Hmmm.... Not sure how I feel about this deck.  I kind of like it and yet something seems off.  The font on the courts is different than that of the tuck and ace but thats not it.... ::)

This deck is great haha. There's a Wels Catfish wearing a crown.:))

It may be the indices and colors. The side by side front and pip, color block vs muted colors of the faces. I felt it, when I first saw it. Then I decided to roll with it and it turned into a pleasure. The little fish skele at the bottom of the tuck is on the card back. It's actually pretty charming from what I saw.  :)

It's cute, but a few things kill it for me.  Horizontal indices, for one.  A very limited color palette, for two - this could have looked really stunning in full color.  In this, for lack of a better term, "slate blue-scale" they look too much like each other.

He's changed the indices to the more functional layout that we're used to. I think it helps quite a bit. While I won't go heavy on this, I think it's worthy of snagging a deck or two myself. :)

The indices do look better however the indices on the red cards need to be the same as on the black.  The red should show through the graphic that I assume was added as a filler for the naked space left when changing them from vertical to horizontal.  :)

It would be nice to see the numbered cards have that many fish on them, eg. 7 fish on the 7 cards.

It might be a little too cramp, especially on the high numbers.

I have to agree. It looks nice for a while...but gets real boring real fast. I wouldn't really go full colour, by a few more different splashes definitely would help

I also hope he does something different to the Aces as well. Maybe use bobbers or floats as well. While the hooks are probably trying to say "A", 4 of the same hooks really seems dull

I am absolutely appalled at the lack of puns in response to this deck. Really, people! It's called "Fishing for Compliments," and nobody else has noted that this deck as a lure?

Sheesh!

GOOD: Customized each card in the deck. Great resource on fish. Good style. Great box.
BAD: Is the K font completely different to the A? I am not into fishing.

Sheesh!

Not bad, cod do batter. If you can think of a better fish pun, let minnow.

I think a chance to defend my deck is in order :) Many of the responses are to old design. My current Kickstarter has fixes to all of the problems mentioned earlier. There is also a survey underway to give backers the chance to decide the colours of the suits that ties in with the project I will share some more images now of the full deck but they can all be seen on my Kickstarter.

Its great to see all the comments about my deck also, thanks for spreading the word and I have listened carefully to everyones advice.

best wishes and good luck with your own projects. Feel free to ask any questions.

@Pixel - So your changing all 4 suit colors.  Just remember you can't please everyone.  If all else fails, make it simpler.  Stick with two colors.   ? and black are good.  If you make it a 4 color card suit, I can't play solitaire with theses.  It confuses me.

The back needs to be different colour to the front of the cards so people can be sure that they are the right way up, these dont have white faces remember, and I think purple works nicely with the aquatic colours

Stacey, thanks for coming to the Playing Card Forum!

You'll noticed that I merged all of your topics into a single topic, the one that preexisted the ones you created.  You're new here and didn't know the protocol, which is:

- for a deck still being designed, you post about it to the Design & Development board,
- when the deck is either for sale or on Kickstarter, you post about it here on the Playing Card Plethora
- we try keeping decks in the Plethora to a single topic, as this makes it easier to find later when someone in the future wants to learn more about your deck.

As you can see by reading all of the topic, your deck has a few fans here!  We welcome you to become a part of the discussion - or any other discussion taking place around here.  When you have a moment, I invite you to create a topic about yourself on our Introduce Yourself board so we can give you a proper welcome.

Hi,

awesome, yes I am getting to grips with it now, I didn't actually start this thread about my deck, and many images were submitted that were out dated and as I was currently running my campaign I decided to try and spread the new designs and break away from this topic. Luckily some member had picked up on this already and posted the new designs, but I thought it was a shame to read the comments about problems that no longer existed with the deck.

Thanks for the sweep up. Best wishes.

It says on the page that LPCC will be handling the fulfillment of her decks. I have never heard of this happening before the playing card manufacturer itself becoming the fulfillment center. Has anyone else heard of this happening before? Just strikes me as extremely odd. Here's a quote from the KS page. Aquila wasn't fulfilled by Legends for example.

Quote
All shipping will be handled by Hong Kong fulfilment centre by Legends staff. This allows me to offer free shipping internationally.
Title: Re: Fishing For Compliments Deck (KS)
Post by: Squiddle Ink on November 17, 2014, 10:04:36 PM
Its not Legends, Legends use the Hong Kong Fulfilment centre. The deck Sishou also used this method.

Legends are just used to working in conjunction with them and have the price lists for each country and extra handling fees to hand. I thought they were reasonable. I won't be making money but that is not my goal here. I wanted to offer shipping to everyone so its all factored in to cover pretty much cost.

Another think i could probably think of is, stick with red or pinkish for diamonds and hearts for the pips, but use dark purple for the spades and clubs, just so there is some link between the front and the back. The black doesnt look that great against the bluish background also. The only tricky part is to make the shades dark/light enough so that people can differentiate immediately between the two colours, since red and purple can be quite similar in certain ways. Just my humble opinion.

Here is a sample from Legends playing card who I have chosen to build the decks. They will be handled by fulfilment centre and posted internationally at no extra cost to the deck price.

I'm confused now. Who is doing the printing??
Title: Re: Fishing For Compliments Deck (KS)

LEGENDS will print the deck. MPC is providing just a sample deck, they offer single deck mock ups. this way I can hold it and check artwork more carefully. Legends will send sample during the printing process. If my deck is funded.

So it's a fulfillment center Used and Recommended by LPCC. Okay, that makes more sense.

Yes in the pricing, a single deck to America was $6, and this was one of the most expensive so its all sort of factored into ti as I say I wont be making much money but the printing and the worst case scenario postage is factored into the pledge costs. But better then bringing them all to UK first to me because that would be 20% customs on the whole crate before even posting. UK is the meanest place in the world to Playing card creators. But I've found a way to share it.

PurpleIce, it's a pretty common practice these days to use MPC to create a sample deck or two and to do the remainder of the print run with another company.  USPC charges a small fortune for a single sample deck and the printing process itself is likely no different that what MPC uses - the only variations would be in the paper, and sometimes MPC prints a wee bit dark.  The last time I checked, MPC sample decks were about one-tenth the cost of USPC sample decks - less if your order more samples than just one.

It's a great way to have a deck in hand for photography and such rather than using computer-generated images.

I chose the title Fishing For Compliments because I intend to begin a "For Compliments" range of cards the first being obviously fishing and then I will move into other categories such as "Going Primal For Compliments" which will be a deck featuring species of ape, this range will continue each year with a new topic (& a little luck).

Thats correct, I use this method as well to provide a worldwide free shipping.
Its one of the best choices for UK creators as the 20% import tax is insane.

obviously would be embossed into that brass in reality.

I wouldn't use brass - typically a fishing lure is something shiny and silvery.  Plain old stainless steel would look great - and the other side of the coin could have an image of a lure on it!

Coins are pretty popular - I'm guessing it makes for a secondary collection of collectibles.  Pro card players use them as a "card guard", a way of indicating to the dealer that the hand is still active and to not touch it.  Some use them as indicators of the big blind, little blind and dealer positions on the table in a poker game with a single dealer.

It's true they can do some pretty incredible things with coinage. Unfortunately every little extra bumps the price on the card guard, may be best to keep it a little simple if offering one at all. I don't know though.

While I do like card guards, I never really see them as must haves. Of course, there are always exceptions but those are obvious. For the fish deck, I think a lure or fishing spoon or whatever it is they use on those catch whatsits on those big fish shows, kind of card guard would be cooler than the typical disc. A big fishing hook would be cool too haha.

Here is the idea for the coins... I have just mocked these up in photoshop for now. I'm in talks with coinsforanything and it wouldn't bump the price up too much. I can add these as an extra reward and if there's enough interest.

Say "double fish bone logo" five times fast.    :) The AoS and bone fish logo is a good compromise.  So you're going with Nickel coin?  1.5, 1.75 or 2"  Wish we were on the metric system.  They do have Satin Nickel coin for .50 extra.

SOme rough ideas for pips, would this improve the deck. Of course all the fish could be used for the twelve court cards so there's no loss of any detail.

For ease of use, I'd suggest using lighter colors for red suits and darker colors for black suits, in addition to your colored index backgrounds.  Even with a proper index, some can find it confusing if the suits are either monochrome or reversed in terms of dark suits (black) and light suits (red).  For example, playing solitaire with a pack of Artifice Tundra or Bicycle Ghost requires a little more thought than I'd normally apply to the task - they have all-black pips in the center, while the index pips are either all-black for black suits or red with a black border for red suits.  The numbers/letters being all black on all the indices didn't help me at all.

Hey Don thanks - so do you mean use a lighter colour for he entire card face so they are immediately distinguishable or just lighter pips?.... Best wishes.

The design and theme has grown on me over these past few days... and it's probably grown on many more, because it appears that funding has almost doubled in the last 24 hours -- something like £2000!

Great going! :D

Less than £800 to go and 3 days remaining. For the love of cod, this is not the time or the plaice to get tight fishted. Even if your not going to use them, buy them for the halibut, because they will leaving you breaming from ear-to-ear. Mullet over

Cheers!  Glad to see you made it.  The deck wasn't to my taste, but my tastes aren't the sole arbiter of what's good.  Your deck is good!
