Sparkz, can you also send to me?

Better yet, maybe we can start a shared google doc and allow multiple people to edit to make it a community source that you can then import/reference in your own private sheet.  With your permission I'm willing to take the lead on that if you don't have the time and could maybe insert some controls, automation and process around it.

This has/had a lot of potential, but is still pretty much in beta and on/off development.  http://playingcarddb.com/

I have a very different idea of "Insanely Awesome Decks " I guess.

Agree, I saw this list when I first got into collecting and found just a few, even now that I'm expanding more than I thought I can say I only have 6 on this list and will NEVER want more than 10 of them.  Meh and meh for the most part.

I'm a sucker for art deco design, so I pledged for a Gold and the Empire LE.  It could be better or more ornate, but I'll take what I can get these days!  I'm not fully sold on the court art style, but there's enough elsewhere that I'm in for a couple.  Not sure 'horrible' is justified, they are good enough, although in most cases I don't think it's enough to justify the dollars for a simple tuck swap and coin.

Nice!  Finally jumped into this deck recently as I missed the initial run.  Glad to see I might get in at that ground floor with the next set.  Tease photos...

I too looked at those empty tucks from MPC, but here in the midwest we have a hardware chain 'Menards' which at least in my local store sells them repackaged with new tucks for just $1.  I bought a few since for that price I just re-used the tuck for some in my collection case that don't have any and then wrapped a rubber band around the deck and tossed in the RV camper.  I figured for that price I may as well get a few more just to keep in the collection.  These are the rounded corner style and the tuck front is just a solid color with a cut out, the sides just say "Casino Played Cards" and "Las Vegas Style".  When in the case only the front shows so they are perfect for that.  Maybe look around for them in unusual places for them, but yeah the MPC is likely best option for plain tucks.  The shipping though.

NOTE - Ignore the STDM deck, that was from a different source

Really hoping this one makes the goal, it's the top notch whimsy deck and I usually hate whimsy!

Super cool, looking forward to it.  Hopefully you will have details on what courts will look like and some teasers soon?  <nudge>

Yes, it's a banner, not chin rest. Because as you said the classical composer of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic period don't use a chin rest.

Cool.  I would still consider removing it, especially if it doesn't say anything, or making it a side by side banner like the courts.  The way it is now it doesn't provide a mirroring point anyhow since it is above the center line, doesn't add anything since no lettering.  I like the rest though, looking forward to see where you take this.

Wow Ade, that's a great deck, I wonder if the number cards can be customized further without ruining the integrity. Perhaps the pips can be a bit more musical, or some sheet music background? But well done and Congratulations on completing the deck I know a few musical people who would really like this.

Thank you all;)

@Rose : I want the number cards looks clean, so I decided only customized the pips layout without a background and keep the pips simple  :D

I was actually going to say the same thing about shadowed sheet music in the background.  I just really feel sad for the number cards that look ordinary compared to the custom courts.  I do like the font and especially club style though, fits well with the theme.

I can't tell what the white things on the bottom of the mirrored violins are, but they kind of look like a banner?  Whatever it is, I would remove it since it looks odd and makes them look cut off.  If it or any other part is meant to be a chin rest I would remove it since it also distracts and chin rests are a recent invention and would not have been likely in use when most of these composers were alive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinrest

In looking for a large display for my diecast car collection I found this which is very similar to the DIY card case described on page 1 of this thread of which I also built 2.  Anyhow, If you don't mind one that only holds 25 instead of 30 and don't want to deal with DIY it's a good option.  Dimensions look right anyhow to make this work great.

$65 shipped to USA, other colors available.

I also see Amazon is a reseller so you can get the oak look for just $53 shipped to USA

Just realized I've been neglecting this thread.  Rather than post everything I picked up in the last 2-3 months, here's the more interesting ones.

Design & Development / Re: How I promote my new Deck?

Well there are ideas and ideas that work, which usually go along with a METHOD that works.  I'll throw some ideas out there, but perhaps people that have run past campaigns will give specific answers.  Don't we already have an existing thread for this anyhow?

EDIT - Yes we do, but I'm sure this came up before in other threads more recently too
http://www.playingcardforum.com/design-development/discussion-for-kickstarter-projects-costs-marketing-good-rewards-and-more/

  • There are a TON of how to market Kickstarter project websites out there, books, videos, etc.  I think I even saw some from card decks before, certainly board games.  Search those out.
  • Pintrest (Twitter, Instagram, etc), but like Facebook the masses have to already be there or you have to have a 'viral' product and/or marketing message.
  • Reddit playing card subreddits, but not that active.
  • Board Game Geek forums, but they are VERY strict about where you can post 'ads' and not much cross over other than general card players who may be interested
  • Forums, but I believe asking for input and showing progress is better than just spamming.  Glad to see you already realize that though.

I gotta say this has come a long way in short order.  It's very professional of you to receive the input and filter it for changes while remaining unemotional.  Glad you reached out and listened.  I really hope you make your goal, but believe if not this time it will be on a relaunch.  LOTS of time left though, I think you'll be just fine!   :D

The $15 for the 'Unlimited' deck (I really would prefer standard or just let Limited stand on it's own BTW) is a bit higher than other unbranded decks out there, but a few extra bucks for licensing and even premium margin is reasonable.  The Limited deck packages (can't just get the deck) of around $25 is too much for me given I have other more expensive hobbies.  I don't see that $10 premium being worth it for the special tuck and Bicycle name, especially if it means you HAVE to buy something else to get it.  $5 more, then maybe.  Then again, I don't typically collect multiples of the same deck, not even different versions, so I'm not the primary target and would not likely get both anyhow.  I would have considered buying JUST the Limited at something over $15, perhaps up to $20.

Still though, it's not about being 'fair' it's about selling at a price the market will bear.  With a limited deck of only 500 I think you'll sell out eventually and certainly if not during the campaign then shortly after when some show up and actually sell on ebay for 2x.

Good luck!  I'm already in for that standard deck...I mean 'Unlimited'!   ;)

My joker uncut just arrived, here's an image of the full sheet for your inspection.  Working today though, so no time for a proper layout and lighting.  Should be enough to see what is going on though.

Design & Development / Re: The Frontier Deck
« on: May 08, 2014, 09:59:54 AM »
I'm in for a deck, great artwork and I like the style and theme. The only suggestion I have is to do something with the snakes.  I'm not a snake fan, but understand they serve a purpose in the history and thus likely belong in this deck.  Beyond that though, the snakes don't look polished enough.  That may have to do with the nature of their appearance and the detail can only be in the scales, but they don't look like they were cleaned up enough digitally.  At first glance they look like somebody just did a sketch, scanned it in and slapped it on the card.  Obviously you did do work on it, but they just don't 'pop'.  Perhaps experiment with sharpening or darkening slightly, maybe adding some background detail?  In looking at them closer I think the eyes and nose need to be brought out more to bring out those features more so they look as professional as the other animals.

So the suits are large mammals, small mammals, birds and snakes?  That's pretty cool and I really like the footprints on the tuck, but a bit disappointed that theme didn't carry over to the cards.  It would be neat to replace them as suits, but that would impact play-ability and would not be received well.  I would like to see them incorporated if possible, perhaps as a crest/shield on the cards instead of the uniformly used antlers or elsewhere.

Overall I still really like it though, nice work so far.

From what I can tell, the deck has 26 jokers, each repeated twice.

Somebody at UC said they contacted USPCC and they responded that it is 26 jokers which matches what the images appear to show and your analysis.  I'm keeping my order since it is still unique and fairly cheap, but I guess some are cancelling or not jumping in.  Considering I joined 808 primarily for this I'm quite annoyed by the misrepresentation.  A joker deck, especially an uncut should be all unique and actual jokers (non playable).  Seriously, how hard would it have been to do a separate run for the uncuts and a few full joker decks.  Then make another version numbered.   >:(

244
Look at the q of clubs, then 2 rows up to q of spade, same.  Then try k and j of clubs and up ver to related of spades, also the same.  Still a must have, but disappointing.

245
Just FYI - I had noticed that this is not a TRUE Joker deck and was quite disappointing to see that.  This does make it playable, but sad.  That's pretty obvious if you're not looking at it with such excitement, but what you may have missed and others have pointed out is that there are repeating images.  Ugh, I'll still keep my order, but come on!!!  Such promise to be their greatest idea ever, but no.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Lakota Playing Cards (KS)

I did send her a message on KS about the size of the cards and she actually responded in a few hours with "The cards will be poker sized", but for some odd reason has never bothered to publicly state that.  Take it for whatever that's worth I guess or direct ask yourself as well.  It's also really strange that she hasn't provided any clarification of a number of questions or provided any meaningful update since the back redesign.  I can see a number of plausible explanations for all of the oddities in this project, especially the funding as it's a 'cultural' deck a tribe or tribe owned casino could have gotten involved or semi-self funded to allow for even more direct sales later.

The price is low enough to take a risk if just one deck, but I decided even with the changes I don't need to add it to my collection.  The index number is too close to the suit and it really bothers me, or at least that's the story I'm telling myself to stay away.

It looks like this has been brought up a few times, but no response and threads locked.  Just wondering if that will happen?  Most if the other forums I am on use it and it sure makes it easier to keep up with them all in one place.  Thanks for the consideration.

Heads up for anybody interested, I see the project is in final 2 days and is now funded.  There is also a MUCH improved back design, but I'm still confused on poker vs bridge size being used here as it appears bridge is focus of latest design updates.  I'm on the fence at the moment myself.

Thanks for the how-to Rob and input from all the others!  I picked up a pair of the Hobby Lobby shadow boxes a week ago and over the past week completed the modifications.  The permanent display wall isn't yet built and the temporary one in my office requires removing some unused furniture first, so photo of them on the ground it is!  This is most of my small collection, just missing some plain and a few custom decks that are used for play and the uncut sheets.  Not to mention the HUGE list still on the way from KS and other places.  Going to have to make some decisions or build more of these I fear.... ;)

A few extra comments on the build process if it helps others.  My local hardware store didn't have hardwood trim in the style presented so I had to use pine screen molding which is obviously a bit softer and has 2 rounded edges.  I had a heck of a time lining up the holes and this wood REQUIRED pre-drilling to prevent splitting.  I found the trick to be measuring out uniform holes and drilling those on the back of the frame (remember drill from the FRONT side to keep up appearances - back will have 'exit wounds'), then inserting the bottom row of screws and using them to 'score' each pre-cut and painted shelf by pressing it against this row.  In that way I could use it as a template for the pre-drilling into each shelf.  To screw in each shelf I then did each screw in order partially and could use the pre-drilled hole to find the proper position.  Given the VERY limited margin for error on such a thin board (1/4 inch is all it can handle, would have preferred to go with 1/2 inch) this was important and I still had a few minor deviations that will require touch up paint if I get OCD enough about it. Once filled though you really only see the front so not a big deal.  I also removed the foam backing to allow more depth for the decks without being pressed against the glass.  I also then cut that backing into strips and placed on the edges of the frame in back which pushed the back of the frame out a bit to allow the cards and shelves to sit just a little deeper.

Thanks for the input.  I took out the screws on the back and on my version of the HL frame anyhow it was simply a foam backing with fabric glued to it that was just screwed in with the backing, so the foam was able to be simply removed with no byproducts.  I am cutting the foam into strips to place on the edges and raise the back out at the same prior level which will then provide a more direct contact for the shelves while providing a bit more room for the decks.  The backing is brown so I'll just paint that with the shelves, although 98% of it will be covered by decks anyhow.
