So last year I was bored during school and I remembered that old poem/ song about all the cards and what they showed. This lead me to spend 56 lessons drawing 56 different cards. I never put them through as playing cards, instead I made them into a card game, and only kept 48 in. I gave them to my friend as a christmas present and they loved them - and what I really liked was explaining every card, where the inspiration came from, and I think they loved the fact it was personal. So here is my question...
What do you guys think of a completely hand drawn deck? No editing in photoshop, no errors taken out - a deck of 56 cards, hand drawn, scanned in, and printed on uspcc stock? Obviously you want the backs to look professional and sleek, like a rider back, or club special - but each face (as long as you could tell what the card was) can be whatever surely? I mean, playing cards are art, and we spend most of the time looking at the faces, which are normally blank?! It makes no sense. The deck would be fine in card games, it would totally pop in magic tricks, and (speaking as a collector) it would be a dream for us.
On top of that, the thing that is really important to me is the story, so I was thinking about producing a book (available as one of the reward tears on a funding system) that detailed the story behind every card. Thought this would be cool, and pay homage to that poem I mentioned earlier.
I really like this idea, and chances are I will create another 56 cards for a personal deck - whether I push them through would be decided based on response? Is this a sort of thing that would appeal to you?
-
Yes, I think this would definitely appeal to me, depending on what your drawings look like. Good luck. :D
-
That wouldn't be a bad idea but people would have to see the drawings first.
-
And also, you would need to draw some more, to reach 52 cards, and not 48. Some small tools for magicians would also be appreciated i.e. jokers, gaff card etc.

The Smoke and Mirrors deck is a hand drawn deck. Not all the way through but as far as the back design and Ace of Spades goes, they were all pen and scanned not vectorized. That's why if you look really closely at the Ace of Spades you'll notice pixelation, it's because it's an actual drawing.

Obviously you guys will get to see all the images - in case you didn't know people on this forum rock.
I want the deck to be useful to everyone, tell me some ideas and why you want them and Ill make a note. With a deck like this any card could have reveal for another, etc etc.

It could be really awesome... or it could be really crappy :P
But I'm excited to see it!
-
Hopefully the former ;)
-
Yeah it could turn out really cool or not so great! I think it's worth a shot for sure.
Your idea got me thinking that a "sketched" themed deck would look pretty cool!

I agree here, you would have to take a ton of time to try to perfect your drawing, and if you can make some nice jokers and gaffs im in. :)
-
I'm in, unless I really dislike the quality and the designs of the cards!
-
Thanks for the support guys, this deck is in very early production and may never be produced.

Well, I'm interested enough to have a look at the card designs when they're done. Keep us posted.

Will do :) I am going to take a LONG time and enjoy it :)
