Title: De La Rue - Comedia Playing Cards
Post by: PurpleIce on March 02, 2015, 12:33:18 PM
So...... I have been on a long break, but still always shopping for cards.  ;)

Found this deck in a flea market and would be very very much interested to find out more about any information, even this brand, de la rue, and also of course the "value" of this deck. I found one listing in ebay, but then again, i know never to trust the prices in ebay.

The deck is in good condition with 1 x sealed and 1 x open + good condition. Box is also in good condition except a few "brown water marks" probably from the humidity or something. In fact, my deck condition is somewhat similar to the one posted on ebay (except my box is still one piece without any "taping"), so I'm just going to use the ebay link as i am a little lazy to upload the photo.  :P

Nice find. Stig Linberg very well known artist for ceramics and his work is very collectible. This set desirable. I'd venture to say worth well north of $100. Made in 1958 I believe.

That looks FANTASTIC.  I might have seen the art before - as Tom mentioned, he works a lot in ceramics.  But that is an excellent find.  Well done!

Lucky beggar.  Flea markets are few and far between where I live.  There used to be a big one at Yonkers Raceway, but I think they ended that when the Empire Casino area was expanded - again.

I like the over sized suit index.  It kind of makes up for the loss of the suit indicator.

This is definitely a deck I would be delighted to come across in physical form :) While minutely small, I do feel a nostalgic connection to it in a most round-about way. Back in my ceramic days I completed a diploma in (industrial) ceramics and design over in Sweden, the course had a close working relationship with the large porcelain and ceramic factories in the country, which extended to regular internships and post-grad programs. During a month at Gustavsberg I met designers who had worked under Stig Lindberg in his art director days. At the time, Karin Björkquist was orchestrating the final touches to the "Nobel" dinner set (I remember numerous re-takes of a coffee-cup, which was giving the modelling team grey hairs ... ;) )  "Nobel" does have a minimalist appeal with clean lines and plenty of gold, though I have to say that I much preferred seeing Lindberg's whimsical and colourful works on display.

In the Comedia courts there is such a clever reference to Lindberg's ceramic background; with plates, vases and bowls dictating the shape of each figure ... even weaponry and accessories could be seen to look like eating utensils :)

Fabulous flea market find PurpleIce :)

That's fascinating information. I have looked at that deck several times and never made the ceramics [plates, bowls, etc.] connection. Thank you for the post.
