Vote away! If you think I missed an option, post it below and I may add it to the list. You can change your vote at any time to accommodate for a new option that may appear.

The poll runs for the next week, at which point it will close, and we will have an idea of what 2011 really meant for our niche world of playing cards.

Post what you voted for below as well, and feel free to defend why your choices are the correct ones. :)

Year of the YouTube deck review: Cardsrfun came back from his hiatus. New people are doing great reviews.

Year of the independent artists and kickstarter: This year alone we saw Lance T. Miller, Aether Cards, Circle City Cards, Mana, Seasons, and so many people i am forgetting come out of the blue and release popular designs and successful decks.

Year of the Innovation of playing cards: This was the year the magic finish became a popular finish. I can name at least 20 decks that use it. And i think many of use agree in saying it is one of if not the best finish.

Strangely I think its been both a year of smaller independents and the big companies at the same time. I mean we havn't seen a year this big lately for independent card companies yet we have also had some massive releases from big companies in the past year.
Mystery is the basic appeal of magic. Once the secrets are known, the magician becomes a mere manipulator, an actor in a suspense drama which has little impact because the audience knows the ending in advance.

The only one I had trouble deciding was the year of the card collector. At first I thought it was but in reality it was too much for an average collector in my opinion. It was a fun year to be a collector but there were too many decks.

I went with year of the card collector. It was fun collecting then selling so I could collect some more. With all the decks that came out, it was a challenge to be able to have at least one on the shelf.

Year of the silly number of deck releases... D&D had 4, I think? Maybe more.  E had a bunch, T11 had a bunch, BBM had a few and there was a new Kickstarter project every week or so.

Oh wow, Limited Deck Scandals and Kickstarter/Artists are taking the lead by a long shot, but it's a close battle between the two!

I respect opinion of other people but can someone who voted “Year of the Independent Artists & Kickstarter” explain me such vote. Is this poll about facts or illusions? See this list http://aethercards.com/discourse/index.php?topic=522.0 and tell me how many INDEPENDENT/KICKSTARTER you can find in it. By the way - independent of… what?… money, government, USPCC, common sense, etc  :)

And also I think it’ll be reasonable to point that this poll about USPCC poker size decks :)  (at least for newcomers).

Voted. Sorry for my good mood in 2012 ;)

I can see a category missing - year of the custom deck glut.  A zillion and one releases from Thanksgiving to Year's End is insane.

Well I didn't vote for this but I think I can help to explain it. "Independent/Kickstarter", well firstly independent of a big organization or team. Many of the people using Kickstarter weren't connected to Theory11, Ellusionist, Dan & Dave or one of the other big names. Also it wasn't a team of artists, instead it was often just one artist. Alex was the artist behind the Vortex, Russel behind the Americanas, Lance, behind the Actuators, Adam behind the Revision 1, etc...

It's those two elements that make them independent in a sense. On top of that they used Kickstarter, and I'm sure I don't need to explain that connection.

I think it was a big year for the "Independent/Kickstarter" movement because this year we really saw it grow in a huge way. You had multiple decks make big numbers on Kickstarter and because of this you saw many other people try their hand at it (successful or not). I think that Kickstarter really helped people like Alex accomplish what they have! I'm sure if kickstarter wasn't there that Alex and the other designers would have found a way around it, but with Kickstarter being there it has been a big year for both the website and those that use it.

Because of Kickstarter and the "Independent" artists we have seen many awesome decks and an awesome forum come to life. That's why I could see many people pick that as one of their top 3

brown_baggs,

I understand everything you posted very well. As I see you missed irony in both my messages on the forum. Anyway I appreciate your explanation.

[/size]Only one “kickstarter” deck was printed in 2011 – Brimstone (even this one didn’t avoid little rows). So name 2011 year of independent/kickstarter decks is overoptimistic. Will you name 2012 year of Twitter in case of 1-10 tweets on it in 2012? :)
