Recently my mom bought a new laptop and during my time setting it up and installing Rainmeter and adding all of the touches to make it how she wanted I figured I might as well give it a shot on customizing my macbook desktop as well. There is really no easy way to customize OSX Lion, due to not having any Rainmeter like programs to use, so I have been redoing graphics and small recoding of widgets to allow them to work how I want them to including making them usable without having to activate dashboard.

Here is a thread where we can share ideas and post screenshots of what you have done to make your desktop your own.

Here is my current desktop screen after a fair amount of work, mainly teaching myself to modify stuff in OSX since I am used to Windows OS

I will continue show updates as I figure out and come up with ideas to improve the design.

As you can see, I went for a grayscale design except for a few features, like the tiger eye. I didn't create the tiger image ( I really wish that I could say I did ) but they eye modification was my idea. All of the skinning on the widgets are done by me and are always improving when I come up with different ideas.

I strip everything down to minimize load times; plain white background, Windows 95 style interface.

I use nocturnal to be able to have a black bar up top and switch to "night" if I wish to. That's pretty much it for me.

that looks pretty nifty :) I used to be heavy into theming my OS, I even had windows XP completely restyled to look like a clone of vista (before the beta was out) everyone was like "How'd he get that"
Now Im too lazy, but I can always appreciate a nicely themed OS ;)

Yeah, on my desktop I keep everything quite simple. I also boot off of an SSD so it is quick to begin with. But with my macbook I decided to mess around a bit and see what custom stuff I could do.

Here is an updated screenshot, I added an itunes controller and moved some stuff around. Also realized that the Discourse creates its own RSS feed, so now its really simple to see new posts.

Here you go mate, this is much simpler than trying to work through the loopholes that I am doing to get customization to work properly on my macbook. This program is called rainmeter, install it, learn how to use it and you will be able to customize your desktop very easily. There are already tons of themes and widgets made for rainmeter, so once you learn how to use it well, the possibilities are endless. It is what I would use if I wasn't running OSX, unfortunately they have not written the program to work with OSX and there really is not anything like it that I could use, hence the reason I have had to fool around with the code and redo all the graphics to get my desktop screen how I would like it.

Kinda sort of, but not really.  It would likely be very glitchy.  Now, running Windows on a Mac is easy-peasy.
