Title: Dealer's Dozen
Post by: IAmTheChin on March 29, 2012, 11:20:21 AM
This is more a question for the vintage collector. We all know that decks used to be smaller back in the day with the thinner stocks, etc. I've stored a lot of my old more valuable decks in a box and could always fit 13 on their sides.

I've had two bricks of these in my collection and never thought about it.

The modern day brick is 12, but the Dealer's Dozen is 13. They're about the same width as a Jerry's Nugget deck and that time period. The stamps however are the earliest transition from those postage style stamps to the very first sticker kinds.

The question I'm asking is whether this is whether or not this kind of quantity packaging was normal back then, or if this was a special brick? It is a special Centennial Edition, but the boxes are really close to the same size as the current brick boxes we have today. For the record the 13th deck is laid on its side on the right.

Were the old bricks always in sets of 13?

I don't have sufficient knowledge to answer your question but I do know that in most brick boxes today if you put cards sideways, you can only fit 11. If you were to put all the decks in this Dealer's Dozen brick box sideways, you should only be able to fit 12.

I've posted these on another thread.. but I couldn't find it.

Modern bricks can come in the dealer's dozen as well.  Here are some pics I took at a store in Toronto.

Toward the middle of her unboxing (3:35), SacProductions101 gets a tournament dozen pack:

@Iamthechin... I guess you aren't interested in selling?  Did you happen to receive any of the PMs? A simple not interested would suffice... Thanks... -J.

Such boxes aren't unheard of, but they're not common, at least not in the States.  Those Bicycle Dealer's Dozens were packaged for Canada, as you can see by the English and French wording on it.

I bought an empty "Tournament Dozen" Bicycle box on eBay, but it's shaped to look like an oversized box of Bikes!  I think there's a photo of it in my topic on meeting David Blaine.  In reality, the box is large enough to hold more than 13 decks, but they designed inserts into the box to only allow 13 to fit.  It even has a jumbo deck seal on the lid!
