Title: LTD promo at Ellusionist
Post by: CBJ on May 04, 2012, 06:35:47 PM
Ellusionist posted this on Facebook

"Remember these? You should.
Come Tuesday, you might just be able to get your hands on one... or 1,000. How? Stay tuned..."

If they really are going to put these up for sale... wouldn't that screw anyone who had to buy a bunch of product to get 1?

I really don't think they'd put these up for sale. But they may have a promotion where if you spend a certain amount, you can get them.

Although, didn't they say that these would only be available during that holiday time?

Last November... Ellusionist wrote...

"The Ltd. Deck will only be available between Nov. 22nd and Dec 31st, ONLY as a Free Gift in the $150 tier or Contest Giveaway Prize"

 and

"they will ONLY be available as a gift at $150 level from Nov 22nd - Dec 31st 2011. After that, gone forever."

and Marcus wrote...

"Any LTD decks left in the vault after the Holiday promotion is over will not be sold, and not be destroyed. Contest prizes and perhaps any future promotions - there's no set plan and any wordings people might've seen earlier is not set in stone."

A company changing it's mind? Unthinkable!

It could simply be that they're announcing a new contest and that the Ltd. deck is the prize.

But 1000 LTD's? What kind of contest is this? I've never seen anything like it. More or less, I like it.

I agree with you guys... unless E has been abducted by aliens and truned their brains into mush and mind controlled them to place the LTDs on sale.

But in all honesty I highly doubt they will put it on sale. Promo, giveaway, contests are our best bets.

i knew it !! there were think of way to get ltd on the market .. during that period when LTD deck were available as a free gift , my friend and i were talking about they were going to sell it or something like that since they cant keep the remaining LTD for themself ( and we think that the remaining might be around 1000 to 2000)

Based on comments I heard from E staff regarding the holiday season giveaways, I'd be shocked if there were 2000 of ANY of their rare decks remaining.  There has to be closer to 1000, maybe 1500 on the outside.  As of last summer, they reported they had 1000 of BG1E and 4000 of Gold Arcane.  We know they have far less than 2000 Red Artifice, because they sold off 3000 of 5000 on the first day they were available.  The one deck they gave away the most of at the holidays was Ltd., and I was told there weren't many stocks remaining on any of their rare giveaway decks.

I doubt it would be a contest if they mentioned "you might just be able to get your hands on one... or 1,000". I think they are really going to put them up on sale. If that happens, the servers are going to have to brave a storm on Tuesday night, and the E team will be pelted with angry feedback from those who dished out big bucks to get the deck.

Or, it could be a first-come-first-serve giveaway contest. That doesn't go against what they said about what they were going to do with these decks..

I'm thinking some kind of contest.  There's no way one person would buy up a thousand decks at once like that!  Except perhaps an eccentric billionaire.

I'm thinking they're going to blow out their entire remaining stock of Ltd. in one massive giveaway contest - one lucky bastard will walk off with a thousand decks, many others will win something more like bricks or individual decks, and none will be left when the dust settles.

This could mean they're making room in the lineup for a new rare deck...

I didn't get any LTD's at their sale, so I am not feeling f___ed by E. I think they will be giving 1 person the opportunity of getting any number between 1 and 1,000 through a contest with only 1 winner.

Well I'm thinking that there will be 1 winner, and that winner will randomly be given any number of LTDs between 1 and 1000.

Hey, I would kill for a brick of LTD's! That's 900$ worth. And 1,000 is 75,000$ worth. You could sell them for 10$ each and if you sell all of them you would have enough money to buy 2 of each deck produced since 2004... WOW!

I would definitely like to get my hands on some LTDs! Have to see what they have in mind though.. If it's another one of their promotions like the GA, probably won't be able to get it. But if its a contest....  ;)

You didn't read the post you quoted, did you?  At least not carefully.  I stated that as of last summer, they stated in the blog that they had 1000 BG1E and 4000 Gold Arcane.  Shortly after that blog post, they had the Red Artifice sale, which brought them from 5000 to 2000 in a single 24-hour period.

With all the promotions since then, the numbers of these decks are dwindling.  Someone from E (I think Marcus) mentioned that they had little stock left on all of their rare decks after the holidays.

This is why I suspect they're going to blow the rest of the LTDs out in a whopper of a giveaway - they're making room for a new rare deck in the lineup.  And I think it's not so coincidental that the offer/contest/whatever is on the same night as the grand opening of HOPC...

When asked on their Facebook page, they said it had nothing to do with HOPC and BC. They said it didn't have anything to do with that company, so I'm guessing it'll be a partnership with another company, maybe D&D?

I can't see E associating themselves with any other company, They are easily the biggest magic company. Why bring on more competition?

That doesn't even make sense, how could the coincidence between E and TBC mean something between E and D&D? :-\
We're probably just overthinking it, E says it's a coincidence so let's just take it as such for now.

Here's what they said:
"Wrong company guys. We've got nothing to do with HOPC.
-Jake"
So I assumed that they meant that this release had nothing to do with TBC but by "Wrong company" they meant it was a partnership with another company, just not TBC. Idk. I am probably jumping to conclusions.

Holy freakin' crap!  How could you guys have missed what I was saying?

I was hinting that the fact that both promotions are occurring on the same day indicates that they're competing for each other's customers, whether they wanted to or not!  There was no implication of E or TBC teaming with ANYONE else.

"Starting with our double DVD release this Tuesday at 1PM PST / 4PM EST, we will leave the very last of the LTD decks up for grabs. 72 hours. Less than 1,000 decks. Purchase any two DVDs over $24,95 each, and get an LTD deck. Get prepared, offer ends when either the decks are gone or the time is up.

Tuesday 1PM PST / 4PM EST. 72 hours. LTD." - Ellusionist

That pisses me off because one of the reasons I even got an LTD deck was because they said it would only be available during that holiday time!

I don't think this is worth it for me personally. You have to pay 50$ of DVDs that you won't be able to resell just to get 1 LTD worth 70$. + This huge sale will drive the LTD price down and will increase the availability enormously on the aftermarket. It would have been nicer if they had done something like "get 1 free LTD for every 50$ spent including half on a 25$+ DVD".

You can but what's the point for the buyer? What would he get from buying from you? The same price, no extra gifts, a higher shipping price, and no proof that the DVD is in perfect condition. You see resellers for playing cards much more often than brand new DVD resellers.

I'm not assuming that you can sell DVDs for the same price that E would. What I'm trying to say is that it's more economical to buy the two DVDs, get the LTD, and then try to recoup some of the losses by reselling the DVDs. This is assuming you only want the LTD to begin with. Same thing happened with the IAOCP book/deck.

Yes but even at a lower price there is very little demand for resold DVDs. The IAOCP book was a different story since it was rare and only available for 80$ while these DVDs aren't.
Title: Re: LTD sale at Ellusionist??
Post by: shutupdangit on May 08, 2012, 09:55:18 PM
Last I checked IAOCP was still available on D&D's website.

Also, demand isn't as important in this scenario because we're not looking to immediately make a profit, just recoup. This means that even if I sold the DVDs for $5 each, I'd still be getting some money back. If I have a brand new DVD for that low, then there's a better chance of selling it than if it were $24.95. The point is that there is more freedom than just buying only a deck.
Title: Re: LTD sale at Ellusionist??
Post by: NathanCanadas on May 08, 2012, 10:04:42 PM
I don't get your point. Sure, you can get some money back for the DVD you are buying but there is less demand, you sell for a much lower price than the normal market price, the money you make reselling the DVDs, if you have any buyers at all, are much smaller than the price you spent on them in the first place, and you are spending 50+$ for 1 deck that is worth 70$ and cost 2$ to make and whose market price is diving.
Title: Re: LTD sale at Ellusionist??

For example if you buy 2 dvd the price is 60 and shipping is 10 making it $70 for the 2 dvd and 1 ltd deck .. and you resell the dvd .. maybe you sell it for 25usd .. then both the dvd you will get 50usd .. $70 -50 = 20 .. which mean you bought a $20 for the deck ..

you can also wait until the LTD promotion is over before selling it .. some people won't know there is even the promotion since they did not write it at their website

If you think you'll resell those DVDs for 25$ each if you bought them for 30$, you're dreaming. And most people will know about the LTD promotion. You can have your own opinion but I think E are really just owning us with this offer.

i am dreaming ??? you must be joking .. sometimes there will be pure smoke for sale .. and there are selling it for maybe 130usd and people still buy it .. you know why boy ?? because ellusionist is selling it for 147usd without shippping !! here is a example i randomly toke from ebay ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gaff-Arcane-DVD-Ellusionist-Excellent-magic-tricks-you-Gaff-Arcane-Deck-/380388145574?pt=UK_Collectables_MagicTricks_RL&hash=item5890e679a6 . 5 people bought this dvd ..

You example is invalid. It is for british buyers. The seller obviously bought in big quantity from E, saving up on shipping and getting extras with his order. This sale is worth it ONLY for british sellers. Maybe there are some examples to proove your point, but they are rare, and this one isn't one.

what are rare?? pure smoke is rare ?? arcane gaff dvd is rare ?? all of them are for sale at ellusionist .. and also you can also sell your ltd deck for maybe 50usd .. then minus the 20 from example i gave you just now .. you earned extra $30 .. people in the us will also buy the cheaper dvd .. because after the promotion is over then you can no longer the ltd deck .. so you think buyer will be angry with you for getting the ltd deck ?? they wont because if they do , they will have to buy from ellusionist .. then he have to pay at the retail price , with shipping , tax and also wait for delivery time

The point I'm trying to make is that they can be sold in the first place. The other point is that the amount of money a dvd or deck is worth is completely arbitrary as long as I can sell them.

And I agree on that point. However, while you are almost guaranteed you can easily resell decks for 50¢ cheaper and get a high level of demand, are you sure you will be able to sell you DVDs, even at 25% off?

As a matter of fact, yes, you can.  People like saving money, period.  Post it on eBay with a reasonable shipping cost, and you will sell the DVDs.

I find it both surprising and not-so-surprising that the LTD. deck is still available, with about 7.5 hours left in the promotion.  Surprising that the demand for the deck isn't higher, not-so-surprised because of the purchase requirement.  It's designed to eliminate collectors and favor magicians.  Factor in the massive quantity of DVDs that people bought for the winter promotion and the demand is sharply reduced - leaving only people willing to take a slight loss to obtain a deck that exceeds the loss once the DVD's are sold.

I think you are right Don. As you've noticed, many of their decks are sold out (series 1800s, tally-ho viper circle back, white-pipped black tiger...) I think now they are trying to get more buyers for their DVDs, which they produce a huge amount of at a low price, rather than only collectors buying their cards.

The Circle backs and Tiger white pips are out of stock simply because they've been discontinued, and the 1800's are out of stock because we didn't anticipate them to turn into such a popular Valentines gift (no, seriously). With the Artifice in two colors, the Arcanes, the Black tigers, Ghosts and Black Ghosts, three Masters, Tally-Ho Fan backs, Infinity and whichever ones I might've forgotten, I wouldn't say many of our decks are sold out right now.  ;) In fact, the only deck in production we're out of stock on is the 1800's and we're expecting the red to be back in stock within a week or two.

As for the "huge amount at a low price" - that doesn't really take into consideration the costs for royalty, graphics, the actual production and post production etc. Not to mention all the Mountain Dew and pizza.
