Once every couple of weeks, I go to YouTube and type in "playing card collection".  Then I sort by upload date, and browse the new videos of collections.

I came across this sad video of a guy who lost his entire collection when a typhoon went through his city back in December

 Here's the video
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOF3RGBQ11k

Obviously the lives lost in the flood, and the damages to the homes and infrastructure is horrible.  My thoughts and prayers go out to them all.

Here's a guy who collected these cards, loved these cards, and was so sad that he lost them that he made a video about them.

I could not imagine losing the collection I've taken years to build up.  I would like to propose something...

I'm going to send this guy some sealed decks to get him started again.  If any of you would also like to help out, that would be great as well... but please do not feel obligated.

I remember when CardsRfun had to sell his entire collection because his dad was very ill.  I felt horrible for the guy.  It's good to see that AceKing has helped him build his collection back up.

I’m going to send him the following decks…
- D&D V6
- White Arcane
- Black Arcane
- Blue Bicycle Masters
If you want to contribute some decks, or help with shipping costs for the care bundle, please post here or PM me if you want to keep it private.

Jay, you should send this vid. to Theory11, D & D, Ellusionist. Maybe they could help out with replacing the decks he lost. I'll take a look at my collection and see if I can help out.

I left him a comment. I hope he realizes that him not dying is far more important than a silly collection (and any collection is silly compared to the gift of life). People died in the typhoon. These people all had dreams, hobbies, and loves. By no means is losing a collection an experience anyone should have to go through, but he has decades to rebuild what he lost. The meanings and symbolism he attributes to his cards may inspire happiness, but the meanings and symbolism attributed to human life is far more important and deep.

If I lost my collection to a burglary, I'd be depressed. If I lost my collection to a natural disaster that failed to take my life and the life of those I hold dear, I don't think I could push myself to care as much. I think this guy will learn that as time goes on and he realizes just how quickly he can replace his collection if he wants to.

I made a comment on UC about how we as collectors should get together and help people who lose their collections like this. If only the Vortex decks were already printed, I would send him a brick and get him started again.

EDIT: Jay, if you contact this guy and have him send me his mailing address, I would like to ship him some decks from my shop. I'll try to restock some of the ones he named in his video.

Sooo....

T11, Ellusionist, the1eyedjack, Zenneth Kok(NewFanBack), Handy Altan(Dreamcatcher), as well as some forum members have all stepped up so far.  I am blown away.

And I still have more companies to hear from.

It's not too late to help out.  PM me if you want in.

I'm currently figuring out what to put in his care package. Jay, do you mind posting a list of the decks that he is getting so I can focus my efforts on the ones he doesn't get replaced?

Do we have a list yet of what he is getting? then again, it probably won't matter if we duplicate, I've got a few decks in mind that i'll send him.
Also an address to send donated decks too?
Probably better to PM his address to those who want to help rather than post it on a public forum.

Well, for example, if T11 is sending him a brick of Deck One's, I'd rather send him a SMv6 instead of another Deck One. It seems like Carlo actually attributes meaning to individual decks, and I want to help his collection be rebuilt with that meaning. If we CAN create variety, why shouldn't we? :)

I will hopefully have an address in the US to send your decks to by tonight.  Then we can send it off in one bundle to avoid all the people listed shipping overseas.

If the info I posted is incorrect, please let me know.

If I forgot you, please let me know.

If you are sending something, please put the value of it very low.. or even a gift.

Wow i am shocked at the fact so many people are helping to contribute. It is amazing when a relatively small community pulls together to create such amazing results.

@good@sabacc He will have a bigger collection then you at the end of this :P

I believe it!  A lot of people are pulling together for this.

When I ordered the Bicycle Clot Limited Editions deck, they sent me an extra deck.  Put me down for that, and where do I send it?

We'd like to give Carlo 2 sets of each deck we have designed. (Brimstone, Revision 1 and Americana)

It's great to see the whole community come together in a time of need and help out a fellow collector!

Just working out the details for an address in the U.S.  People can ship their decks their (if they want), and they will be re-packaged into one box.

Money will be needed to ship, and will be greatly appreciated.

I'll keep you posted about the address, and how to contribute $$$

I am going to add a bicycle Silver deck to the Cause! I'm pretty sure that's not listed above :). The box is Black and has silver accents, but the back of the cards are sliver. This is a tragedy that the tsunami destroyed all of his decks, but this is a great way to help a guy out, I am very honored to be apart of this!

Thank you Savanna! :)

Hey guys, before you send anymore decks overseas, I will be collecting the decks at my address so I can send them all in one big go, along with my contributions as well. It makes no sense for everyone to pay so much extra for shipping. If you're adamant about spending money, just throw Carlo an extra deck or two.

I will be documenting publicly every shipment I receive. Once all the shipments are in, I'll be packing them and at that point we will need some contributions to ship the package. My estimates for international shipping are $40-100 for this many decks.

Based on what I have seen from our community before, this amount of money will be raised VERY quickly.

This obviously only applies to U.S. contributions. CBJ will give you guys my shipping address.

Alright guys,

This has grown bigger than I though it would lol

So, here's the address to send the decks to if you want to add them to the group package.

AetherCards
4895 East Russell Road #205
Las Vegas, NV 89120
United States

Alex will be making a list of the decks as they come in, and who sent them... just to make sure we get everyone's packages.  If you'd also like to send a letter, that would be fine.

Obviously we want to do this as quick as possible, so if you're in... could you please try to send them to Alex as soon as possible.  Then post in this thread that you've sent your package.

If you'd rather send them on your own, please get the address for the lucky guy out of this thread.. and send away!

I just want to take a second and thank EVERYONE.  I am amazed at the generosity of the members of these forums and the card companies that have helped out.  I can't thank you enough.

Jay aka CBJ

One last thing... If you want to help with shipping costs/customs, shoot me a message.

@Five: You can pay me. The $20 should actually cover about half, if not more, of the shipping costs for a package of that size. Don't pay anything yet though, I want to finalize things.

Hey guys, if you want to save on shipping and you decide to ship to my address (listed a few posts above this one), please make sure you put some kind of notice saying it's for this card drive either on the package or inside of it. I get several packages each week and it will save me some time packing.

I encourage you guys to write a note that includes what you sent, as well as anything else you want to say. I will pack all the notes in a nice envelope with the package as well.

I will ship via USPS. Please please please ship your packages timely so that we don't have stray decks arriving after I send the parcel. I'll be keeping a public record of everything I receive, and I will be announcing on the forums as well as my Twitter (@Aethercards) what day I will send the package. That way, if something has not yet been delivered, you can contact me. :)

If you can't ship out your contribution this month don't worry too much. You can help directly by contributing to the shipping fee fund once the package is ready to go. I will also be sending him a Vortex care package once I receive them, and I will let everyone know if they want to send more things along at that point.

I know some of you may have seen that list and thought "wow, all that? He's already getting a bigger collection than I have, for free! I don't need to contribute." Let me point out that the care package he is receiving is indeed quite insane. It's worth a huge amount of money and is something that takes years for any normal collector to get to.

However, I think anyone that loses their home and all of their belongings (and we don't know if he lost friends or family but let's pray he didn't) deserves all of these decks, and then some. Several days ago I made a post about how we should build a safety net in our community for these sorts of things. This is that safety net at work. If any one of you, god forbid, went through something like this in your lives, myself and everyone else here would look out for you and do all this for you as well.

So please, throw in a deck if you haven't already. This is what community is all about.

I want this kid to open up his packages and realize that for every bad thing in his life, there are ten people wanting to make things better. =]

Big thank you goes to Jay (CBJ) who organized all of this.

I'll calculate your total costs tonight and send you the invoice for the decks + shipping + donation tomorrow morning.

In the event that I don't end up receiving any packages I will pocket your $20 and have you select $20 worth of decks from my shop that I will ship in your name to him. :)

It is awesome to see the support this guy is getting from the community!

It's that time of year again for me where I become broke due to tuition and textbook fees and unfortunately the majority of my collection are single decks that I can't really part with. But, I figure that since this guy is already receiving the blue watermelon deck in his care package, that he might as well get the red one as well  :) . I'll be shipping down a deck of the red watermelons to you Alex, hopefully within the next week.

@Curt: Thank you. :) Glad to see so many people stepping up!

I will obviously be including my own contributions (I'll be shipping him a brick of Vortex decks and an uncut sheet when I get them, as well as half a brick of random decks from my shop), but if you don't have anything from your personal collection to send, or you don't want to pay ANY shipping fees, you can buy items from my playing card shop and I will add them to the package in your name.

Here is the link: http://aethercards.com/discourse/index.php?topic=1048.0

You will not be invoiced for ANY shipping charges, only the items you buy.

Wow, that's an awesome response in such a short time too, looking through the list I think the only deck I have multiples of that hasn't been donated already is the White Blades.

So my package will include:
White Blades,
Midnight Blades,
Fantastique
Black Crown
Green Crown (1st)
Infinity

I know they are duplicates but I'm sure they'll still be appreciated. As I'm in the UK I'll be sending these direct, probably at the end of the month when the wages go in LOL!

IF you are sending decks to Alex at Aether for the group effort, make sure you write on the package that it is for the group shipment.  Thanks.

I have a cool idea for this project - we'll call it DECK AID!  Not as big as Band Aid, but just as well-intentioned.

I'm getting a package to Alex@Aether today.  In addition to my Bicycle Clot Ltd. Eds., I'm sending a deck of blue and a deck of red Split Spades Lions - Carlo seemed so fond of the ones he lost.

While I'm at it, I'm sending him an autographed two-deck set of the Bee Split Spades, too.  He'll love those, I'm sure.

And a pack of blue Bicycle Masters, since I have so many of them.  Six decks in total.  Each new paragraph, I paused and thought of another deck to send!  I can't wait to hear his reactions.

I also saw the video The death of a Collection, A goodbye, a sad video but there was a comment that inspired me. Cards are insignificant compared to your life and the lives of those you love. You survived the typhoon, and you now have the rest of your long life to re-establish your collection. It may take you a year, it may take you ten years, but in the end cards can be replaced. Cherish the meaning of your life and the ability to continue collecting when so many others died and are no longer able to do what they love, and not the meaning you attribute to pieces of paper. This was very true. All those cards that vanished because of the demolishing action mothernature has put on them.

What an insane list.  In case you're wondering... it's 179 decks + the four care packages at the top of the list.  I had no idea it would grow to this, I'm simply blown away. Thanks.

so, on Aether.. I need to know if the following people are sending direct, or in the group package...

John

Thanks again guys

Expect to see a lot of joyful weeping...  He won't have replacements for all of his old decks, but he'll have a boatload of decks he never had before, including a few rarities.

Just got back from the post office. Alex should have my red watermelon deck at the end of this week or early next. It's not labeled anything special, but its the only package that a guy named Curt from BC, Canada has ever sent you, so it won't be too hard to distinguish it and put it into the group effort.  ;)

Don't forget to add 12 Vortex decks & a Vortex uncut sheet to the list.

I should be getting the first package tomorrow or Wednesday. I'll be keeping a list of what I receive in this thread.

I think I'll have about 1,500 decks in my home after this, not to mention the 5,000 Vortex decks on their way very soon.   I want to see Carlo's face when he opens this group package.

I received five packages today, a total of about 20 or so decks as of now. Some of the huge highlights were autographed David Blaine decks, the entire Karnival series, a v1 Mirror deck, a Clot deck, and many others I can't remember off the top of my head.

I mailed an international package yesterday in the same box I intend to mail Carlo's package. I will be insuring the package for about the total value of the decks inside, so if they get damaged on the way at least we can just send him a check to get going on a collection. After insurance + tax, the shipping is a whopping $60. I will be holding a fundraiser in a few weeks when all the packages arrive to pay for the cost.

I will be shooting a video detailing everyone's contribution and posting it on my DMC channel for thousands of people to see how amazing you guys are. If you would like to keep your name anonymous, just PM me and let me know.

As more packages arrive I will be compiling a list here, and it will be edited into the original post by Jay. If you are from UC, I will not be updating in the UC thread due to time constraints and the like.

Just adding this from Alex...

from UC:

"If you haven't included any labeling on your packages no worries, all mail addressed to AetherCards is for this project, and my personal mail is addressed to Alexander, so there is no worry of mix ups at this point. A personal letter is still encouraged, but I will be writing a rather large one myself as well."

I received tons of packages today, and it brings out total to almost 100 decks. Shipping this may be a problem... I'll look into the cheapest method, but if anyone has shipped over a gross of decks before, I'd love to know how you did it. As far as I can tell, it may cost over $100 to ship a gross to the Philippines. I think I said earlier it was around $30, back when I thought I wouldn't be receiving more than a few bricks of cards.

Combined with the decks I'm sending, this may even reach 200 decks.

I think the Global Priority Mail boxes top out at 20 pounds, and the large size costs $55 to ship to the Philippines; I recall 78 decks weigh about 14 pounds, give or take. So for $55 you could send… 110 decks? Not sure how helpful that is.

Yep, you're right about the price. However, I'm not sure 110 decks is the correct amount, considering the fact that everything has to be bubble-wrapped. I estimate two of those boxes will be required for a gross, but that means double customs fees for Carlo.

We have to do it all in one shipment.

We have to do it all in one shipment.

A square Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box holds a half-gross, 72 decks - and zero padding.  514.25 cubic inches in the box.
A square Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box is 792 cubic inches, which would allow for approximately 104-110 decks depending on how they're stacked.

The Medium costs $45.50, no insurance or tracking.
The Large costs $58.50, same terms.

It's roughly one-third more capacity for approximately one-fifth more cost.  But it still doesn't appear to be large enough to fit the whole kit and caboodle in a single shipment.

You'd have to go with a custom box size, no flat rate, or split the shipment into two or more boxes.  If the total ends up being around 200 decks, you'll need a box with a minimum of 1430 cubic inches for the decks alone, with no padding material.  The average deck is about 3.3 ounces, so let's call it 10 ounces for three decks and a little bit of the necessary padding.  That's approximately 41 pounds, 11 ounces.  That's $257.65 delivered by the only mail option available, Express Mail International, and that assumes you can keep all three dimensions of the box under 12 inches in length each.  This doesn't include a single shipping, tracking or insurance option.  You'd want to insure 200 decks for roughly $5000, assuming an average value of $25 a deck.

UPS offers something called a 25 KG flat rate box, allowing you to ship well over 200 decks (up to 55 lbs.; roughly 240-260 decks depending on dimensions), but the pricing and terms are hard to decipher - you'd want to talk to UPS about it.  In addition, you'd need to drop off at a staffed retail location (I think - it's quite confusing).  But unless that box is a real deal, the cost to ship by UPS could exceed $600.

I'm shipping my parcel direct so I'm covering all shipping myself which I'm happy to do.
It's great that Alex is collating all orders and dealing with packaging but I don't think he should have to cover all shipping fees.
Perhaps if the shipping cost was divided between everyone who sent Alex a package. I know it kinda sucks to have to pay shipping twice, once to Alex and then again to the Philippines. But lets not lose sight of why we're doing this.

Alex, at the end of the monthy I'l happily Paypal you $20 towards the shipping fees.

(EDIT) Sorry, just reread this thread, is this what is already happening? The cost being split?

@dee1orean: I'm going to hold some fundraising to attain shipping costs for the package.

@Good: UPS is out of the question, their charges are exponentially higher than USPS, & their delivery time is three times as long at the lowest cost. I will be shiping via USPS. It looks like according to your stuff, shipping cost will be about $120-200. I really want to do one shipment so that customs fees will be halved for Carlo. I have no doubt we can raise the necessary money. I'll be waiting on the last packages to arrive so I can test out various boxes from USPS and get an exact quote.

Here's a thought - include fundraising for customs as well as shipping, and time the delivery so a postal money order will arrive faster than the box of cards.  It would allow you to go with the less-expensive shipping option of two flat-rate boxes instead of one custom box.

Yeah we'll see which option I end up going with based on the final number of decks. If we finish with under 120 decks, I can probably fit it all in one box. If we have to do two different shipments and each of them in a $55 box (+ tax & insurance ) then may as well ship in one custom box. Again, it's too early to tell but we are for sure looking to at least $100 for shipping.

Status updates:

I have receive a lot of shipments. I will be posting a video that highlights all the donations once all shipments are received.

For those of you that sent shipping help, thank you! It was an unexpected surprise, and so was the gift for me (my jaw dropped). So far we have about 10% of the shipping expenses raised.

However, I will let you know tomorrow and Saturday if your shipment arrives.

Alright i will ship a second Parcel on Monday, and i am confident i sent it to the right address because i handed the women your address and the package and said, "I need this shipped here."

*important notice* I don't have any more gold dragon backs so i am sending a signed fultons clip joints in its place.

Can you put substitute decks temporarily for Johns decks just so we can get a weight on the whole package?

You're very welcome Carlo.  I can not imagine what you , your family, and your friends have been through.
It was my pleasure to be part of this, and I hope you enjoy the decks as much as you enjoyed your last collection.  I think a lot of us here would love to see some unboxing videos if that's possible.

Take care Carlo,

Hey Carlo, I can't wait to get this shipment to you. There are some real amazing items in there.

I'm waiting on a couple final shipments and when they arrive we will begin fundraising for the shipping fees. Like Jay said, shoot an unboxing video if you can. I don't think anyone here cares for getting credit for what they did, but we all do want to see your reaction when you go through all the items.

All the best, and take care.

Carlo, I for one am itching to see you unboxing all that stuff - and I want to see facial reactions and not just pictures of the cards!  You've been through hell I'm sure, and even with this gift we're giving you I wouldn't trade places with you.  I'm just glad we're giving you hope and inspiration to complete your midterms.  (It's OK if we see you crying on the video - any one of us would do the same and there's no shame in it!)

We don't expect you to pay us back one bit.  Just pay it forward to the next poor soul who ends up in a worse position than you're in.  I for one thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you and to feel good about making a difference in one person's life.

I think that they made a mistake - Bicycle - because, if I am not mistaken, about 180 decks were sent by people from Aether Cards, UC, and some other companies, as well as many decks in packages by Ellusionist and T11 and D&D.

After I contacted T11, they teamed up with USPCC to send that package.

This still all stems from the movement on these forums.  This is a great community we are all a part of.

What USPCC did is by no means a "mistake". Helping someone in need out is never a bad deed nor should it be looked down upon. I do, however, find it interesting that no credit is being given to Jay who actually did 100% of the legwork. Jay convinced people to donate, Jay brought this to the attention of T11, and the result? The companies use it as a means to good PR. Like it or not, the good folks on here and on UC are the real amazing members of the community.

To everyone that participated, I hope you know that no one in the community that matters actually gives credit to USPCC or T11 for this. They did a great job restoring the collecting, but they were miles behind what all of you did. It makes me proud to be a part of a community with such wonderful people in it.

Right now I am waiting on one last package, and then we can start fundraising for shipping!

Honestly, I'm not looking for credit.  I consider this a 100% group effort.
It did irk me a bit that USPCC didn't mention the playing card community as a whole.  A lot of amazing companies/people were involved in this.

75 decks is impressive though lol

I hope Carlo can make enough room for all these decks.

Even so, it would have been nice to get mentioned.  But hey, it's a corporate website used to promote said corporation, so they want the spotlight on their good deed.  We know what we did, and that's just fine.

We got mentioned... Mentioned to Carlo, who knows what each and every member contributed... + another 75 from USPC??? Can you imagine the collection this kid is going to have??? I'm sure he'd take his original collection back and no typhoon, but my goodness... What was the total count from all the Discourse & UC members plus the 75 from USPC and all the other companies that participated???

I'm going to be 100% honest right now. I have been in and out of the hospital the past month for various amounts of time for various different things, *I have a heart condition that was dormant up until last month*, I gave the package to my brother to send it but apparently he never did, *he is lazy*, so i will be shipping the package tomorrow because that is the one day i don't have a set schedule  for my tests. Once again Alex, Jason, and Aetherians, i am so sorry for my delay, if i would have known this would happen to me i would not have contributed.

oh guys,, there is something i wanna talk about,, some guy commented recently on my -death of a collection- video.

it hurt me a lot,,,

i knw the number of people who lost their lives,, but i want to assure u all,, i looked after my fellow cagayanons first,,

before i even shot that video,, i helped out in our university, volunteered to repack goods for those affected,,,
i was a victim, yet i still had the heart to help out..

i wanna thank u all again,, from the bottom of my heart,,^^_ let this new collection not only be a collection of playing cards,, but a symbol that ,,even us magicians collectors and cardists from around the world can help out those who needs it the most, even if they are complete strangers,,

i will also dedicate this collection to the city,,, in memory of those that never knew what hit them,, thank u all again

Hi Carlo

I do not think mourning your lost card collection takes anything away from the deeper losses that have happened with a disaster like this. It is not possible for sympathetic bystanders to replace lives and homes, but at least we can help a survivor, a member of this community, regain a small but important part of their life. There will always be bitter individuals who try to rain on you. Shake it off and enjoy your new collection.

Perhaps, if any of the decks are not what you would have chosen for yourself, you could pass them on in the same spirit with which they were given.

Thank you for the videos, looking forward to seeing the rest! :D

Hey guys, an update:

The decks are ready for shipment. I'm going to get an exact quote from the USPS this week, and then start fundraising. The fundraising will take place in a separate thread on here, and the sooner the money is raised the sooner we can get these decks out there!

Carlo... I agree with Dazzleguts... And as he said, if anything was not exactly what you were looking for and you'd like to pass, I sent you my address, so feel free to send any overflow my way...  Still looking for some Bicycle Garden Cages and Jerry's Nuggets (kidding)...  I got six coming at you... But really... it is clear that although this is a major undertaking on all of the card collectors involved, it is dwarfed by the severity of what occurred in your country... That being said, may the cards offer some happiness to you in the midst of all the sadness and uncertainty...

Hey guys, I got my quote from USPS today and it was not a pleasant price to hear for Carlo's relief package. We need to raise $250 (this is after the few donations I've already received) to send the package out. Everything is packed and ready to go with about 120 decks.

I urge anyone with some extra cash lying around, to donate it via PayPal to me so I can get this package on its way. I strongly believe that if we can raise well over a $1000 worth of playing cards for the guy, we can collect 25% of that to ship it out.

Right now I will just be posting this thread, but tomorrow I will throw up a contest on Facebook to promote the donations as well.

To donate, all you have to do is send the money to my personal PayPal account: spektralex@gmail.com Please, add in a note for what the donation is for so I can calculate how much we have left to raise quickly.

Please take into consideration the 5-10% of fees that PayPal charges (I don't know the exact number, which is sad because I've been using it for years!)

If you want to avoid the fee, send cash (USD) or check to the following address:

AetherCards
4895 E Russell Rd. #205
Las Vegas, NV 89120
UNITED STATES

100% of the money raised is going straight to the shipping. I'm not taking a dime out of this for myself, and if we somehow manage to raise more, I will use the extra cash to purchase him some more decks, or upgrade the shipping to get there faster, or heck just include the money in the package itself to compensate whatever customs fees he has to pay.

Please spread the word about the fundraiser to people you know. Every dollar helps.

And for anyone wondering why I just don't front the money, it's because I'm actually not that rich, and since I'll be paying a similar amount when I ship out my Vortex care package to him, I'd rather not be short an entire month's worth of rent as a result.

As for shipping method, this is the cheapest possible way to ship. The decks take up about three large priority mail packages, which is around $260 after taxes and would probably murder the guy with custom's fees when he receives them.

I'll update the amount raised once or twice each day. :)

Thank you very much for showing that together we can do twice what USPCC and Theory11 combined can, and then some. This community is easily one of the greatest that I have ever been a part of.

Don't forget that we should send Carlo some funds in advance to help him cover the import duties he'll be stuck with.  And if there's a little extra cash, so what?  Send him that, too!  Seriously, I can easily imagine there's a need for it where he's living right now, and I doubt that his playing card collection was the only thing that he lost in the disaster.

I'll pony up in a few minutes, after I collect on a PayPal invoice I'm about to send.

Hey guys.

I've been chatting with Carlo off and on through FB the last few weeks.

And he told me the customs fees he's been having to pay.  He's received a few different packages varied in size from all over the world.

EVERY package has had the same customs fee.  But the good news is that is was only 40pesos per package, around $1 USD.

This was very surprising to me... some of these packages were pretty big...
T11 = 75 decks
Ellusionist = 48 decks

Not sure how many decks are in the package we have.

I'll be throwing some $$$ into the paypal later today or tomorrow.

Thanks again Alex for organizing the shipping effort, and thanks to everyone else for the overwhelming support.

Hmm, I tried searching but the only topic that comes up is this thread. A google search didn't help either. What is this?

Here you go, this thread explains the situation very well.

I don't know what shipping option the $250 quote was for.  But if the $250 target is too high, I'd like to suggest the the USPS flat rate large box.  It can hold about 70 decks and it ships anywhere in the world for $61.  Two of those boxes should cover the 120 decks for Carlo, and come in at under $125.

Also, a big thank you Alex for organizing this effort!

With packing material and the other stuff he's receiving (it's not just decks) it takes three boxes, and tax + insurance on each one separately is way more money.

The woman at USPS told me this was the cheapest option, and it includes tax and insurance on the entire package.

That reminds me, I should update the % raised.  :)

Hey Alex

I just chipped in 40USD towards the shipping.  The paypal might show up under my wife's name Kim.

Alright people.. let's get this done!!!  Give what you can!

I got this idea. I don't know if you think it's worth it or not, but anyways, I think it's worth a try. Maybe whoever donates for the shipping of the package gets to see a picture of the decks Alex will be sending in. Maybe this would give an extra bonus for people to contribute!

I donated $50 towards shipping a couple weeks ago.  Wish we could get all the money faster so we could get this package to Carlos.

It's funny... At first everyone was like, "What a tragedy" and everyone sent cards... Then like everything else in the world it was onto something else (with our five second attention spans)... Then when everyone saw Carlos with a  dream list of the most incredible decks in the world (literally) and dozens of decks from vendors and dozens more decks from USPCC, people turned their head and said, "Why the hell should I give any more money? Carlos has it all..."  But the fact is that he doesn't... His home and family's and friends homes were wiped out and destroyed... The cards are a grand gesture, but he still doesn't even have most of them... I'll admit... I even said damn, I'd like to have some of those cards (turning a little green) and figured I'd sent some decks and already paid for shipping on those so I was done... However, I'm going to be sending out a few extra $ for shipping to Alex as well so Carlos can receive his decks already (It's been two months)... So if you have already sent decks - another $5 or $10 is not something you would even feel... Or if you haven't sent decks, just send Alex $5 or $10 so he could get the package over to Carlos already... Too much work has been put towards this already for it to fizzle out and just sit stagnant... You'd be surprised how quickly the $ would add up if everyone just shot over $5, $10, or more $ to Alex... Sending some $ over to you now Alex...

However, one request Carlos... It's nice seeing your unboxing video because it is meaningful, however fast forward or ditch the photoshoot during the video and please explain why you are always being a cat and saying meow, meow and such... Thanks, J.

Another thing that you failed to account for is that the flat-rate Priority Mail boxes may be "if it fits, it ships, up to 70 pounds" in the US, but the weight restrictions are much lower on Priority Mail International.  I think even if the whole collection did fit in only two large boxes, we'd blow the weight limits right out of the water.

JMrock made a very good point in his moving speech.  I already contributed.  If all you can spare is one or two bucks, that's one or two bucks closer to the goal than we were before.  No one wants you to break the bank on this - just bend it a little.  If you're literally sending that small of an amount, mailing the bills would be easier than dealing with a money order - just wrap it in some paper so it can't be seen through the envelope.

While it wouldn't be impossible for Alex to exchange foreign currency into US dollars in Las Vegas, I'm sure that he's busy enough with the entire process of getting this project off the ground IN ADDITION TO running AetherCards, the Discourse, riding herd on USPC to get the Vortex deck into his hands already, working on his next design...you see where I'm going with this.

It would be best to exchange the currency to dollars before sending it, as I see it.  Alex, if I'm wrong, feel free to butt in and correct me.  Short of that, you could have him invoice you for your donation amount through PayPal.

You're right about the lower international limit, most international shipping I've done with these boxes is limited to 20 pounds.  Fortunately, if you're just mailing playing cards that's just about the weight of a full box.   Unfortunately, Alex mentioned there were other items as well that might take up more space and require additional boxes.

If you're cash strapped but have extra decks laying around, you can still help with the shipping funds.  Alex bought some decks from me the other week, and this weekend I sent his payment back to him as a shipping donation.  Thanks for the contribution Alex ;)

The other items aren't really larger than the decks, they just need to be packed very carefully with lots of padding. International shipping is no funny business, they toss those packages around like they're dirt.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Not much is left, so whatever you can find, please send it.

The best way to thank us, Carlo, is to pay the good deeds forward if you ever end up in such a position that allows you to. Perhaps a year, five years, or 25 years from now you'll be in a position to do a lot of good for someone. Do that, and that's more thanks than at least I could ever ask for.

Take care, and congratulations on your graduation!

Ha - that's what I get for estimating %.

We're about $10 under the cost, but I'll fill in the gap myself and ship this out ASAP. I am actually receiving Vortex decks very, very soon, so I want to throw in my contribution in the package as well and (obviously) I'll pay for any shipping differences as a result.

Thank you to everyone that donated, and Linguist, thank you for your very generous donation as well. I'm fairly certain Carlo is going to be doing an unboxing, so keep an eye out!

Carlo, if you are reading this, I have a couple of questions:
1) Will you be able to post a link to the second part of your unboxing video (with the theory11 and ellusionist decks)?
2) Will you be able to post this unboxing?
3) Will you be able to cross out the addresses of the senders?
Thx,
Nathan

Ah, good, so my donation got through. I was a bit worried it hadn't. PayPal is very tempremental with me and I chose 'instant bank transfer' which doesn't show up on my bank account very well. I've learned to choose 'credit/debit card' instead which comes off straight away. But, it doesn't seem to matter to the receiver, so that's good!

Glad I could be of help. I came here too late to donate any decks, so hopefully paying some for shipping makes up for it. Looking forward to the unboxing!

Now that the Vortex decks have arrived, I'm hoping you could send out that package by the end of the week.

This all started on Jan 11th, it would be nice to get it all finished  :D

Ha! I knew it!

Anyway he must still be very pre occupied with the vortex.
I really do hope that there would be some progress before he disappears on the 16th onwards.
We wouldn't want him to be all like:

But yeah I hope Alex sees this soon. It would be a shame for the relief package to take too long to arrive. ^-^

@Carlo hang in there. :D

Sorry guys. When I post here, I basically randomly click 1+ topics per day and scan through them, as well as any support topics that pop up in OAC.

As some of you may know, when you ship from the US, you cannot get a tracking number internationally that tracks it outside of the US itself unless you purchase express mail. Well, that costs quite a bit extra but after talking through it with CBJ we decided that's a better option than insuring the package for $1,000-2,000 and wiring Carlo money if it gets lost. Not only does the insurance claim take months to go through, but I think it kind of defeats the purpose of what we are doing. There are countless better places we could have all invested $2,000 into, but not a single better place I can think of that deserves $2,000 worth of cards.

I am also repacking the package. While shipping out the first Vortex decks I learned a thing or two about making sure no damage comes to the contents while still maximizing space in the box. It's now lined with bubble wrap and then stuffed in every empty crevice that is left over.

It's a bit late but I don't think that will change how absolutely thrilled Carlo will be when he receives it.

@Lara: That rage comic is all too true. No D3 for me yet, though. I have to ship about 30 more package by its release and then a glorious week off to indulge in the game and spend some time with my family and girlfriend.

You guys can once again thank CBJ for alerting me through FB and keeping tabs on things.

Just for the record, anything above and including a medium flat rate box, has tracking all the way, not just express mail. That means, medium and large flat rates and anything which is not flat rate priority has door to door tracking.
Thanks!

Also, Just because the package has door to door tracking doesn't mean it can't get lost or damaged. You should probably still get insurance.
Thanks!

That is simply not correct. I send medium and large flat rate boxes all the time and they have tracking all the way. Here is an actually tracking number from a medium box I sent last month: CJ464925415US

See for yourself.
Thanks!

This package isn't being shipped flat rate. That's first of all. Second of all, Don is correct, when shipped with anything aside from Express, signature confirmation is NOT available. The post office has confirmed this to me countless times. Tracking outside of the US depends solely on the country. It varies, and certain places do not update while others do.

It's silly to say otherwise considering I have countless package tracking numbers that do not have anything after it hits US customs.

Glad you got the package out. I never said that any item comes with signature confirmation for overseas delivery. I also could not find where Don said that either. What I said again is: Flat rate large and medium boxes and priority mail packages not flat rate, have tracking all the way, period. That is right from USPS's website.

I am sure what you are talking about is a small flat rate box or a flat rate envelope.

Here is what I posted at UC a few days ago, with the info right from USPS"s website:

Priority Mail International Flat Rate service lets you send the Large and Medium Flat Rate boxes up to 20 lbs, and the Flat Rate Envelopes and Small Flat Rate Priced Boxes, up to 4 lbs, to over 190 countries, all for a low Flat Rate.

Plus, you’ll save when you ship online.

Includes delivery status information with our Track & Confirm tool**

Here's the exclusion:

** Not available for Priority Mail International Flat Rate Envelopes or Small Flat Rate Priced Boxes.

If door to door tracking wasn't available on the other products they wouldn't specifically be excluding flat rate envelopes and small flat rate boxes

You are also wrong about the insurance. You do not have to declare the same amount as the insurance. How do I know that? I actually made a mistake on a package total. It was suppose to be $299.99 but I accidentally declared the value at $29.99. The package got lost and we got paid the full amount.

I am just trying to help save everyone some money and get the package out as soon as possible. That is all I am doing. I don't think anyone's behavior is incredulous here, all they wanted was an update.
Thanks!

I think what is really important here is to realize that the package has now been sent. While there may have been some concerns about the length of time it has taken to ship the package and some of the confusion about the best way to send it may have been from Alex's inexperience with sending a lot of packages overseas, Alex still did donate his time.

I would image keeping track of all those decks and then packaging everything securely and sending it out, does take some time. Could it have gone out quicker? Sure even Alex has said this. But lets remember that the package is on its way and Alex did donate all his time, so I would personally like to say:

Thank You to Alex and I can not wait for the unpacking video from Carlos to be uploaded.
Thanks!

I never said it would be flat rate. The amount of decks we sent him don't fit in the biggest flat rate boxes and it would take two packages to ship them. That means more customs fees for Carlo and a very slightly higher shipping fee for me since I would still be shipping Express and not Priority (sorry guys, when I dropped off his package I confirmed again that Priority doesn't track outside US borders. This may be false, but I do have shipments that have no "arrival" scan at their destination, so as always, better safe than sorry).

Can't wait to see the unboxing video. :D

I think I have broken the code regarding this discrepancy between those who claim Priority Mail (at least some levels of it) have tracking even in international deliveries and others (including USPS clerks) who say only Express Mail has tracking.

Now this probably isn't really news to many, but it helps to have it spelled out for others. This actually came up when I had my wife take a media mail parcel to the Post Office to have it mailed without a prepaid label. I told her to get tracking for the package. She told me later that the clerks informed her that only Delivery Confirmation was available for the parcel, not tracking. I told her that I understand that, but it isn't really any different because I use Delivery Confirmation numbers to "track" packages within the U.S. regularly. I'm sure most of us do. When you go onto the USPS website, you put in your Delivery Confirmation number in the blank space labelled Track and Cofirm.

Technically, there is a difference between TRACKING and Delivery Confirmation service. With TRACKING, the parcel MUST be scanned at acceptance by USPS and again when delivered. There are generally more scans than that as the parcel moves along, but the only REQUIRED scans are at acceptance and delivery.

With Delivery Confirmation, the only REQUIRED scan is at delivery. USPS doesn't have to scan it at acceptance or at other spots along the delivery route. In general, they do multiple scans, but they are NOT REQUIRED to do them.

Thus, there is merely a slight difference in TRACKING vs. Delivery Confirmation. In your real-world experience, you won't usually see that difference. Nearly everything I send out is scanned in at my local post office except for media mail packages. They are usually scanned in at the regional processing center.

In any event, we generally really only care about Delivery Confirmation with overseas parcels since we usually aren't concerned that they will be lost in the U.S. Thus, Priority Mail is generally the more cost-effective method, but that may not always be the case. Individual cases may be different.

I hope that helps.

Here is a link with some info for those who want to research it.

Perhaps I can put this to rest once and for all... I was at the Post Office today and had a friendly chat with the Postmaster (the person who runs the entire show)... He explained it very simply...

As of today, May 23, 2012, when sending a package internationally, the ONLY way to get tracking information, including delivery confirmation, is to send a package express mail... PERIOD

When sending a package flat rate - small, medium, or large, the package is designated a tracking number, but it is only guaranteed to be used up until the package leaves the country... The package may say 'LaGuardia Airport..." etc...   This lets you know that the package left the country successfully... Once it leaves this country it is entirely up to the receiving country as to whether or not they wish to scan or update the status of a package... Many countries do not, but some do... Many countries will only post when the package is delivered, and some do not at all... The bottom line is that there is absolutely no guarantee that the package is tracked from the sender to the recipient unless you are using express mail... -J.

That's interesting jmrock. Did the Postmaster say whether this was a new policy/condition or simply a more appropriate description for international delivery as it has been practiced for the past several years? If Priority Mail has been "downgraded" in it's service, without any delivery confirmation for international parcels, then it is likely many sellers will pull out of international sales due to the high cost to ship using Express Mail. I think it would be likely than a great many international customers would refuse to pay Express Mail rates thus shrinking the exports in general from the U.S., and particularly impacting our card-buying friends in other countries.

That is interesting since I have never had a package that was sent large or medium flat rate box internationally that does not have tracking. I will keep my eye on it and see if there is any changes to the systems. Thanks for the update.!
Thanks!

So I guess it is going to depend on who you talk to. I just called our local postmaster and he confirmed what is on the website. Medium, large flat rate and priority which is not flat rate, have tracking all the way on international orders except the small flat rate box and the flat rate envelope. This is exactly what it says on the USPS website.

Why doesn't it surprise me we are getting different answers from different people who work for the government? I think, as always, you should ship packages the way you are most comfortable with, so you do not have any problems. I will continue to ship large and medium flat rate boxes and I will continue to expect tracking all the way until it no longer happens.

Hopefully they will actually figure out what they are doing so they don't lose another 8 billion dollars this year.
Thanks!

Go figure... Conflicting information at the USPS... I will tell you, this is the only reason I don't ship internationally on eBay... If you ship priority, and the accepting country does not track or confirm delivery of the package and the recipient claims he did not receive it, eBay and Paypal side with the recipient and the seller ends up with neither the goods, nor the $...  Express is too expensive... I explained to my local postmaster what was written here and he stood by his initial statement - "It's up to the country accepting the package as to whether or not they wish to track through the point of delivery..."   So both our postmasters seem to be at an impasse... I would like further clarification... Thus, I will be researching this further...

I am pretty sure either FEDEX and/or UPS delivers, medium and large flat rate boxes internationally. That is why they are tracked all the way. I can tell you we have shipped to most countries in Europe, Asia, and South America plus to Canada, Mexico, Australia and have not had any issues about getting tracking on those packages. It isn't just a few packages, over the last 5 years, we have probably sent 2,000- 3,000 medium or large flat rate boxes internationally. I can not remember any that did not have tracking all the way.

Usually if a package is big enough to go in a medium or large flat rate box, I will add insurance to cover the contents if it gets lost. Remember, a package could still get lost at some point and tracking would only be to the point it got lost.

I have to go with what my postmaster said, what is on USPS's website and my own personal experience here.
Thanks!

Apparently Carlos' package has arrived, but sadly he does not have the $25 (twenty-five dollars) to pay customs to receive the thousands of dollars of decks of playing cards sent to him...  Good luck getting the $25 together Carlos... It's quite a worthwhile expenditure, given the list of decks contained in the package...

Hats off to Alex and CBJ for putting this together and keeping track of the decks and getting them shipped... Hats off to everyone else who donated decks so that Carlos may have one of the most Kick @$$ Collections in the world...

Yes, Thanks to EVERYONE!  It is an amazing little community we have here.

Here's what Carlo wrote at UC
"Guys! update...

I skipped a few hours from work last monday to check the status of the package.

IT HAS ARRIVED!  I REPEAT! IT HAS ARRIVED!

I have seen it and it has arrived on schedule.

But here is the problem.  Customs are asking like 1000pesos (roughly around 25$) for fees.  and sadly i dont have that kind of money right now.

Im trying to see if i can borrow money from some where and get it home safe but that is kind of difficult to.

Dont worry guys! ill find a way!  Thnx again!  if everything turns out great, the unboxing will be shoot on sunday^^"

I've already sent Carlo a message on FB.  The Fees are taken care of, I just need to find out how to get it to him.

So... we should see a video Sunday/Monday

:)

Again... thanks

Hey Nathan.

I take the photos I want to show, and load them on my Photobucket account.

Then I right click on each pic, and "view image info".. copy the address and paste it using the button available when you're making a post (it looks like the mona Lisa)

I do that for every pic.. very time consuming.. but you can post tons of pics

I hope this make sense

I'm not sure if he's doing the entire unboxing... However, there's a new guy on eBay selling many similar decks under the name "Carlito Meowito"  Seems suspicious... Sheriff Don, round up a posse and check em out...

I dunno, I feel like it's understandable. He had a lot of duplicates in there, and I wouldn't be surprised if he sold off the Vortex decks (I don't remember how many I sent but it was at least a brick).

He never asked for us to send them to him. He may need money, space, what have you. I think he's entitled to use them, display them, sell them, eat them, burn them or whatever. :P

Hey

i chatted with Carlo, and I found out why there is a delay with video... His memory stick from his videocamera kept showing an error.  He took it to a shop and they recovered the files. He will post the video soon!

I asked him if he had an Ebay account.. And he said no.

Jmrock, could you post the link to the Ebay seller?

Guys... "Carlito Meowito?"  Really? Doesn't anyone remember how Carlos kept saying meow after everything he wrote like ten times he'd post "meow"... Where's Digipunk when you need him?  What the H ever happened to him? Sorry I didn't catch the inquiries sooner, but there's no eBay link for Carlos... The only eBay link I have right now is to the greatest sale for both Modern & Vintage Cards Ever!!!

Sorry to cross thread... Really... Won't happen again...  ;)

Wow JMRock.. I normally have great respect for you..

But to hijack a thread about a care package that the community all came together for.. to promote your own auctions.. LOW CLASS.

Disappointed ...

Knock it off CBJ... The majority of the post was about Carlos... After three requests for the eBay page, which was just a little joke, I gave mine instead... Not only was I one of the first contributors of decks,  but I gave $ as well towards the shipping... So I dropped a plug... If you thought it distasteful then my apologies...But "LOW CLASS" all capitalized and everything... come on now... I know its getting hot out and all, but you need to cool it...

Hey guys,

So, here's the short story...

-Carlo videotaped the unboxing.
-Later when he tried to remove the video, it said the file was corrupt
-He took it somewhere to recover the file (the guy said it was possible)
-the guy was wrong, and the file was lost forever

I've asked Carlo to at least make a collection video.  Hopefully he gets to it this week.

And here's Carlo's FB profile

Just a quick bump, as I have heard some folks were looking for this topic.  It's long, combining three topics together, but it's a great story about the crew teaming up to help a man recover from a serious natural disaster and restore his collection to even better than it was before.

It's worth reading.
