Title: 3 New D&D Releases
Post by: Lushbob on January 04, 2012, 03:09:32 PM
Hey, guys. I just read this on Dan and Dave's facebook wall: "Visit us this Friday as we announce the GRAND PRIZE winner for our Holiday Contest and officially kick off 2012 with 3 amazing new products."
I've posted it up here because I'm guessing that at least one of these releases will be a deck of cards. I'm not sure, though. I mean, they did just release Tungstene, Jerry's Nugget and Arrco decks. Admittedly, none of these were actually their own decks, so maybe that means that this release will be a release from Dan and Dave themselves?
Either way, I'm pretty sure at least one of them will be a deck of cards. What do you guys think the deck will be?

Maybe its the deck that they used in the Ferris Wheel tutorial!

I hope they aren't releasing another deck. This would be the 5rd in 3 months.

Couldn't they wait at least another month after the Tungstene -_-

the only thing I want from them us the vintage variety box. other than that they haven't had a decent card product since SMv6. they should stick to what they do well: magic & cardistry

I'm afraid that another deck is the likeliest of one of the three.  Maybe even more than one.  But here's my guess.

They've been carrying T11 stock a lot more often lately.  I predict they'll carry the Steam Punk, Charity: Water and whatever new deck they used in that video with the plaid pattern that's the same as on one of the raffle ticket designs.

I agree with all of what you said there! The Vintage Variety Box is the only thing that I really want. And that doesn't even have any of their own stuff in it, I don't think.

Yeah, I think it's likely that they'll release that plaid pattern deck. That's the deck that leapt to mind immediately when I read that post, that's for sure.

I further predict that the "plaid deck" - believed to be called the U.S. Regulation deck - will come in at least two color patterns.

That is a rumor. It could happen though. I'm sure one of these will be a deck but I'm not going to get it. Firstly I'll be out of town and secondly I honestly am done with a release every couple weeks. If I really want it later down the road I'll get it from a reseller.

I'd be guessing its a T11 deck and possibly the plaid deck and then a flourish or something

I believe you may be right. If you look at the link i posted it bring you to an image with what looks like 2 back designs, one we already saw in the ferris video, now what about the other one  ;D.

Very nice find! I have the magazine but i never noticed it.

I really hope they aren't releasing that plaid deck for a little while. They've "released" enough decks for a while.

I really love the plaid deck's back, though. If they do release it, I just hope it won't be too limited/go too fast, cause I'm a little tight on money right now. They would be awesome for gambling demos, being a very regular full-bleed design.

The last word I heard on it was no, the Smoke and Mirrors line ended with V6.

That was an AWESOME find.  It shows the deck box in two colors, cream and green, so yes, two colors (at least) for this deck, and it still has the same front look to it, so they appear to be called "U.S. Regulation Playing Cards".

I really hope they aren't releasing that plaid deck for a little while. They've "released" enough decks for a while.

First, since V6, D&D hasn't had a single deck sellout of their own design.  This despite rumors that Fantastique was printed in more limited numbers than the quickly-sold-out S&M v6.  I wouldn't worry about this one selling out quickly - though I'll probably order mine first day anyway!

Second, did it slip people's minds that the picture of the two decks was INSIDE a BOOK?  It looks like we're looking at possibly TWO book releases and the new deck: "Reflections" by Guimaraes and a new book by D&D.  I have a sneaking suspicion that the D&D book might be a "vanity book" about themselves and their company, since that two-page spread shows the two new decks (you can even see the second deck's back if you look hard enough; it's NOT plaid), a joker with a buck on it, and someone manipulating a pack of what looks like whichever of the S&M decks v1-3 was the black one.
Title: Re: 3 New D&D Releases
Post by: dmbaggs on January 05, 2012, 06:34:47 AM
I would actually be interested in a "vanity" book. I have enjoyed reading the blog entries they have had and I think that if the book had a similar style I would really enjoy it.
Title: Re: 3 New D&D Releases
Post by: Don Boyer on January 05, 2012, 07:00:15 AM
I would be interested if it was more than simply a vanity book - if it actually contained some instruction in magic/cardistry in it.  And also if it didn't break the bank; coffee table books like that tend to be expensive.

Title: Re: 3 New D&D Releases
Post by: moonexe on January 05, 2012, 03:03:37 PM
I googled the guy, he seems like a pretty interesting person. :)
Anyway, even with the lack of money, I'd still be happy to see that plaid deck come out. We don't have any decks of that kind in modern releases, only vintage decks, so it'd definitely be a really nice piece to own. As for the other color there actually seems to have three designs on there that could be neither ad cards nor jokers. Not saying there's gonna be 3 backs, one of them could just be thrown in there for the picture, but we have no sure way of knowing which one. ::)
Oh well, we'll see tomorrow.

Loldude is correct. Smoke and Mirrors V6 was the last colored deck in the S&M series. So that leaves 2 possible colors.... black and white.

I think they will print the v7, judging from the strategy on how they make money. There is no reason not to print them since they already have the back design.

That would be nonsense. First off, D&D's S&M release shouldn't be until' another month or so, but it's great if they decide to release it early. Our wallets are tired, and now isn't really the time to be releasing another deck. Plus, if they were releasing the v7's they would have put up a lot more hints rather than just one post on Twitter. I mean pictures, descriptions, anything. If they were to release the v7's, it would be way out of their regimen.

So, this time is unlikely to be a new deck in my opinion.
And they should really give us a break.

There wasn't much hype today, but still, there's images of this new US Regulation deck lying around all over the place.  In the photo, on the backs of their raffle tickets, etc.

I'm guessing they'll introduce the new products after the hold the drawing for the grand prize of the holiday contest.

They did the same amount of hyping as they did for the Fantastique. However, the Tungstene is not their product, and it's not a "new release" from them in any way. They didn't hype Arrcos, Sentinels or Monarchs either.

I doubt the twins are in any financial position to print an unlimited run (AKA they do multiple runs of at least 10k decks). I'm sure this one is just as limited as the Fantastique and Fulton's but I think they know better than to market something as "super rare" now. It's a death sentence if you claim something is very limited, and it stays in stock for weeks/months.

Kudos to them for not milking their customers in shady ways this time around. :)

Well, theory 11 markets every one of their decks as "limited" so D&D should at least put that on there if it's not an unlimited run. Even with that said, however, I doubt that this is an unlimited run as well. I don't think it's because of their financial instability, but rather the fact that unlimited runs just don't seem to be their style

This is D&D's first attempt at a borderless card, right?  Sure, I love everything with a border, but there are times when a borderless is right for the design - this is one of them.  They were looking for a vintage style, and these types of card backs are indeed vintage.  I personally think they're pretty cool.  Bicycle released similar patterns over the years - just not recently.  (In fact, I don't think even in my lifetime!)  Fans done with a borderless design have a quality like an optical illusion, and these decks appear to not be exceptions.
Title: Re: 3 New D&D Releases
Post by: moonexe on January 07, 2012, 05:39:56 AM
Something just hit me: You guys complain about borderless designs because they restrict your magic arsenal. But when it comes to choosing a deck for a performance, what do you pick? Standard bikes. If you're not gonna use your custom decks for magic, then why does it even matter that they have no border? :-\

And I agree with Sabacc here, the theme of the deck goes best with a borderless design, and that's the reason for it. It's a vintage design, inspired by vintage decks that did NOT have borders. Why should this one have one?
Title: Re: 3 New D&D Releases
Post by: Don Boyer on January 07, 2012, 05:48:06 AM
It's kind of a moot point, now - they're already made.  Nobody had to ask our permission to make them!

D&D are cardists more than magicians, and this is a cardist's deck.  In fans, it's just eye-catching.  I'm sure it's just as eye-catching during other cardistry moves.

I use custom decks all the time for performing.  In fact, sad as it sounds, most of the time, I only incorporate a pack of Bikes in my act when it's a gaffed deck!  The one deck that people are supposed to trust, and it's the one they really should look out for!

Wow, I haven't been on for about a day and I missed all of this!  ;D
In my opinion, these look like really nice decks. Looks like we were spot on with our guessing, and with the previous thread about the US Regulation Playing Cards. I agree with what many have said before me; this design wouldn't suit a border, so I'm glad that they're borderless. I like the tuck box, and the way it looks like it has a leather texture to it (I'm guessing that it's not actually leather, and just printed to look like leather, but I can't see perfectly from the pictures. I highly doubt they'd have a leather tuckbox anyway).
If I had the money, I'd probably buy a brick of each. Or possibly a mixed brick, with 6 of each. I prefer the 'Arizona Red' deck over the 'California Blue' deck, but I quite like both of them. And the custom brick box is something I'd definitely like to get.

Boy, I'm of two minds about these. On the one hand, they hit their design brief well, they look nicely vintage and give off the right vibes. They are classy and nice looking, for sure.

On the other hand, it is disheartening to me that D&D will easily sell thousands and thousands of these decks, as uninspired as they are. I'm pretty sure I have that plaid pattern in photoshop, and with standard faces and indexes there is really not a single thing new or interesting here. It's tough when people like Alex, or myself, put in months and months of work, trying new ideas and things people have never seen before and will struggle mightily to even get the chance to make our projects real, when the big names can do basically anything at all and sell out every time.

I'm probably just jealous, but if they tried at least one new idea, or did something slightly more than ordinary I wouldn't be so down on them.

Well, I don't think the pattern is from Photoshop - I've seen the Arizona plaid on the back of a vintage deck of Bikes.  If it's not identical, it's damn close.  I'd wager the same may be true of the California blue color.  The decks were well thought out - they're imagining the kind of deck you'd find in Dad's (or Granddad's) cabin in the woods by the lake, the one he pulls out after a long day of fishing and the evening meal for card games and a little bourbon with his buddies.  To me, this really does invoke that feel.

I think the issue is that you're working on idea that are out of the box, different, very unique.  Vintage, however, is based on the old, on what previously exists or existed.  While it does take some careful thought to make a good vintage deck while still giving it unique characteristics, I'm thinking your project is more ambitious and difficult, since you're more about reinventing deck design and they're closer to imitating deck design.

I like the tuck box, and the way it looks like it has a leather texture to it (I'm guessing that it's not actually leather, and just printed to look like leather, but I can't see perfectly from the pictures. I highly doubt they'd have a leather tuckbox anyway).
The description clearly says "leatherette", which is imitation leather, but on the pictures it just seems like texture cardboard to me. Oh well, I'll see when I get them.

Leatherette is a vague description.  It can look like a leather jacket, same texture, same softness, same drape (or only some of the listed attributes), but paperboard textured to look and feel like leather could also be called leatherette.

Yeah, that's what I thought; it could be a number of different things. But when you look at the back of the box, it looks like smooth cardboard, like any regular set of Bikes. I thought it's unlikely that they would make the tuckbox front a different texture to the back of it. But who knows? I guess we'll find out when someone here gets their decks.

Yeah, I know they were going for that look, and they did do it well. It takes some thought to initially concept something well, but I guess I'm bummed that beyond concept, it takes them so little effort to construct, compared to something with some special features. Yes, in this case they are evoking the past so they lock themselves into the "standard" but I personally still find it lazy.

As an example, this sample was literally about 35 seconds. 10 or which was googling for "plaid photoshop pattern." Maybe if I spent an hour I could go through about 800 patterns and find the one that "spoke to me" as properly vintage.

The big card makers these days are just putting out SO many decks. They know people will buy them up regardless, so they just aren't trying to hard. I think that Ellusionist is by far the one trying new things, but D&D and Theory11 are just cruising and flooding the market with got-to-have normalcy, making it tougher for folks that want to try new things.

All that said, that collector-y part of my mind still wants the damn things...

I totally agree with you xmetal. D&D have had sooo many deck releases in such a short period of time. And some of them are nicely designed... but some of them are lazy. T11 has been lazy too with having standard faces on their decks which gets annoying. And Ellusionist is still making awesome fully custom, innovative decks.

Xmetal, I don't think it's necessarily a "lazy" thing. Sure, if you or me designed the same deck, people would likely overlook it, but it doesn't mean a simple design doesn't have a place in the market. It's not just a lazy design, it's a design that because of its simple nature needs a big company behind it to be successful. They are, in a way, the only ones who can make such a design possible, as you and I couldn't print it even if we really wanted to.
(I'm not saying they're not doing it for money. But the deck is still a very nice one that is, in my opinion, worth printing regardless.)

Now, nobody ever says anything about official USPCC decks, yet in terms of originality they could be considered worse than even Merz decks... How many decks have they released that were PURELY recolorations in every single aspect? ::)

Yeah I don't see it as lazy because I see it as a deck designed more for cardists instead of magicians. These cards would look awesome for card manipulation which the Buck Twins specialize in.

I can see how it can be annoying when putting in so much time and they can put this out and "BAM!" they sell them all.

I really hope they sell uncut sheets of this deck because the fronts of the cards are awesome and would look really nice if they were framed!

Um, every single face is standard except for the jokers and two extra cards... :-\

EDIT: Nevermind, the court cards are slightly recolored. But that's pretty damn close to standard.

Not exactly true. The cards are actually off-white and the court cards are recolored and I like the colors that they used.

Most of the color variants weren't actually USPC's work, but were instead contracted jobs from other companies.  BMPokerWorld commissioned the brown Rider Back deck, maroon/burgundy and yellow were commissioned by the Bond Agency, and green, orange, gold, silver, turquoise and fuschia were made for Vincenzo DiFatta (who also made the rainbow Rider Back).

USPC only made red, blue and black, with black being the more scarce and also the only color of their own choosing not yet released in a printing from Erlanger or a "Standard" box - they're still selling Cincinnati-made decks only.

You can call it a lack of originality, but remember these decks were so early in the custom deck craze, just color variants were considered pretty out-there.  Think of it like this: a rockabilly song written today doesn't sound terribly original, since the format's been around a number of decades, but if it was the early 1950s, it would be truly original.  The Ramones were considered great because of the utter simplicity of their music, which was unique for its time - any band trying to replicate that today without being called dated Ramones clones would fail miserably.

Man's gotta walk before he can run, crawl before he can walk.  Sentinels and Infinity wouldn't have been possible without decks like those leading the way in the beginning.  The earliest Ellusionist decks were straight-up variations of the basic Rider Back, a trend that continued up to Arcane, which is only what, a little more than a year old?  Now, I don't think they'd ever go back to Rider variants - been there, done that, bought the brick box.  But before Arcane, Infinity, Artifice and LTD could come to be, those Rider Back-based models had to come before.

Is there anything you don't know? ::) There's always something to learn in every post you make... Nice to have you here.

Anyway. I don't doubt the quality of rider backs, and sure the first Ellusionist decks were innovative for their time. Did they come up with the whole black deck thing? (In recent times that is. I remember seeing a couple VERY old black decks, likely pre-USPC.)
Looking back on my post, I should specify that I wasn't trying to make a point out of the USPC thing, just throwing that out there.

What I was saying about D&D still stands. Their deck is hardly a very original(though that could be argued) or elaborate one, but I still think it has its place and deserves to be printed. People have been talking about it and wanting to get it even before they knew it was D&D's product. It appeals to people, and that's all we really need in a custom deck.

And I'm not saying this to defend the Bucks. I know what it's like, too, being in the design process myself. If I wanted, I could take standard USPC faces, make them purple and gold, and call my deck done. There's two reasons why I don't. The first is that it wouldn't have the same amount of success, obviously. But the second reason is that I don't WANT to. I want to release something I'll be proud of. I'm not in it for the money, or even the fame, I just want my own cards printed and I want them to be great. ;)
I think I'm gonna have nightmares about court cards when I'm done.

Well, now you're makin' me blush...   ;D

I get my information from the same place you guys do - the interwebs!  Check out the Playing Card Wiki sometime - it's where I got the skinny on the colored Bikes.

Making a deck based on classic design elements is also known as "playing it safe".  Using the familiar, tweaking it just right and calling it a classic design does take some skill, but it's made of elements already known to the buyer, meant to evoke a certain feeling of nostalgia, of wistfulness for a time gone by.

It's easy to lean on what came before you, harder to do it with style, and much harder to blaze your own trail with no guarantee of success.  Yours is a new deck, yes, but even you are borrowing from the past by basing your deck on the familiar trappings of Lewis Carroll's "Alice" book duology.  Something like a Sentinels or an Infinity or an Artifice is taking even more risk, but again, there's familiar elements to them all.  Sentinels tap into the symbology of a few world cultures, Artifice invokes old poker backrooms and illegal/crooked gambling, and Infinity...well, that's a whole 'nother ball game!

Just putting that out there as food for thought.  Eat up, plenty more where that came from.
