I'm sure you have noticed that we have some talented artists here, but why limit ourselves to playing cards?
I'm curious to see what you guys have to show off. Portfolio pieces, midnight sketches, web design, whatever - just post some of your favorite creations. ;)

Alright, I'll start, since I'm the one creating the thread. Here's something I'm working on right as we speak. It's just the beginning, but I quite like the look of it so far so I'll share it with you.
And before you ask, no, it's not meant to be a Queen design. ::)

She may not be a Queen, but she's darn cute!  I detect an anime/manga influence in this piece...

That's where I started.  I'm trying to get away from the style a bit though, both for personal choice and portfolio requirements in college. This lady here is a first step towards a more personal style. ;)

And I must admit most of my female characters all have at least one common inspiration...
If only she knew. ::)
Yes, she's just as cute.

Well aside from collecting cards, I'm also an automotive photographer. I made this website and you can check out some pics here - AfocusPhotography.com

Here's a few pics to check out now.

Also do some graphic design work which I'll post if I can find anything. Been awhile haha.

It's half and half. I do some rallies and shows just for fun to take pictures and sometimes I do photoshoots or cover events and get paid. I'll see if I can dig up some personal pics and post them  :)

The banners were for the city of Indianapolis and the Fox is a still image from an animated short I did back in 2005 called "Silent Fox and the Hen House". I used to work on animation projects at night after my day job. That slowly stopped once the kiddos came along.

Thanks Derek and Moon.exe,

That was a fun project. They even had a press conference to unveil the banners and I got to
meet Danny Granger of the Indiana Pacers. He was very tall and seemed pretty nice!

The only downside was because of budget they had to downsize the banners from the original
14 to the 8 that I show up above. There were versions with the Indy Speedway, the Indy AAA Baseball
team and some other museums and parks.

thanks, Randy

I'm pretty sure a lot of card throwers can throw a card into an apple, though to have the card displayed straight up like that they'd need to be pretty lucky. ;)
Which makes me think I should have added a queen somewhere to make a blackjack... ::)

It doesn't have to be.  And with the right agent, it COULD be.  Agents don't make you punch a clock, but they do help get your work into galleries and magazines and get it sold.  You can create your art whenever you want.  All the agent wants to see is sellable work on a fairly steady basis, since you and his other artists are his source of income.

Thanks Russell!

Yep, my wife and I have been here for almost 5 years now. Great city! We love it here. We're in the Lawrence area, by the Geist.
It was actually the Brimstone and Americana decks that inspired me to check out this whole custom playing cards universe when
I saw them on Kickstarter last summer.

People say nothing's impossible, but I do nothing everyday.

Today I found something that reminded me of you. But don't worry I flushed and everything went back to normal.

I know a lot of you guys (and girl!) are interested in Photography. A friend of mine just sent me a link to this really cool Photography
video created by a couple of his buddies. A lot of cool techniques were used. It really makes me miss the bay area!

thanks, Randy
Really like that. Looks awesome! Is it only photography or are some of the first parts film as well? This makes me proud of living in the Bay Area!

Hey Nathan,

I have no idea if it's all just time-lapse photography or some video mixed in as well. I would guess just photography. The work was created by a friend of a friend, so I don't know much about it. I just thought a lot of the photography fans on The Discourse would like it.

I didn't know you live in the Bay Area Nathan. From 2000-2007 I lived on the good ol' island of Alameda! I loved it there and it was awesome going to downtown San Francisco for work. It really is a georgeous area. My wife's family still lives out there so we visit the Bay Area at least once a year.

thanks, Randy

Ok, thx.
I live in Oakland since 2001. I moved twice: in my first house I could see all of San Francisco. It was beautiful! Now, I am very close to both Piedmont, Grand Lake, and Downtown, and I can see the beautiful hills as well as a bit of SF.
I take Bart and MUNI to SF to go to school everyday, and a 5 times a week I take bart to El Cerrito to either go to my Judo classes or to go to my piano lessons.
:D

Next time I visit my stepbrother in the lower Bay, I'll drop you a line.  I was there two summers ago for a big aikido seminar in the woods to the north of SF.

I just finished a fun Pro Bono job for a friend-of-a-friend. The subject is something I've loved since a kid, Star Wars (no Prequel crap)! It's for the Indiana chapter of the 501st, a group that dresses up as Star Wars characters for a lot of charity events and conventions.

They asked me to design three different logos for their 10th Anniversary so they could all vote on which version to use. I know they're not worried about copyright material so I'm guessing the parent group is associated with Lucasfilms directly or it's something to do with their charity work. All I know is they said I had free reign to redraw any character, vehicle or weapon!

thanks, Randy

I'm a Star Wars fan, and more than a little familiar with the 501st Legion!  I have a friend on the NYPD who has  Imperial Forces icon stickers on his riot helmet and a stormtrooper's uniform as well!  They've divided the world into regions called "garrisons" represented by places in the Star Wars Universe - naturally, New York State is Coruscant.  While there may be more urban locales, our state motto (which still appears prominently on out cars' license plates) is "EMPIRE STATE"!

Because they're not making any money and doing charitable work, Lucasfilm is not simply tolerant but supportive of the group's activities.  They've even been known to request member-volunteers to appear in costume at official events like premieres, award ceremonies, etc.

I'm just trying to figure out what "SAOA" stands for.  It's what's written in that "alien alphabet" (better known to fans as Aurebesh) on all three of the designs.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the SAOA type means. It was one of the type requirements that needed on each version.

We used to see these guys dressed up when my wife and I would go to WonderCon in San Francisco (similar to ComicCon).
I didn't know they did so much charity work though until this project. Pretty cool!

thanks, Randy
