I thought I would share an exciting new find for my collection that I cannot recall ever having seen before. It is seldom encountered occurrences like this that add adrenaline to the bloodstream and keep the thrill of the hunt going. The item in question is an antique reverse painted glass paperweight that advertises three Andrew Dougherty playing card brands - Indicators No. 50, Tally-Ho No. 9 and Climax No. 14. Given that the Indicators brand occupies the center space, I would guess that at the time this paperweight was produced, it was Dougherty's best-selling brand. According to the AD15a listing in the Dawson/Hochman encyclopedia, the brand number "50" was added at the bottom of the Ace of Spades c1896, therefore, because this brand number is included as part of the advertising displayed in this paperweight, I would estimate that it dates from some time shortly thereafter and possibly into the early part of the first decade of the 20th century. The diameter of this piece is 3 inches, and the height of the domed glass is 1 1/2 inches. There is some light wear to the paint and there is a small chip at the base but overall, this wonderful piece of early playing card advertising still displays quite well.
