mirrors series. I know we have some longtime collectors and some brand new collectors, so I'm sure there is a great deal of variety in our decks.
And one final question... If you could add any ONE deck to your collection what deck would it be??
-
Mine are LTD, Gold Arcane, and Red Artifice.
And if I could add any deck, I would add Jerry's Nuggets
-
Rarest: 12 Red Artifice, 15 Black Crown, 2 LTD
If I could add any deck: Jerry's Nuggets, Red White Lions, Gold Arcane, and Black Ghost 1st Edition.
-
probably my 2 v6's and 1 v5
if i could add any deck either v1s or jerry's
-
2 LTD's
Jerry's or Black ghost 1st ed
-
I think if I could add any deck to my collection it would be either jerry's or the purple (between prints) white lions!
I'm pretty curious as to what CBJ, Curt, and Alex's answers are to this...
-
Rarest Now: LTD's/Black Crowns
Rarest Ever: Gold Arcane
Whishing to Add: Jerry Nuggets/Smoke & Mirror v1/ Black Ghost 1st Ed.
-
Right now Im pretty proud of my 23 decks of Smoke & Mirror V1's. Bought 2 bricks of each the first night they were released and have only opened up 1 deck. Also pretty pumped about my 3 decks of White Centurions.
The one deck I would love to have at the moment would be the Black Ghost First Edition. Which just so happens to be on its way cause I just made a big order from E : )
These are just a couple of my rare decks. I have many more to list but didnt wanna stray to far from listing just a one or two of them.

Wow! Those are some sweet decks! I'm sure everybody would love to hear some of the other rare decks you have haha I wish I had a few more of the S&M V1s
-
Jerry's are my most expensive decks.
If I could, I would add White Centurions and a set of Cage Gardens.
-
Oh yeah, I would love to have a deck of the Gold Monarchs. Dont see that happening though.
-

maybe we could work something out..... I have a gold monarch I would be willing to part with, and I am really wanting a set of D&D v1's, PM me if you are interested, maybe we can come to an agreement.
Anyway.
My rarer decks are: Gold Monarchs & 3 Red Artifice
and as my signature says, I would love a set of v1's, or a set of Cage Gardens
-
Most expensive? I have a deck partially made from 24k gold...
I'd like to add at least 1 brown wynns and I really liked the Gallaher's cigarette playing cards but an incomplete set on eBay is almost £1000 (family history with the company but not a grand's worth of sentimental value).
-
Jerry's are my most expensive decks.
If I could, I would add White Centurions and a set of Cage Gardens.
the cage gardens from what i have seen have terrible handling

I've heard the same, but it's more for collection purpose then for use for him.
-
Rarest decks I have:
Black Ghost 1st Edition
Red Artifice
Gold Arcane
an opened deck of Broken Spell - I NEVER see these up for sale, they're that freakin' rare.
an opened Brown Wynn's
Black New Fan Back
Vision
Black and White Pirate
some USPC sample decks of traditionally-cut Bee Diamond Backs, no casino imprint
There's probably more but that's all I can recall off the top of my head
Most expensive deck, in term of what I paid:
"Get Sharkey" red Phoenix deck - it's an awesome high-impact trick
On my want list:
Moth/Myth
Watcher
White Centurions
White New Fan Back
those extra decks that came with Blaine's White Lions AIP
an extra Brown Wynn's
an extra Broken Spell (sh'yeah, like that'll happen...)
Luck of the Draw (probably more rare than Broken Spell! Only about 500 exist.)
A sealed pack of the first Rider Back decks - hey, a guy can dream...
If anyone's got spares of the want list decks, I'll trade Gold Arcanes, a BG1E, Red Artifice, White Arrcos, and when I have some, Black Crowns and Fulton's. I generally try to get decks in pairs - a player and a keeper.
-
My rarest decks will be : 2 set of Cage Gardens, a blue jerry, 3 gold arcane, 8 ra, One 1st ed black ghost, One red golden nugget, One white centurion, One v1 set, One moth myth, 3 watcher plus one uncut, One new fan back set, One magic con, 3 IAOCP, One gargoyle expo, 2 brown wynns.
Deck I really wants are: All other colors of Golden Nugget, vintage silver nugget, vintage dunes, vintage carson city nugget, and maybe a gold monach (but I guess that wont happen).
-
Black Ghost 1st Ed. (2)LTD. Gold Arcane In Lucite Case
I would add White Centurions or Jerry's
-
i have 2 Red & Blue sets of Jerry's Nugget's which are still in very good condition. and 1 super used incomplete deck of Jerry's. 1 Friars Club Deck. and one Red Golden Nugget deck on it's way. all of which i was able to get way under current market value. 1 Brown Wynn, 1 Magic Con, a mixed brick of Smoke & Mirrors V3, 1 Smoke & Mirror V2 set. a brick of arrcos blue seals, 2 mixed bricks of watermelon, 10 v5, brick of v6, 3 v4, 2 vodka.
i know that it says most rare, and expensive deck, but in truth, these are all rare and expensive decks.
i would add v1, more jerry's,
-
I'm jealous ): only got two red artifice. gonna have a ltd flying in soon.. Got a few decks which I love such as D&D S&Ms, gonna get my red one soon, got the blue one and love it! also, fulton's joint clip is amazing, fell in love with the tuck box too haha, wish I had the money to get more decks...
-
Black Ghost 1st edition (Which I can't seem to find but I know I have it somewhere.... I bought it years ago and hid it away :-[ ) Also a brick of Black Crowns which I sold most of now.
If I could add any deck: Jerry's Nuggets, Gold Arcane, Red Artifice, and LTD.
-

You lost your Black Ghost V1? ??? ? NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Yeah, It's definitely one of those face palm moments. Years ago when I was into cards, I bought one, and it's in a case somewhere with a couple first edition black tigers, white ghost etc. Now I have no idea where they are :-[
-
I would have to say the rarest deck in my collection is the gold Monarch.
I also have
1-LTD
2-Black Ghost 1st Edition
1-White Centurion
2-Gold Arcane
CBJ
-
Umm,
Gold Arcane
Red Artifice
Black Crown
Vision
Myth\Moth
New Black Fan
Enigma
Samurai
There are others but where do you draw the line at what is perceived as a rare or valuable deck?
Wow, it's starting to seem like every deck is a "RARE" Deck these days.
I'd like to add a White Centurion and a Tungstene
-
For me, it would have to be the Visions or the Black Crowns. I'm not very fond of purchasing expensive decks.
-
There are some of the "rarer" decks in my collection
Red Artifice
Black Crown
Linoid Split Spade
Vision
Absolute
Brown Wynn
1979 Sahara blackjack tournament deck
Vintage Sahara casino deck
Tungstene
Pre - Release Monarch
Vintage Imperial Palace deck
Secret weapon Ace of Spades deck
Virginia Slim ( I guess their are kinda rare )
-
vision is mine, also the tranduscer fire deck went up in price and i have that one, opened though. :(
-
Curt, what is the Secret AoS deck like and would you be able to show some pictures of the cards?
-
Curt, what is the Secret AoS deck like and would you be able to show some pictures of the cards?
Its basically a deck with just ace of spades in it.

Its not really rare, easy to get a hold of if you will pay the price... harder if you want to get it cheap.
-
Once I get my Blaine Boxes they will contain my rarest decks.

It really is a great variety box!! And what a great price for the cards, am I right? :)
The cards Curt mentioned you can get for about 14 bucks + whatever shipping is on Amazon. It's from the Bicycle shop itself, so it's pretty legit/

You can buy them for US$17.60 at Amazon.com, including shipping. I always thought it bizarre that people were charging such large sums for them...

You want rare, come up with an ORIGINAL Secret Weapon deck, from the Vietnam War! That would cost beaucoup bucks!

Yup, I agree... these decks range in price a ton depending on who you try and buy them from... I payed very little for mine.
That would be awesome to own a deck that as actually from vietnam, what a great piece of history.

They're extremely tough to find. They were used as morale boosters by soldiers over there. Many report that the Viet Cong were afraid of the Lady Liberty statue and viewed the Ace of Spades as the death card, and thus a bad omen. The reality was that it gave soldiers a shot of courage, and they used them by spreading them throughout villages they attacked and onto the bodies of dead VC combatants. It became more like a signature - "we were here, and we f#%*ed up your village", that sort of thing. Some units even created crudely made personalized AoS cards so the VC would know exactly who it was that stomped in and kicked butts.
Anyway, as you can see by how they were used, they would be largely used up and spread all over the jungles of Vietnam. Finding an intact deck would be nearly impossible. The reason the request was made to USPC in the first place to make those decks was that GIs were raiding their own playing card packs to the point that there was hardly any decks left that weren't missing the AoS. USPC printed and shipped them to Vietnam, totally free of charge, and the deck box and cards themselves were identical, almost, to the newer version.
The reasons there are so many of these packs from Desert Shield lying around is that 1) Desert Shield didn't take long, and Desert Storm was even shorter, and 2) the Iraqis didn't have the same supposed superstitions that the Viet Cong were thought to have. Lots of decks were made, very few were used. The "Desert Shield" designator on the bottom of the face was to insure that these Aces/packs weren't confused for the genuine article that was used in Vietnam - but at the same time it renders the cards practically useless for magicians, unless they're willing to gamble that the spectators won't notice the extra line of text.
As I see it, they're OK for practicing fans or perhaps for picking food out of your teeth, but otherwise they're just an oddity for collectors and useless to anyone else.
-
I only have 1 nuggets. :( I almost gave them he-who-must-not-be-named...... its a good thing I didn't.
-

"He-who-must-not-be-named"...? What do you mean like that unless you're talking about Voldemort! haha

She means De'vo, it is a long story. :P

That whole "He who must not be named is not needed here, lol. But anyhow, my rare decks would be 2 -pre release monarchs, 4 Absolut Vodka, 4 Red Artifice, S&M v.1, IAOCP, Vision, Black Crown, and deciding whether I should buy some a couple LTD's or some S&M v.4....What do you guys think?
-

I would get the LTDs. I find the design of the LTDs are incredible. From the box to the cards they are awesome. The v4s are my least favorite of the series. I'm not a huge fan of the color scheme they used. It's just my opinion though. I'm sure there are many that will say the opposite haha. Let us know what you choose! :)
-
The most expensive deck (set) I own would have to be the S&M v1's, but I suppose the rarest one would be the tungstene deck, considering Dan and Dave only sold roughly 1,000 of them if I remember correctly? Pretty much all my other decks come from a 5,000+ print run. I've got some blue/red/brown wynns as well but I'm not sure how rare they are nowadays.
-
Red and Blue sealed Jerry's and two pairs of White/Black Gardens sealed.
-
A pair of Jerry's. a Golden Nugget, and a 1940s Tally-Ho.
-
Mine would probably be:
2 LTD
1 Gold Arcane
4 Black Crown
Vietnam Secret Weapon Deck(once I get it and find out if it is legit)
-
A pair of Jerry's. a Golden Nugget, and a 1940s Tally-Ho.
1940s Tally Ho deck? Where in the world did you get those?!?!
-

I belive he said he got it at the Gamblers General Store in another thread.
-
Hmm... Rarest would be Ltd, Red Artifice, and S&M V6.
ONE deck I would like to add... That's tough because my collection is only starting out and I would love to have all the out of print ones but if I had to choose, I would say Jerry's.
-

eBay. It's sealed in pristine condition too, completely undamaged. ;D
@Aaron: GGS is where I got the vintage Hoyles before the USPCC take over.

Oh my mistake, I knew you picked up some kind of vintage deck there. :)

Wow. I was surprised that the greater post here were of 'artificially' rare decks. :P
A pair of Jerry's
Green, Brown, and Black Golden Nuggets (Las Vegas)
Tall Stacks 92 and 95
Arrco Tahoes 84
Blue Ribbons
:)

Well if you go purely by price tag, then it's no wonder since I can name many different decks I have worth over $100. However, truly rare decks are indeed the vintage ones. Whereas Gold Arcane and White Centurion will fluctuate in price, a vintage deck ONLY goes up.

The expensive ones really are the vintage decks. The most expensive one I've got is the Wheel No.1 (Design #80). It's gold-gilded, with the oldest known AoS (US8A) and the high wheeler, best bower joker (the ones you see in the 125th Anniversary decks).
But I've got several rare and expensive "contemporary" decks too. Like the garden set, DB prototype set, Santa holiday set, and the 2009 Grand Opening deck.
-
Sigh... Since I only knew the joys of collecting (and afford them) quite recently, I know jack squat about vintage decks.
If only I can build a damn time machine and get all of those very cheap :'(
-

Wouldn't that be more like JAQK squat? :))
As much as I love getting the older stuff, I'd go broke in a big fat hurry if I focused my collecting on them. Sticking to the newer stuff makes it easier, and there's no shortage of reasonably priced decks in that category.

Yeah. Invest in the new ones now while they are not insanely expensive because someday they will become the rare ones. XD

Sure. As long as you'll let me. :P
Just kidding. Please don't hurt me when I get home...

Sadly I don't own any of the big name rare decks, but I have a few not many people have. I was lucky enough to get a Propaganda deck, and the Bicycle Harry Potter Deck, as well as the Samurai Deck. I just dont physically have enough money for a $100 deck, I would rather by 6 at $15. Maybe one day I shall get the good ones ;)

Yeah I also don't have the money for that! I find the newer decks are cheaper and I can enjoy them more. I don't feel bad playing with any of my decks. If I had vintage ones though it would be like a museum.... "Please don't touch that sir". ;)
I'm sure overtime I'll get a few vintage decks but right now I'm not looking for them specifically.

Also, IMO vintage decks' market is more stable and more established unlike the new artificial rare decks. And the way I see it, prices would drop significantly for artificial decks when the bubbles burst - which would be triggered by the saturation of decks on the market.
-
My rarest decks are my red artifice, LTD and black crowns. Not much for bragging. ::)

Don't worry so much about the "good" ones - get what you like, what pleases you most (and fits in your budget). You'll be happier for it.

Over time, the decks you own now will BE the vintage decks! Not every new deck coming out becomes instant paper gold, but there's enough people out there who want to PLAY with them rather than STARE at them on a shelf that those "artificially rare" decks will become even more rare, and not artificially. Decks get traded, used, damaged, lost to fire or flood, pitched into garbage cans, waterlogged at the beach, whatever - it would be different if EVERY single deck was kept preserved, but that would actually work against the collectors as a whole, because if there's a lot of them under glass, it means they're not really all that rare, are they?
Also, IMO vintage decks' market is more stable and more established unlike the new artificial rare decks. And the way I see it, prices would drop significantly for artificial decks when the bubbles burst - which would be triggered by the saturation of decks on the market.
I don't know why you're calling them "artificially rare" - they're still rare, they're just made that way from the start. USPC was making limited edition decks long before other companies decided to get into the business. If anything, a deck that's both vintage and limited edition will be worth far more than a deck that's simply vintage of the same year.
For example, take two decks of the same year: 1918. There's a Bicycle Rider Back deck, quantity-wise very similar to the ones we buy today in the ugly "Standard" boxes, though made in a far different way back then, and proportionate to the demand of the time period and printing methods available. Our other deck would be the "Big Gun" Bicycle deck - also marked as Bicycle 808, but with a unique back meant I believe as a sort of morale booster for the people back home who want to support the troops in Europe. They were made in a shorter run, for a shorter time, not unlike any of the 5,000-or-less print runs we see today, except they probably made more than 5,000 back then (still far less than the Rider Backs, though).
If you had each of those made-in-1918 decks sitting in front of you now, in identical condition, you know the "Big Gun" deck would be far more valuable than the Rider Backs. This despite being "artificially rare" as opposed to genuinely rare. In fact, that "artificially rare" deck was probably worth what the Rider Backs are worth today about 40-60 years ago, adjusting for inflation!
Yes, there's a bubble in the market, and decks hot off the presses (or made within the last decade or so) will take a hit in their value. But in the long run, like almost any investment, the chances of it appreciating in value are far greater than depreciating.
