Cool.  Anybody know if these are a private reseller reprint or something different (like last year's BJ's Heritage Design Series)?

Thanks.

Can you imagine what it was like in the pre-computer days to come up with all the cool and interesting designs that Bicycle has used?  And to make most of them symmetrical as well.  They must've had one helluva design team.

jeez! that must have been ridiculous. I'm only a fan of the cupid backs really. The other one's aren't that appealing to me. I do like that they are reprinting some of these vintage backs though. It's very cool to see some of the old card designs and just the history of Bicycle coming back to life.

I would imagine that the art style used in playing cards derived from the inability to create symmetry as easily as we can today (though in any complex design symmetry is still difficult to accomplish).

Keep in mind that they wouldn't design the entire back. It would be much more logical in my opinion to design a quarter of the back then mirror it horizontally and vertically. Or design half the back and mirror it vertically.

How easy do you think it was to "mirror" any design using 1885 technology?  I get the feeling that it just wasn't too simple.  Even with a computer these days some would find it a bit challenging - you mentioned your own protodeck symmetry issues on another topic around here somewhere.

Just as a guess - you could design a quarter of the back, copy it to a silkscreen, and through placements and flips as needed, create a sort-of symmetrical design.  But then how do you get that made?  Weren't printing plates still hand-crafted for anything that didn't utilize movable type?  If you look at the old-timey decks that have hit the market (Bicycle 125, any Bee deck from CARC), the front and back designs (fronts especially, but also the Bike 125 backs), which are largely faithful reproductions, look practically hand-drawn!  A lot of decks from a decade or two earlier had some of the simplest card backs imaginable - a simple cross-hatched pattern of lines, or little stars or dots or whatever in a simple repeating (and not always symmetrical) pattern.  The challenge to make the classic card backs back then must have been huge to say the least.

They look similar to the two decks of cards that you get with the Bicycle Solitaire pack

I did confirm with USPC that these are a limited retail release through the BJ's Warehouse Club, just like last year's "Heritage Design' series.  Unfortunately, none of the BJ's locations near me have them (at least not yet).  However, I did score 6 more of last year's sets for $11.99 each- not bad for 5 decks plus the latest version of "Official Rules of Card Games."    ;D

Actually one of those backs was printed not long ago, but on a different deck - #39 was used on the back of a special edition of Texans made to promote Marlboro cigarettes.  You might still be able to find them around.

I like the old and new Fan Backs - new in particular - as well as the two-color backs.  I find 43 and 47 visually interesting.  There's just so many cool ones - but a fair number of boring ones as well.

I want to get this series, as well as the old Vintage series.  I got the Heritage decks from a few years ago and I like them.  Good stock and traditionally cut.

I managed getting two sets - I think I paid $9 each set.  They're kinda cool, and it's nice that this go-around is in four colors instead of just two.

BJ's is offering a special for the holidays - get a free two-month membership!  You can also add a one-year paid membership at discount if you wish.  Offer ends on New Year's Eve.

Just remember to bring your own shopping bags or be prepared to either buy some reuseables or scrounge for empty boxes.  They're very European like that...

It's probably a wholesaler - I did a quick Google search, (which I recommend) I found this:

Is that waht you guys mean?

Congrats anhedonia for your first post, but that might not be the seller we are looking for. When I searched the site, there are no decks. The only close item related to what we are looking for is a pack of poker chips.

Holy cow, KPop - you're WAY off on this.  Anhedonia is correct.  (BTW: welcome, Anhedonia.  I take it you're a Woody Allen fan?  Or perhaps a Diane Keaton fan?)
 ;)

You probably aren't finding any playing cards on the BJ's website because most of their business is from their brick-and-mortar stores.  Like many such shops, not everything in the store is online - and in some cases, vice versa is true as well, that a store will have online offerings you can't get in the physical locations.  I tried finding those Walmart-exclusive Bicycle decks online, no luck; tried in a local store, I found their last pair in stock.  I'm hoping after the holidays they'll have more in stock, or I'll find them at another location.

The current Heritage Series can only be obtained in a physical BJ's location or from an after-market retailer, most of which are charging nearly triple what it costs in the stores and are selling it without the cool box it comes in.

Tell him to hurry - BJ's Wholesale Club is just that, a club.  You have to be a member to shop there.  Memberships start at 50 or 60 bucks a year.  Free two-month trial memberships, along with discounted paid memberships, are available between now and 1/1/2012.
