Title: VandaType deck - hand lettered typographic design
Post by: davegk on January 08, 2015, 01:52:04 PM
Hey guys,

I've been wanting to create a typographic deck since before I launched the original Vanda decks over 2 years ago and have finally decided what I want to do with it.

The deck will be created using hand lettering, then digitized and cleaned up a bit. Every pip in the deck will be typographic and each card will have a unique design with a different type style for each suit.

I've been inspired by Emmanuel's process of creating one card each week and will be following a similar timeline with this project. Every card will be laser cut in baltic birch wood at 5"x7" and they will be numbered sequentially in standard deck order. These unique wooden cards will be available for purchase along with the final printed decks.

You can check out weekly photos on the Vanda instagram feed (http://instagram.com/vandacards) and I'm planning to set up a blog with more info as well.

I think I'm happy with the layout of the pips and general structure for the card faces, but will welcome input on the back and tuck when we get to that point.

-David

IMHO:

Try to add small planks for your typographic engraving. For aces - shapes of appropriate suits. For court cards and... maybe number cards - rectangular shapes. Different interesting shapes can be chosen for number cards, actually.

Different edditions - mahogany, pine, oak, etc.

Good luck.

@Don: Thanks! I have a new day job as a Senior Visual Designer for a startup in Palo Alto so that keeps me pretty busy, but I've also been working on a number of deck concepts in my free time. I hope to have lots of new and exciting stuff to show you guys this year :)

@Collector: I'm not quite sure what you mean by "add small planks"...can you elaborate?

I'm still not really clear what you mean...

Are you talking about adding a shape outline around the typographic design?

Also I should point out that the spot cards will have standard pip layouts but each small pip will be typographic...you'll see soon :)
