Title: Clipped Wings

Some of you already know that I'm working on a second paper cutting deck this year, which has a bird theme. So far, I've made the first 4 cards.

Anyways, I'm unsure of what I should name the deck. "Flock," "Aves," "Ornithology" "Dodo" are all ideas I've been thinking about, but I was wondering what you guys think. I'm definitely open to other suggestions too.

I've loved al of your designs and I love these too! Its crazy that those are all done by hand! You have a true talent there.

I have a few questions about the Curator deck that I am going to PM you

Stoked about this one! You know how much I loved the first deck  :)  So I don't need to tell you how excited I am for another year of amazing art. I like "Ornithology" the best. I think it's very classy and does justice to the work

I honestly kind of hate you for how talented you are with that. Really amazing stuff, inspiring even.

Don't name your deck Dodo. We all know how that bird turned out. I like to look up words that reference my deck first in the thesaurus, and then run them through google translate to see if a simple word in another language holds some unique aspect of pronunciation of evokes a different feel. Maybe try that.

I love that 4 of spades design, just makes me chuckle seeing something so anti-social and malicious so wonderfully rendered.

I would say 'Flock' is far and away the best of those.  I've got needlessly fancy rhetoric so words never really seem 'classy' to me; I think 'Ornithology' sounds bland and sterile, to be honest.  These are too much fun to be called that.  'Aves'; I get where you're coming from but I would prefer the lengthened 'Aviary' to that.  Actually, the Aviary deck kinda has a ring to it, no?
Dodo's far to specific and those things are an ugly mess.  Good riddance!

You took a theme for a deck that I normally would never like, and turned it into something that I love! Amazing designs so far, I'm excited to see what else you come up with.

Thank you very much, but I have to say that there's a bunch of talent that I don't have though. When I see the things being done with Vortex, Mana, Seasons, Ornate, Tendril, etc., my jaw drops. We're a talented bunch around here though!

I thought about Aviary too, but I think it's too similar to the Aviator brand, don't you think?

I probably won't go with Dodo as the name, but I'm planning on making the dodo as the jokers.

Well, it is a little close but I dunno if that'll really matter.  They're obviously very different products and the actual meanings of the words are so far apart.  I see your point, though.

An aviary and an aviator are two totally different things.  It wouldn't survive the legal sniff test.

How about something to do with wings? Like the Winged deck. Or Flight deck. Or soaring, something along those lines? Just an idea.

I LOVE IT! The Clipped Wing Deck. Or just plainly Clipped Wings. I can see the name of the box being uniquely designed a swell, like maybe the 'W' being made out of wings?

Clipped wings... That's genius. It offers so many possibilities for the box design too!
Otherwise, I fully agree with Kanped, but I also think Aviary and Aviator sound too similar, regardless of the difference in meaning. Nothing to do with legality issues, but if it were me, legal or not, I wouldn't want that to happen. ::)

Paper wings isn't bad actually. I feel like since the first deck had a lot of emphasis on it being a paper-cutting project that this one should focus more on the birds. So I don't really see the need for there being "paper, cutting, transfomation, etc..." in the name. That's just my opinion though.
Title: Re: 2012 Hand-cut Deck
Post by: Don Boyer on January 23, 2012, 02:42:02 AM
The first project doesn't even mention clipping or any kind of similar term in the title - it's called the Curator deck, period.  Only on the card back design does it show scissors.

I still think Clipped Wings is an awesome name, taking a potentially depressing term and giving it a playful twist.  They're literally clipped out of paper - it's PERFECT.  Paper Wings just doesn't have the same oomph behind it, doesn't evoke the same degree of feelings.

That's a great idea - it could be as iconic as the Bicycle logo design (while not quite as famous)!  In fact, imagine two birds, side by side, wings extended in a "V" shape - voila, a "W", and one that's not simply formed out of disembodied wings but out of birds, which is the real focus of the deck.

I was careful with my wording in hopes to avoid there being any confusion... I didn't say emphasis in the name, I know what the first deck was called (and the meaning behind it). I was saying emphasis in the talk and the hype. We know how the project is done and now I think we should look a the birds more. It's just an opinion.

I don't like the name "Clipped Wings" and that's just me. Maybe everybody else will like it and that's cool. I'm really just throwing my two cents out there because hey that's what the forum is for.

Hey, that's cool.  Not every word that pours forth from my keyboard is made of gold, that's for certain!  :))  I could be in the majority, minority, it doesn't really matter - it's not my deck to name.  In the end, the artist chooses.

But no matter how you name/slice it, this really does look like another wicked-cool deck!  I can't wait for the first one to come off the presses and packaging machines!

I like Clipped Wings a lot.  I think Paper Wings could work, too.  Really, I think when people make new products, they worry far too much about the name.  Get something you don't think you'll regret and just run with it, it doesn't matter that much; everybody gets used to it.

Good@Sabacc, Clipped wings does have a nice ring to it, and the "W" idea isn't a bad one at all! I'll consider doing both, so we'll see.

I was thinking about the AoS from your first deck and how it could be put in this deck just as easily as your current one. Just thought that was interesting, I love both!
Can't wait to see what you come up with, your creativity and talent never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks Derek! Yeah, a friend was telling me that I could use the phoenix again for this deck, but the concept has already been burned up (no pun intended). Last year I had a ton of ideas related to birds, which is why decided to make a second deck.

An update on my 2012 bird deck:
- 1 suit is done, 3 more to go!
- I haven't locked down on a name for the deck yet. Don suggested "Clipped Wings," which I'm leaning towards, but "Flock" and "Ornithology" are still running in the back of my mind. If you prefer one of these names (or you have a suggestion on a different name), let me know!

Update on the Curator deck:
- I have 4 shows confirmed for this spring and summer, a 5th one is in the works.
- I'm working on getting life-size prints made to sell at the shows, including a mock uncut sheet.
- I'm working on a tuck box, which I have to admit is a challenge.
- The deck will still be printed, but prepping for the shows is taking priority at this point.

Those spades look fantastic - but I recommend that you put a HUGE watermark into the images you post.  I would hate to see what happened to the Curator deck happen to this one.

I think you know already which title I prefer...  :))

The limited colors are sort of intentional.  His decks - this one and the Curator deck from last year - are made of images hand-cut from black paper and laid on a white background.  The actual card artworks are HUGE.  He makes a single card every week starting from the first week of the year, so by year's end he has a complete deck!

The Curator deck hasn't been produced yet, but he plans to do so once his gallery shows of his art are completed by mid-late summer.

Here's the old topic on the Curator deck:

Now I'm admittedly not familiar with the entire history of decks, but in my opinion these are the finest transformation decks to ever exist. Pure magic, and I love every one of these cards.

When you print them, you will sell them all without issue, guaranteed.

I'm making it official: "Clipped Wings" is the name for my bird deck. Many thanks to Don Boyer (http://www.facebook.com/donboyermagic) for coming up with it as well as the logo suggestion!

Nathan, Life has been so hectic lately. Between job hunting, prepping for the shows, and making art it's been busy to say the least. The first show opens this Friday, May 4th, and I'll probably post photos in the Curator thread shortly thereafter..

Also, I'm going to sound silly for asking this, but how do I change the name of this thread? I'd like to update it with name of the deck.

If anyone lives in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area, I'm having a Clipped Wings art show this May at the Busy Bee restaurant in downtown Raleigh. I would love to hear from you if you live in the area or are visiting in May!

Below are the one-sheet art prints that I'm planning to hang up for the art show. Also, dates are still being worked out for the release of the deck, but it's coming  :)

I don't but don't feel bad, different decks appeal to different people for different reasons.  I appreciate and admire all forms of art, my favorite being Baroque.  And while I don't like much of Picasso's work, I admire that he is a masterful artist.  It's the same with your decks, I can see the artistry and ingenuity of your first deck but I'm just not drawn to it.  The upcoming deck is thematically more appealing to my personal tastes.

That being said, perhaps I was too harsh to say I wasn't fond of the deck.  It would be fairer to say that it is not enough to encourage me to purchase a deck.  I asked my wife, who while my better often has a different vision of art and she says she wants it.  See what you did, now I have to go buy it for her :)

Of course your website says you are out of stock of the curator deck.   :(  Is there another distributor?

First, I fixed your double post.  Instead of two posts one right after the other, just edit the previous one and add the new information - forum etiquette.

Second, there's a sticky topic in the Playing Card Plethora that lists coupon codes for various retailers, including after-market sellers.  There's a good chance one or more of them are selling it - and you can get the discount!

Haha, I'll have to thank your wife :) Don't worry, I know very well how different decks appeal to different people (and I've received very hateful comments about my art). If you owned the deck, I was just curious if there was anything specific about it you weren't fond of. However, I do think you'll be fond of at least one Curator card, the ace of clubs ;)

I haven't been keeping track of which resellers still have the deck, but send me an email at emjose@gmail.com

Indeed! For five years I saw the biohazard symbol everyday at my old job. It was one of the few cards I knew I was going to do when I started cutting the deck..

Yeah, I've read mean and nasty comments about my work online, and I've heard them in person from my art shows (the viewers didn't know I was the artist). That's the nature of art though, and the support trumps the haters any day :D

Don't forget that people will sometimes say very critical things about art in an attempt to impress the listener.  (Especially if they have a date with them.)   heck, I'd hire you in a heartbeat if I thought for one second I could afford you. :)

It looks like you've inspired my sister to try her hand at a larger format, and multiple colors, like you.  She went out and bought the paper a few days ago.  I have no idea what she'll come up with!

Here's some of her recent (Valentine's) stuff:

Nice work! That's awesome that your sister is tackling on new formats and colors. The papers I use are a little thick (especially the white paper), so I suggest to change blades very often. I go through 1 blade a card.

How do you not see what looks like two stags climbing the sides of the frame?

Even with my new glasses I'm not seeing it.  And it's nice to be able to see things more sharply again!  All I'm getting is two trees.

I see a female lion head in the middle between the trees, the eyes are made by the lower branches (I guess eye brows for the upper ones).  Whether intended or not, it's a clear representation that people see wht they want to see.  The work is nice and well done, I envy crafty people.

Hey Everyone,

I don't have a release date yet for the Clipped Wings deck, but I recently set up an art show for the deck at Bridgewater State University (about 25 miles south of Boston, MA).

There are 60 works on display, and they are on the second and third floors of the main campus library.

If anyone lives in the area or in Massachusetts, please come check out the show! These are the actual papercut cards, and the exhibition will be up until January 9, 2014.

I'm also planning to give an artist's talk/tour of the show in November (date TBD), and I would love to meet any forum members who live in the area.

Here's some more information about the show: http://www.bridgew.edu/art/gallery/Jose.htm

Second floor:

In conjuction with the show, the curator of the art department set up a case of modern playing cards.
The decks from left to right are:
Bicycle Silver & White Rider Back (Cartes A Jouer)
Ornate
52 Aces
P22 Type Foundry: Playing Card Deck 2008
Ultimate Deck

Your cards are absolutely stunning. How you approached the design of the deck is pure madness, and I love it! I'm happy to say I've a deck of Curator adorned with your penmanship and I have been looking to give it some playmates. Your deck has so much class I feel I could drop it in my pocket then be invited to the kings ball only to have his daughter offered to me as a wife.

I can't wait for this deck to come out. At least there is not too much of 2013 left...... :)

Curator, which I just got recently, is amazing. Every time I go through it - and I've looked at it way more than any other deck in my (modest) collection- I fall in love with it more. And see more. The images, which you'd think would be kind of miscellaneous, really do hang together somehow astonishingly well. Thank you for this work, it's brought some real pleasure to us card nuts.

Just checked it out on the map - it's a pocket neighborhood inside the larger Washington Heights.  Looks like a decent place to live, but the surrounding neighborhoods were a little dicey back in the day...

I'm going to be out-and-about around the East Village with friends Thursday evening next week, probably do some hanging around in the afternoon before that - was thinking of checking out the local magic shops and trying not to empty my wallet, or maybe seeing a movie...  Just a generally plan-less day of leisure.  Let me know if you want to join me.

I'm new to this forum, so this is the first I've seen of these. Damn, these are cool. I can see the challenge you had with all B+W clubs and spades, and not going just Red+White for Diamonds and Hearts (I think you had to go with black too, good call). I think you struck a great middle ground with the accent red in the images - that cardinal piece just crushes me - too cool. Reminds me a lot of Charles Harper (http://charleyharperartstudio.com) - one my all time favorite artists. Can't wait!

Thanks HandSkillz! There's a Raven in the 5 of Clubs, and a Barn Owl in the 2 of Clubs.

To everyone:
I'm toying around with the idea of having early bird pledges for the Clipped Wings campaign, and I wanted to see what your thoughts are on signed uncut sheets as early bird pledges. Would this be a worthwhile pledge to offer?

Also, does anyone know if any other KS projects had uncut sheets as early bird pledges? Off the top of my head I can't think of any.

I've never had an uncut sheet but I would love to have one. Your early bird uncuts will sell like crazy! If that's what your after then that would be great. To answer your second question, no I haven't seen any campaign with early bird uncut sheets. I've just seen a few affordable ones like the Blue Fontaines at $19 each.

Early birds are usually done with two purposes in mind.

1) Let someone who might not otherwise afford a deck have a shot at getting one cheap, and
2) Boosting your initial site traffic, creating some buzz for your project.

Uncuts as early birds is a bit on the radical side.  A good project usually only has a small number of them available in the first place and they go fast all by themselves, no early bird needed.  It begs the question, "Why make them as an early bird in the first place?"  It's the decks that take a bit longer to get pledged for because the ratio of decks to uncuts is generally in the ballpark of 50:1 up to 100:1.

Hi Don,

I've been thinking about it since no one's done it before (as far as I know).

Also, I think the uncut sheet of a transformation deck would be higher on a desirability scale than other uncut sheets. To this day, I still get inquiries from people on how they can get a Curator uncut. Out of the 20 or so different uncut sheets that HOPC sells, only 3 have sold out, and the Curator uncut sheet was one of them.

To this day, I still get inquiries from people on how they can get a Curator uncut. Out of the 20 or so different uncut sheets that HOPC sells, only 3 have sold out, and the Curator uncut sheet was one of them.

Their popularity is all the more reason why you wouldn't need to run an early bird to get them sold out, fast.  It's not like the demand for these uncuts will be soft, now is it?  :))

Unless you were planning to offer a LOT of uncuts, I'd reserve them for regular sale.

Consider offering people a poster with the image of the uncut on it for the Curator deck.  It's not the same as an uncut, but it's the next best thing and would cost less both for you and the customer.  Win-win, right?

If you wanted to make a special early bird without giving away your best goodies, make a poster of the Clipped Wings uncut as an early bird tier with a deck - it would be a nice extra.  You could make the poster smaller than normal size so it's inexpensive and at the same time cool looking.

I like the poster idea from Don, I would totally get one.  If the early Bird poster offer was sold out I would try to get an uncut sheet of this deck for sure.

Those are all great points mentioned, but I'm a little uncertain about offering prints/posters as EB pledges. The production value of a print/poster can be much higher than an uncut sheet, but I will give it consideration.

So far, I'm thinking of offering two  EB pledges: A) 1 signed deck and B) 1 signed deck + 1 signed uncut sheet.

My intentions are to offer more than the usual amount of uncut sheets than other KS decks.

I'll tell you right now, if you offer those as early bird tiers, your project's going to launch like a ballistic missile in the first day.

With rockets strapped to it.

Signed decks as an EB would be awesome. I personally have never seen that offered before, but KS and I only met a few months ago....sad face

Haha, I don't know how the campaign will do, but I have my fingers crossed that it meets funding. Come to think of it, I don't know if signed decks have been EB pledges before.

They haven't, and neither have uncut sheets.

Recently, I cut out my logo, and I think I'm going to offer custom 3D paper artwork as a higher-end pledge. I'll take the initial of the backer, cut it out, and have it framed and shipped.

Here are some photos of the hardcover Clipped Wings Collector's Art Book that will be a part of the campaign. I just have to do some minor editing, but I'm really happy with how they've turned out. The campaign video will be filmed this coming weekend.

I am excited for this launch. So much talent. And great sounding rewards so far.

Singed decks and uncuts for early birds? I am going to do everything I can to be at this lauch with my finger on the trigger!

Thank you all! I considered offering a softcover book (seem in the third photo), but the size of the photos in it were too small for my tastes.

However, after getting feedback from a few members at UnitedCardists, I decided to also offer a hardcover Curator deck collector's art book as well (same dimensions and layout as the Clipped Wings book).

As long as you also make a compilation art book when all your paper-cutting art decks are completed!  :))

Seriously, it's a great idea - it would serve as a companion not only to the deck but to the showings you have for it in galleries.  In your shoes, I'd consider making a book for each deck before it becomes a deck, in order to sell them at those showings I mentioned.

Speaking of which - do you keep the originals, or do you sell them?

Having the books for art shows is a fantastic idea, Don! I should have done that in the past.

I've kept all the originals so far.

There's nothing stopping you (aside from cost!) from having the books ready for future showings.

Hang on to those originals - but consider making some prints available.  Either pick a handful of the most popular, or make them on demand based on the buyer's choice of card.  Those would also make a great art show "souvenir" in addition to something for the deck's KS campaign.  1:1 scale prints would be terrifically cool, I think.

No reason on Earth they couldn't be part of any showings you have for the originals, right?  Just thinking it would be a good way to make cash.

They certainly can, it's just that most of the places I've shown at in the past were cafes or restaurants. It wasn't possible to leave a supply of prints without risking some kind of damage from the environment. However, it would be appropriate to have an art show or opening for the Delicious deck in a restaurant..

Actually, it's easier than you think.  Instead of pre-printing, set them up as print-on-demand.  Attach a QR code to each piece that, when scanned with a smartphone, takes the art lover to the ordering page for that particular print.  Using small submission cards to record orders also works, though not as efficiently.  So does handing out cards with the URL for the ordering site.  But the best response is with QR codes - quick, easy, instant gratification, and the vast majority of cellphones in use today are smartphones, or at least equipped with a camera of adequate resolution.
