  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

  • Facebook:
Jackson Robinson, a fellow 52 Plus Joker member, has been nominated for the Playing Card Artist of the Year Award for all four years that we've had Diamond Awards, including this one.  This year, July 2019 through June 2020, he created and released no less than 21 decks (at least those are all that the Diamond Awards Committee know of!) - and that's not even a record for him.  Fortunately for the world of playing cards, quantity and quality go hand in hand for Robinson, and for that reason, he caught the attention and the nomination of the DAC.

I am expecting Jackson to pop in here and elaborate a bit further on his decks, provide some images and so forth - I look forward to it immensely!  Thanks in advance, Jackson.

His decks are, in alphabetical order (and in the case of Kings Wild Shorts, chronological order):
* Black Reserve Note - Green Ed.
* Equinox I v2 Reprint
* Invocation
* Kings Wild Americanas
* Kings Wild Shorts: July 2019: Valley Forge
* Kings Wild Shorts: August 2019: Verum Videre v2

Equinox 1 v2 Reprint

The Equinox I - 2019 Standard Edition is a luxury reprint of the first deck of the Kings Wild Shorts Subscription service that launched a year ago in September. For the 2019 edition, both the card manufacturer and tuck case manufacturer were upgraded to EPCC (cards) and Clove St. Press (Tuck Case) to give the Equinox I the same luxurious fit and finish as the Equinox II deck had in March.

Invocation Copper
https://youtu.be/pAcuaNPmIX8
The Inspiration for this project has been an interesting one. So many of my decks in the past have centered around a theme or a specific moment in History. Because of this, I have always had historical characters to feature in my decks depending on the theme.

For this project, the beginnings were a little bit different. Many times between projects I will spend a few days just gathering reference and pouring over tons of beautiful images of art and other things that I might find inspiration from.

As I was searching for a creative direction for a new project, a song began to play on my playlist that really caught my attention. My wife sometimes calls me a nerd in my choice of music. I enjoy listening to all types of music but when I am working I seem to find the most focus listening to instrumental music from cinema, games, and other types of media.

This song captivated me, and it was the catalyst for the entire project. I put it on repeat and listened to it to all day while creating a completely new set of court cards from the images of, what I would describe as a mixture of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. The designs that transpired over the course of the day were promising to me, and most of very different from any of my previous work.

The title of the deck was actually derived from the title of the song that sparked it, Invocation.

Kings Wild Americanas: Standard, Limited and Gilded
https://youtu.be/wV77ErWBRSU
This deck celebrates my love for the United States and the nostalgic memories of growing up going to 4th of July celebrations and eating wayyy too many hot dogs.

The Kings Wild Americanas are a beautiful deck for any table game with friends and family. The Americana playing cards are printed by The United States Playing Card Company on crushed Casino Bee Stock and traditionally cut. They have an air-cushioned finished for exceptional handling and play.

The Triple Set includes the red, white, and blue tuck cases, with each edition having it's own unique color of gilded cards inside. The red tuck contains a red gilded deck, the white tuck contains a silver gilded deck, and the blue tuck contains a blue gilded deck.

Kings Wild Shorts: August 2019: Verum Videre v2

The Latin phrase Verum Videre translated means "See the Truth"
Verum Videre issues in a new chapter for Kings Wild Project. One of my goals is to be able to be more self-sufficient in the total production process of making my playing cards. I do this in an effort to create the most personal and bespoke playing cards possible. I also do this because of a Biblical principal and verse that I have adopted as a mission statement for both my life and business.

Kings Wild Shorts: February 2020: VHS 1982
https://youtu.be/Y84osqJ2lgs
VHS 1982 is a nostalgic retro playing card deck that brings back memories of putting electrical tape over your VCR to keep it from blinking all night long and blowing the Nintendo game cartridge out before you start a four hour Contra marathon with your big brother.

VHS 1982 is a light-hearted deck that is inspired by the bold designs of the early 80s. The Kings Wild standard court cards get a totally rad upgrade with face-melting holographic foiling on both the front and back of these retro playing cards.

Kings Wild Shorts: March 2020: Postage Paid
https://youtu.be/EbWeHzy9gyU
The Postage Paid deck was originally inspired by a close playing card collector friend named Joseph Pierson. Joseph has one of the most extensive and diverse playing card collections in the world. On Joseph's Instagram feed, he posted images of playing cards from the early 20th century that were written on and sent as postcards. Using cast-off playing cards was a common occurrence before the post office made the minimum size of a parcel 4"x 6". This collection of playing card "postcards" sparked the idea in my brain as I wanted to see the rest of the cards in the incomplete deck Joseph had managed to piece together over the years.
Each card in my Postage Paid deck and also in Joseph's postcard collection features a stamp and also postal address of the recipient of the card.
As a special feature of the deck, I asked all of the Kings Wild Shorts subscribers to send in a fictitious address that meant something to them so that they could be immortalized within the deck in their own special way.
Each card also has a traditional style "postage paid" stamp, canceling out the postage stamp. All 50 states are present with a city representing the state.

Kings Wild Shorts: April 2020: El Toro
https://youtu.be/kcWmEj9stXg
El Toro is a fresh, unique and hand-illustrated deck of standard size playing cards inspired by traditional Mezcal Spirit labels. Pulling from the simple but beautiful Mezcal bottles for our playing card designs, El Toro features a strikingly simple tuck case, that grabs your attention with spanish style cards that have highly contrasting colors and bold typography. Relying heavily on the eye-pleasing aesthetic of straight to the point typesetting, El Toro uses a simple serifed font to communicate its message.

Kings Wild Shorts: May 2020: Solstice I
https://youtu.be/oNvM4jbjnm4
The Solstice is the third deck in a 4 deck series thematically based on the Equinox and Solstice Calendar events.  Solstice continues the series them by celebrating the Summer Solstice ushering in the beautiful colors of summer. The Solstice tuck case features a premium paper stock with three, intricately foiled color patterns. The combinations of colors on the tuck create a vibrant presentation. The Standard Edition Solstice has a sleek and simle design that makes a perfect pairing to its more elaborate Limited and Gilded Edition siblings. The completely custom court cards continue this theme with refreshing colors of summer and simple but beautiful court cards that are a refreshing change to the "same old" cards you might be used to. When playing cards or table games in the coming summer months, choosing the Solstice deck to deal out will not only freshen up your table scenery but you will find that The Solstice deck is also a highly functional, easily playable deck for all ages.

Kings Wild Shorts: June 2020: General Admission
https://youtu.be/W5K8l_E_4R0
The design inspiration for this unique deck came from Jackson's draw towards vintage ticket stubs from the early 20th century. Printed by EPCC, the semi-gloss tuck case resembles the layout of a ticket stub, including the gate number, section, row, and seat, which hide an Easter Egg for those who follow Jackson's design themes closely. The complex back design plays along the same lines, adding design elements resembling some of Kings Wild's currency decks, along with the iconic logo.

Six Foot Five: Gilded Edition
The Six Foot Five deck is a very limited run of 250 decks. Each deck comes hand numbered. The cards were printed by The Expert Playing Card Company and the tucks case was intaglio engraved by Artistry Ink Engraving and Embossing.

The deck features beautiful metallic blue and gold inks and the tuck case as a stunning dual colored effect using Artistry Ink's specially mixed, in-house golden blue ink called "Peacock Blue".
