So as some of you may know, I am currently in NYC, and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Discourse member Good@Sabacc (AKA Don Boyer).

We met at a local pizza joint, where I enjoyed a slice of pizza served exclusively there, a slice I crave immensely each year. We talked cards, and I got my brick of Black Crowns. I showed him the Vortex Prototype 2 deck and gave him quite a bit of insider info on future Aether products. Info that, at this time, about two other people know.

We stopped by his place afterwards, and I met his family. Very nice folks, and perhaps the strangest part was that they spoke Russian. Since I am staying with my Russian family, it felt as though I already knew them. In fact, I don't doubt for a second that one of my relatives know Don's family. Russians are extremely inter-connected in NYC.

Anyway, he showed me his card collection and sweet lord is it big. By Don's own estimates, he has about 800+ decks. I have about the same amount, but nowhere near that variety. A good half of my decks are up for sale, and another 100-200 are open decks I plan on selling later. Suffice to say, looking back on our conversations I realize now how hilarious they really were. It went something along the lines of "Hey, you know this deck..." followed by Don showing me the deck in question.

He was kind enough to throw me a Johnny Cupcakes deck, as well as some sealed casino decks made by Gemaco. The decks are of surprisingly good quality, but the real highlight is that they are uncancelled and out of print!

After talking magic for a little while, it was time to go. My biggest take away was the knowledge that I now know one more amazing person in NYC, and that Gemaco has a unique stock/finish that handles superior to USPCC cards, and is now something I will be looking into for future Aether decks.

My only regret is that I didn't have any swag to give Don. Maybe next year, when I finally have tubs full of Aether merch.

Thanks for the kind words, Alex - I had a fantastic time and it was my pleasure to have you over and you're a great guy and a fun conversationalist.  BTW: you left behind one of the decks I gave you!  I handed you seven decks - two each of the three casino deck colors and one JCupcakes.  You left one of the casino decks; I can't recall which now, but it's the color you currently only possess one of!

The Gemaco deck that Alex fell in love with is an uncanceled deck from the House of Blues Casino in Atlantic City.  Our old friend the1eyedjack is selling them; that's where I got mine.  I know that so many people are biased towards USPC, but honestly, gang, they are the 800-pound gorilla but they aren't the only game in town.

Technically, Gemaco is a recently-acquired subsidiary of USPC, but they appear to be leaving it to operate autonomously, much as they do with Fournier in Spain.  Having seen the headaches Alex is having dealing with Erlanger, Gemaco might be a good alternative for the Harlequin.

I just reorganized my collection - I almost had to, since I pulled a lot of it out to show Alex!  I'll take some photos soon.  It occupies an entire bookshelf unit; a narrow one, but the whole thing, plus a briefcase and a couple of small boxes.  I'll give me a chance to inventory it as well.

I've seen huge swings in quality in the uncancelled casino Gemacos I have (got a mixed brick).  Some are really bad, in fairness but some (and in particular, the Golden Nugget deck I got) are really, really good; easily matching most USPCC decks (I wouldn't go so far as to say they're better, though).

Nice to see you guys had a good time.  I'll be sure to drop you guys a line if I'm ever in town.

I'd be curious as to how difficult and costly it would be to have Fournier make the next deck...

I suggested US Games as a possible alternative, but the quality isn't outstanding and they mostly make tarot decks.

Cartamundi was mentioned, but the quality can be kind of shabby - anyone have a really great Cartamundi deck out there they'd like to brag about?  The Magic Castle decks were c-r-a-p for handling, but astonishingly the plastic Ace standard edition decks impressed Alex a lot - they feel like powdered paper and they can fan reasonably well.

I'm also very interested in those possible alternatives to USPCC. I'll try to get one or two of those Gemaco decks, and if anyone has found some kind of gem from a casino, be sure to lets us know! ;)

As for Alex's offer, it's really awesome of you and I'll definitely consider it if I ever do visit Vegas. I'd love to, eventually, when money allows it. ::)

Haha, like a couple of others I've seen before me, if I do end up going to Vegas, I'll be sure to drop round. It'd be awesome to check out your collection. :D
But, don't hold your breath. It'll be quite a few years before I visit Vegas. ;) Speaking of which, what's the gambling age in Vegas?

Ah, okay. That makes sense. And I guess the casino age limit is 18 because that's when you're legally allowed to drink alcohol in the UK. Well, actually, there's technically no age limit on alcohol; it's legal to drink alcohol at home at any age. But obviously, this is in public, and without a meal.
