Have you antique photos where we see antique playing cards but where we can recognize the maker or the name of the deck ?
I begin with two :
1 : A young woman has in her hand four antique American Kalamazoo aces.
2 : Three men play poker with an antique Bicycle deck, Expert (or Old Fan?) back.
Now it is your turn.. Thank you in advance to everyone who will participate ;)

There's an entire book of photos like these, only recently released. I think Larry Lubliner wrote it. I'm pretty sure it's for sale at dananddave.com.
BTW: the subjects of the photos would never have called them "antique" at the time the photo was actually taken. You could, in theory, call EVERYTHING you see in the photos "antique" if you think about it, so why call any of them antique? :))
After a close examination of the image scans, I'm thinking that the deck used in the second photo was the Expert Back rather than the Old Fan Back. My reasoning is that, while the resolution of the scan isn't high enough for a great amount of detail, it is plainly visible that the images in the corners of the deck back design are perfectly round, as you would find in the Expert Back, and not more "oval"/fan-shaped as you would find in the Old Fan Back.

This is a great idea. I think we have a few and will check around our albums over the next week or so.

Not pinochle. Among the cards on the table are a two and a four. Poker deck, more likely. Maybe bridge, but the size looks more like poker.

That is a wonderful photograph. I wonder if the layout of the cards can be identified as a specific game. Solitaire? Fortune telling? Whatever it is, she clearly does not approve!

Here is an official portrait of Andrew Dougherty, a major manufacturer of Antique Playing Cards in the United States.
I hope you enjoy it!

Cynthia Kuber Herbst, heiress and wife of Theodore Herbst, with KEM Cameo cards. Mr. Herbst bought control of KEM cards around 1937. Claimed in one book to be the face on the KEM ace of spades.

These are fantastic images!!! The Andrew Dougherty pic is superb!!! Thank you for sharing.
While it's not that old, here's Groucho Marx and a contestant on YOU BET YOUR LIFE holding jumbo sized rider back 808s.

I am quite sure the 'contestant' is none other than the famous bridge expert Charles Goren. Marx was know for his passion for bridge.

The Getty website says the 'contestant' is Sanita Pelkey. Did Mr. Goren have an alias?

It's mis-titled. The very next image at the Getty website shows Groucho with a woman in a lovely sweater - she's described as Sanita Pelkey, Moulin Rouge showgirl.

The 'lovely sweater' certainly isn't Charles Goren!

I guess that would make more sense than Sanita Pelkey. Especially seeing as how Mr. Goren is holding 13 cards.

That's a match, for certain!

Thank you Lee!
I am happy that you appreciated the Dougherty pic. The "Jumbo" and others on gettyimages are really fun :)

Here are two other antique photos where we can see the decks that are used :
- The first one shows two men with a Bicycle #808 Pneumatic back n°1 (c1894) in their hands.
- The second depicts a woman covered with Andrew Dougherty cards : the first Outing #17 (Hochman AD29, c1892) with a Buffalo back.

Those are great Maxime. Thanks for posting them.

Thank you Tom :) Just a quick last one in this holiday season : a quiet card game with Kalamazoo Playing Card Co. (c1906)

Do you think you could identify the deck on this photo please Tom ? I thought that the design of the Ace of spades looked like a little of a Caterson model or L29/L41 for the black border but I couldn't find an exact version in the Hochman.

Hi Cryptocard
Joyeux Noel - I think it is Bay State SU26 but I can't be sure.

Thank you Tom! I hope that Nöel was joyful for you too. Indeed, the SU26 is very similar and even if it's not sure, I did not find better than that. Another pleasant photo (or photo montage?) for this beginning of year : a game of cards with an antique Star Back.

Looks like Bicycle Margin Star or one of the Texan backs

I think It's not the Margin Star because of the border apparently not pictured on the photo. However, can we conclude that the deck on the photo is a Texan#45, or is it possible that this star back was used for another Russell & Morgan brand ?

The only R&M backs with a big star I can remember seeing are these two. Could not make out the details in the photo. Based on your comment I think it is TEXAN.

I would agree. I've seen this back used on two modern decks as well. The Bicycle Star deck is one - it was originally meant for distribution in China but some made it to these shores. The other is a premium deck made for Marlboro cigarettes. In both decks, there's fine lines radiating out from the stars to the edge of the card, which has a line going around the inside edge of the cards' white border.
I'm not sure of the year on the Marlboro deck - I think it was in the '90s. It may have "crossed over" from modern to vintage by now!

Believe Marlborough 1970's. Definitely Vintage

Entirely possible. I remember as a kid having ad decks for Kool and Newport cigarettes.

1984. Info found on Hochman pg. 94.

Thanks Tom!! On these photos especially, I can identify the decks because of the back or the Ace of Spades and by making a zoom on the photo. A precious indication to find the manufacturer. I have just a doubt concerning the deck used by Theda Bara but I really think that it's a Standard PCC deck.

A small photographic treasure.. I would like to share with you this nice photo that I particularly like. It shows Lilian Russell (1860-1922), an American actress and singer sitting next to playing cards. The rare deck seen here is a Superior Steamboats #9 (Hochman NU2), made by The National Card Company since 1885. Personally, I find this picture really beautiful and it's a bit unusual to see an antique deck so distinctly on a photograph of this period. I hope you will enjoy that too!

Thanks Tom ;) I also really like these two. They show Clara Gordon Bow (1905-1965) in scenes from the film No Limit directed by Frank Tuttle in 1931. She play the role of Helen 'Bunny' O'Day and on the first photo, she is holding a Bicycle deck with Expert back.
-
Another interesting photo (c1890) of a card game with five men. One of them holds in the hands one of the first Ace of Spades made by Russell & Morgan. However, I am not sure if it is a Tigers #101 (Hochman US1), a Steamboat #999 (Hochman US7) or another..
If you have an idea, please don't hesitate to post ;)

Here are five other antique photos which show antique playing cards made by the United States Playing Card Company.
1: Harry Houdini plays card game with an antique USPCC deck and card holdout.
2: A woman dressed with Russell & Morgan Printing Company playing cards.
3: Two Men play cards with one of the first Bicycle Rider back decks.
4: Four cowboys play cards with an antique Bicycle Acorn Back deck.
5: Charles Ainsworth play a solitaire game with a "Russell & Morgan Factories" deck.
