As much as I hate to admit it... Mass appeal is a factor that shouldn't be overlooked. The art can be good, but if the theme isn't specifically appealing to me, and the creator isn't someone I've seen around before it's already an uphill battle at that point sometimes. Now if the art work is AMAZING then that's enough usually right there.

For me personally, the tuck case and card backs play a HUGE role in selling me on the deck. Sure the face cards matter, but the amount of time someone puts into creating all the custom faces compared to the time spent on the card back and the tuck is typically out of proportion to the amount of sway the tuck and backs have on me.

Artificial scarcity can be a compelling factor in the right circumstances.

Another factor that could cause an otherwise great deck of cards to only do mediocre on Kickstarter or fail is MARKETING. I know this one can be hard, but honestly building buzz before launch and prepping whatever fan base you have will lead to a better turn out at launch. Also, for ANY Kickstarter, the amount raised in the first 1-24 hours is a big indicator for those on the fence. This is true for Kickstarters or stores and restaurants. If the place is dead or has a dead opening then it doesn't attract as many new people. If the joint is hopping then it draws in other potential customers.

That's my off the cuff 2 cents. Probably not worth much!  :-\

These face cards are great, and I like the theme. My first gut react was to NOT like various arrangement of the pips, but after like two seconds I realized that it doesn't bother me. I thought it would, but it doesn't.

Then I was curious about the back design so I had to go check out the Kickstarter.

Thanks for sharing this one. I probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

I especially like the tucks and the jokers. Nice looking deck in general. I always dig the uncolored sketches with a splash of color for the pips.

bookmarked!

Welcome! You've come to the right place.

More people means more activity, good quality posts from new poster would go a long way to spur activity. I myself struggle to find relevant things to post about very often.

Welcome aboard Lee!

That sounds like a very enviable collection, makes me feel like a total slacker.

I'll definitely take a look at your instagram, love seeing pictures of other peoples collections.

You sound like a great addition to the community here.

Thanks for sharing, it was a good read. I enjoyed the stories, and they were well paced throughout the article. I was a little worried at the start as the writing itself seemed childish in structure and prose, but it hit it's stride well enough and was a fun read.

I'll stick to my standard craps tables and leave the advantage play to the big boys.

Hey Bucky! Welcome to the forum.

I'm new to all this too, and only have a few decks in my collection.

I've slowed WAY down on my pace when it comes to purchasing decks for my collection. I have no idea how big the average collection around here is, and size isn't everything obviously with the quality or rarity of the decks in a collection mattering much more. Your "few decks" could easily out do many collections. When I imagine other collectors' hoard I imagine hundreds and hundreds of decks but I actually have no idea the average collection size.

I myself have what I consider a very small collection still. I collect modern decks and do so sporadically. If you count unique decks I only have a little north of 50 decks. If you count multiples/repeats then sure it's closer to 150 decks.

I collect because I like the art and because honestly collecting things is almost a compulsion sometimes.

That being said, seeing a deck I just got going for 10x what I paid is fun but also the rare exception and that price won't stay there. These weird demands ebb and flow with so many factors.

I still have a deck or two I wish I'd thrown up on eBay when they were at their peak. Oh well, love them anyways because they are my preciouses.

I will also say that in addition to all the things already said (which I ditto, and agree with), I've encountered many contributors/backers who complain about how the selection of perks (tiers) and how the checkout process works on Indiegogo.

So basically while Indiegogo acts more like a store in that they charge you right away, there is no shopping cart like an online store so when a user picks a perk to purchase they complete that checkout and if they want to also get ANOTHER perk they then have to select that perk and complete the checkout process AGAIN.

This can be very redundant depending on how you structure your crowdfunding campaign. I've had someone email saying they would have bought more had they not had to go through the check process a dozen times. One could also argue the other direction, that this is a cool feature since backers/contributors CAN pick more than one tier/perk whereas on Kickstarter you can only back one tier per KS account, but from my experience on both platforms this seems as more of a hindrance then a feature.

Yet another side effect of this whole checkout process is that with Indiegogo if a new tier is released mid-campaign or a new stretch goal, you can't manage your "Perk" and change it to a different tier/perk. While with Kickstarter you can easily click the manage my pledge and change to a higher or lower tier and adjust your $ accordingly. (Yes you can contact the creator and work something out manually to change it, but that can be a nightmare for the creator(s) to keep track of, especially in larger campaigns).

Introduce Yourself / Hey Everyone, I'm a Collector

Hey Everyone, Bucky here, I'm a card collector from central Wisconsin. I'm still fairly new to all this, or at least I think of myself that way.
Started collecting decks of playing cards in early 2013. I got into it mainly due to some amazing decks I saw being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, and I maybe went a little crazy buying decks.

Favorite card designers/artists are probably Uusi and Jackson Robinson.

Thinking of getting into cardistry just for another hobby, probably won't be very good at it.
