Playing Card Plethora / Re: Artifice and Arcane deck list question
« on: June 13, 2016, 08:17:51 PM »
Assuming you don't care about including the gaff or mini decks you have what P52 has for both of them, with Blue showing 2 versions there and Ellusionist listing purple and emerald as also having v2 which added a border on the back.

Thank you very much for this Lee!  A great concise guide to get started.

Apologies, I neglected to mention this when I picked this up a month ago, but by waiting you get a chance to get them on sale!

2 for $20 one day dysfunctional deck sale! www.deviantmoon.com/wordpress

He also has an ebay store you should take a look at, especially if you are reading this well after I post.  Note there is also an uncut sheet available.  Just 500 were printed and yes he has confirmed he's considering doing a full deck of the transformation cards (just 28 were created, unknown how many copies of each, where 2 random ones given out with the decks).  Apparently he is also working on a number of additional decks as well.  The Portfolio 52 entry.

Lastly, they also have a tarot deck in a similar style  This is also available cheaper in unsigned form on Amazon if you can sort through the options.  You'll also note there is also the original version available at US Game Systems and Amazon

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: What Deck Brand is This?
« on: April 22, 2016, 03:34:14 PM »
It's hard to make out any details in the screenshot, but considering there is low lighting, poor resolution/focus, etc it's possible these are the ones.  Certainly a generic non-brand, but a style that would have been popular in the 70s/80s.  https://www.etsy.com/listing/206360318/vintage-1970s-playing-cards-white-and

It feels like the white is too prominent on these cards compared to the screenshot, but hard to say given the angle and lighting.  Certainly similar anyhow.  It does appear the cards in the screenshot could be a 6 pointed start with elements between the points, much like this deck.

No idea  ;)  I tried some image and general searching just for fun and came across either your posting or where you got the question from.  It's interesting enough to share here as well.

As for getting your question answered you came to the right place, but perhaps the mods will move your post here instead http://www.playingcardforum.com/index.php?topic=6081.0

My guess is your hunch is correct that's it's just some off brand and the world will never know, but we'll see...

Design & Development / Re: Binary/Circuit deck - In development
« on: April 12, 2016, 10:42:33 AM »
As I mentioned elsewhere, I do love this idea of using a PCB, but your original style had legs as well.  I suggest doing a v1 and v2 and use both designs.

Just a reminder PCBs do not have to be green, although that is tradition (due to material natural color, military spec, easier for human eyes for soldering, etc).  A black background with gold traces/circuits or white with silver would still be realistic, but also more modern and make the cards easier to read. Making the pips on number cards be actual PCB components (processors, etc) that are on the actual board and interconnected and then the indicies can simply be what is printed on the board for identification.  If you want to stick with green I would suggest going closer to a traditional PCB board color (more saturated/contrast) and then also use gold/silver for the circuits which will make it easier to read and also resemble a traditional board more.

Then again, it doesn't have to be totally realistic, it can be heavily circuit inspired and have the strong feel of a PCB, but use other colors and even white traces to make it look like light/electricity moving through them.

Perhaps you could get by with some replicas

1864 is pretty close and probably has the look you want, complete with square corners.

1876 is a little closer, but used a more unique marking system with 4 indicies so probably not what you want.

1883 is pretty darn close, but you are most likely wanting a traditional deck and not this transformation style

Also, while they don't have cards in the period you are looking for this site may be useful for other props/projects - http://historicgames.com/

RandCo's list is certainly more direct, but just a reminder that Portfolio52 has decks grouped by Artist and (Production/Creation)Company, plus brand and manufacturer.  Each with a URL entry at the bottom (bug prevents it from being clickable) when displaying all decks under that group.

EDIT - Original post had stutters every 10 sec or so, this one corrects that

It's a nice deck. I'm curious why they chose to sell these via preorder. Wouldn't it make more sense to sell and ship them on Black Friday? That way they'd be to customers for the whole of the holiday season and you could get an extra marketing push from customers posting photos and videos online. Also, why was there a preorder anyways? Why not just sell them like Penguin does with most of their products? I didn't see an explanation on their webpage.

It comes down to timing and not wanting to wait until 2016.  Natalia was planning on printing these herself using MPC to get out just in time for Christmas, but Penguin came along and bought the rights to them and wanted to go with USPCC.  To get that done they basically put the order in for the deck right away, which meant doing a direct sale AFTER only gives about a week of sales before people quit caring which would leave them with a ton of seasonal merchandise.  Waiting until 2016 I suppose could be an option, but I'm glad they went with USPCC and made available now, even as a pre-order.

I agree they would have been wise to start pre-orders on Black Friday though, not sure why they waited.  Obviously it would have been impossible with the timing to actually sell the decks direct at that time though.

Certainly Reylek can correct me if needed.

ALSO, Natalia has 3 uncuts of this deck available if anybody is interested - http://nataliasilva.net/russian-folk-art-playing-cards/christmas-uncut-sheet

Going to duplicate my comments from elsewhere just to further the discussion here.

Fantabulus!!! Any chance you can do it sooner than that? I'm really anstsy to get my hands on this one!  :bosswalk:

The 6oH I maybe don't get, but the grey triangles are distracting and I just don't see what is going on there. Are they shining flashlights or something?  If so, perhaps you can try it with a white background and slightly yellow beams shining from them instead?  I think that would be more obvious and less distracting.

The 6oS and 7oS are pretty neat, but the pipmen aren't really interacting WITH the pips, instead they are just kind of there. Especially the 6oS which is a bit of an anomaly with the dark background, I wonder if you could make it work some other way or find a different scenario there.. The colors on the 7oS are pretty sweet though and there is some interaction with the birds so it's still good, just not as awesome as some of the others.

I'm pretty sure we've seen the 7oC before, which is quite good. The 6oC makes me smile and the 7oH is brilliant!

I wasn't expecting the best deck ever so mostly I'm satisfied with it.  The theme and anarchy style twist is interesting and some of the artwork and design is pretty good.  Some ideas and execution are lacking though.  I think the worst is the decision to use red backgrounds in places and the pips, they almost look like a child cut them out of construction paper and were glued on, just not a good edge line and fit.  Another problem is some fonts like those on ad card (designed like AoS) were clearly raster graphics instead of vector and are blurred out in final copy, where the very lowest line isn't even readable.  The actual AoS is OK though so not a huge deal, but still it definitely wasn't an expert in digital editing that did this when closely analyzed.  I'm sure he learned a lot though and future ones will be better.

It's still an interesting deck and in my opinion the music that was included is pretty good, so there's that too.

Why not charge each backer what it ACTUALLY costs to get from fulfillment to their location?  Using a flat rate either means you run the risk of getting screwed or you have to charge such a high fee based on worst case that you don't get any backers.

Yeah, $18-$19 USD shipped is way too much for most decks (exception for highest art and lots of foil, embossing, low print run, quality printer, etc).  This is dead on arrival.  Another MAJOR problem is this - "Free Shipping Worldwide".  That will KILL your profits and possibly mean you will lose money.  Do some research on what shipping is to every country in the world, some can be 3-5x what others are.

I would suggest looking into using USPCC and using a fulfillment service or better yet using an AP based printer (can't remember if it was EPCC or LPCC) that offers both printing and direct from factory fulfillment.

As for the art itself, perhaps at the right price and quality, but until then...  Also, although different enough, this reminds me a lot of Animal Kingdom which I already have so not as interested as I would have been otherwise.

You know my opinion - the simple pattern is better.  You're trying to shoehorn the Rider Back design into your concept with the complex back and it's a poor fit.

Perhaps, but it is FAR more interesting and ACTIVE than the plain back.  Perhaps a compromise and moving away from Rider back look would work, but I have nothing against showing some similar styles to the big boy on the block.

Maybe the Christmas deck by Natilia will be a nice alternative, really looking at those now :)

Who is Natilia?  A Google search for Christmas deck Natilia produces no useful results.

Natalia Silva, Russian Folk Art deck, is doing a christmas deck soon.

Launching in the next few days on KS, probably MPC printer though.

Based on some past posts here and elsewhere, I would say brushing up on proper Google-Fu is well worth the time and effort.  So many times I hear somebody asking for information and that they searched and found nothing, but with a few properly formed search queries or using a reverse image search I can usually find some information.  Taking those findings and then revising the query can often find even more results.  From there it can lead into some favorite websites and books.

http://www.plainbacks.com/

While I'm sure most of you know and use Collector's Weekly, it's one of those sites that helps me so much I almost hesitate to let others in on it.    ;D

For books the "Hochman Price Guide and Encyclopedia" are very valuable and a bargain in ePub format, and as a transformation card collector Fields' "Transformation Playing Cards" has been a huge help as well.

Nice art, for sure, but again not sending outside the US. I see you are asking for interest outside the US, but it's difficult to get a clear sample of that population either here or in UC. True there's people from Australia, UK and Asia, but the vast majority are from the US.
So it's a shame when a project says "shipping only to the US", but you probably knew that before. I can see the logic in previous projects with copyrights difficulties, but in this one, I fail to understand the reason, other than convenience, which I can't argue against besides saying that you are missing a part of this community.

Wow a mature response for once regarding this issue, respect.  This is well worded and I think offers some caution on ignoring international.  I think you are correct in the assumption they are doing this out of convenience and also avoiding the rage of those who will complain about international shipping costs if they do include it.  As you may know, they have been very up front with some of their early projects and costs.  http://albinodragon.com/blog/dragon-crate-kickstarter-analysis/
Quote
An interesting metric here is that even though international shipping only accounts for 25% of the backers, it was about 50% of the total shipping costs.

Keep this in mind when offering shipping worldwide.

Also don't forget how much more time intensive shipping international packages can be. You'll ultimately have a lot of data processing to do trying to correct international addresses as well as filling out accurate customs forms.

Based on this, I would have to believe they found it either too much of a pain or they would have to charge so much for international shipping to account for cost and time, not to mention the previous problems with fraud due to lack of ability to fully track in some countries.  Either that or they would have to partially account for this in the cost of the deck itself and raise the cost for everybody.  However, at the current price of $15/deck it seems they should be able to handle it.  That said, not sure who will buy many if at all at that price.

My impression and assumption is that international buyers have increased lately and they may end up with more than 25% which Don also seems to agree with, especially in AP.  It should be possible to also lower the price of the deck overall to increase the appeal, but then also charge appropriately for international shipping without the cost being too high for you all. jsantafe has a good point here.  From my perspective the price HAS to come done to a reasonable one considering what this deck is (not licensed and not embellished with embossing, foil, inner printing, etc), but you should also consider including international to make it a success, even if that means charging a little more for shipping to those that want it and dealing with the 'not fair' crowd.

Here's the new image stitch so far

We're either missing a lot or we're looking at more than one photo.

Looks like a side-corner-side shot and a separate face or back tuck shot to me.  Not sure what to make of the most recent additional photo segment though.

This is getting dragged out too long I think, a slow segmented tease of what will end up being just tease photos.  Excitement and anticipation turn to annoyance and eventual disappointment the greater and longer the pre-hype....
