Hochman Updates / Hochman Updates
« on: April 07, 2020, 09:38:26 AM »
52 plus Joker's Cellar of Fine Vintages now has a dedicated board to collecting items that have so far escaped attention in the Hochman Encyclopedia.

Being the Cellar of Fine Vintages, please only post items from 1950 and earlier, and use scans when you can.  With your post, please share any details that would help with dating your cards, and please include the Hochman ID most relevant to your post.  If you are unsure into which section your cards should go, just post in the Unsure category and we will try to figure out where it should go.

If you have a correction to Hochman, please post that in the appropriate category and explain the basis for the change.

Topics will be listed according to the Chapters in the Second Edition of The Hochman Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards.  All items submitted are subject to being included in a future update of Hochman's Encyclopedia.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / The Russell & Morgan Co. slipcase boxes
« on: April 06, 2020, 04:47:19 PM »
So I've seen these around, but I've never really understood which decks they were issued with or during what time period.  All the ones I have came with mismatched decks.  I'd like to pair these up with appropriate decks, so if you know something, spill it.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Anyone know what brand this back goes with?
« on: January 30, 2020, 02:57:12 PM »
Got this in a lot of cards.  Has USPC courts in use from approx 1900 to 1950.  Deck is missing AS.   Can anyone ID the brand and maybe back design?  Thanks in advance.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Western Aviator deck
« on: July 01, 2019, 12:52:30 PM »
Here is an interesting find.  I'd always seen the SPCC Aviator decks, but I'd never seen one from Western.  Based on the tax stamp (10 cents, 1924-1929), I'd guess this deck came out about the same time as the SPCC deck, so maybe SPCC put the kibosh on this deck.  Anyone know any details about these Aviators?  Which were first?

I am buying some cards from a guy in Philly, but he doesn't do PayPal, just cash, and I am in Austin.  Anyone know someone trustworthy in Philly whom I could pay to pick up the decks and ship them to me?  I would prepay via PayPal the cost of the cards, shipping, and reasonable fee for their time.

Thanks.

Clay

I am looking for some cheap, good decks to use in my monthly poker game, so I thought about casino decks.  However, most casino decks have pretty ugly backs due to the name of the casino being plastered on there.  Anybody know of any decent looking casino decks out there?  And with decent court cards (meaning not Bicycle courts, because bleh)?

If no luck there, what cards do you guys use for poker?  I currently use Serpentine, Superior and Gamesters.

Hello, all.  I listed about 20 antique (100+ year-old) decks. Mix of Bicycle, Dougherty, Standard. Auction ends Sunday, Feb 3.  Check them out:

https://www.m.ebay.com/sch/i.html?sid=clahobo&isRefine=true&_pgn=1

So these are all of my Dougherty monogramed decks, and I would love it if anyone could identify any of the monograms.  The top left spells out Union in the "U" shape, but what kind of union I can't say.  The others are "TR&C", "BC", and "HC".  If you know or have any guesses as to what these stand for, place in comments.  Thanks.

Just picked up this cool ad on eBay.  It is a USPC price list (1893 per the listing).  I've never seen the red eagle back with shields in the corners before, but I really want one now.  Anyone know which line of USPC cards this was a part of?  Anybody have one?  (I'll post a better pic when the ad arrives)

There is an old thread on PCF (http://www.playingcardforum.com/index.php?topic=1959.msg35823#msg35823) that mentions that there are Aristocrat back designs other than the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3, but I've never seen one or been able to find any images, until now.  Just picked up an Aristocrat Allover No. 7 deck c.1944 (see pics).  So I guess there are backs No. 4, No. 5 and No.6, maybe more.  Does anyone have any of those decks or info about the Nos. 4+ Aristocrat backs?  If so, please post.  Love to see the mystery deck backs.

I'm looking for a two deck set of Gamesters for my poker game, so I though I'd see if anyone had a gently used set so I don't have to spend $24 to buy new.  Will pay $14 for opened, gently used, including shipping.

$45, shipping included. Pay by PayPal. US only

I need to clean up some space for the collection, so I am going to part with 29 Bicycle Standard Rider Back. Thought I would try here before going to eBay. Stock up and save.

Anyone know, more or less, when the Rider Backs switched to craggy hills from smooth hills in the background?  The earliest image I can find with the craggy hills is from the 1915-1916 USPC Official Rules of Cards Games book, but I wondered if someone else has actual cards that can narrow it down.  In fact, seeing the images of the earliest Rider Backs on Joseph Pierson's site, I was wondering how well one can date a deck of Rider Backs just from the backs and what one would have to look for.  If you have any suggestions, post below.

Anyway, below are the 1915-16 image and the version from the 1911 edition of the same book.  If you have images of the cards from this time frame, please post.

This is my listing.  Low(ish) starting price.  Check it out:

If you bid and win, let me know. Special offer for 52+J folks.

Just picked up this neat item from USPCC which I am guessing is from around 1900.  Lots of info about Cincinnati and some ads for USPCC printed on what look like USPCC card backs.  I could identify the Congress Delft Back, but not the others.  Anyone happen to know if the other designs were also card backs, and, if so, what the names are?

I've got a joker that needs a home.  Looking for a nice condition green plaid back Steamboat 999 c.1895, Hochman US7a with the United States Printing Co. Ace of Spades.  Looking to buy or trade.
I'm not trading the joker, just looking for a deck to go with my joker.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Blue Ribbon decks
« on: October 26, 2016, 01:06:58 PM »
Picked these up the other day, and I'd never heard of this back before.  Has a 10 cent tax stamp.

So Blue Ribbon comes in Rosette, Urn, Acorn, Meadow - any other surprises?  Any idea which are more scarce than others?  I'm guessing Rosette, Urn, Acorn, Meadow

Update:  Known named backs:  Rosette, Filigree, Urn, Acorn, Meadow, Koh-I-Noor

Update 4/20:  Known named backs:  Rosette, Filigree, Urn, Acorn, Meadow, Koh-I-Noor, Wicker

So, I was looking at some old Aristocrat decks that are both 1 pack tax stamped, and I noticed they were consecutive years - 1941 (C) and 1942 (D).  Then I noticed the 1941 had Russell Playing Card Co on the Ace of Spades, and the 1942 deck had US Playng Card Co..  Here's a pic.  I don't know much about card stock or finish, but these 75 year old Aristocrats feel nice.

Anyone know if this name change was implemented across all USPC Russell decks at this time?  Or was this just the Aristocrats?

Just noticed the change in the Guarantee Joker.  1942 omitted "unused"

I'm looking for some Pullman poker size decks in decent shape with the custom Ace of Spades..  Need in two different colors.  Opened is preferred since I want to use these for play.

Let me know if you have any you are willing to part with.

Thanks,

Clay

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Info about Piatnik Jockey cards - solved
« on: September 23, 2016, 02:35:37 PM »
So, I found these cards (and I really like them), but I have no idea what a good purchase price would be.  I know nothing about Piatnik cards. Here's a pciture of the ace.

Anyone have any knowledge of this deck?  Date made, scarcity, value?  All responses appreciated.  Thank you.

Bought a brick of each and have some extra sets to sell.  $12 gets you a red and blue deck of the new Superior Classics.  These are not the marked Readers, just some nice new cards for $6 / deck.  Reserve now if you are interested, and I'll update as soon as they come in (which should be this week).

Free shipping only to continental US

Here's a pic of the new Superior Classics and the original National Card. Co Apollo deck.  The Queen looks happier in the old deck.
