ThanksTom, that was my opinion also. American, circa 1880 but I didn't think of the game package angle.

HELP:  Can any of you mavens out there help me with even the country of origin?  The cards measure 1 7/8" X 1 1/2" and are on thick stock.  There is no writing on any of the cards but I thought the style of the courts might be a clue. Thanks for any help!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / POTTER & POTTER AUCTION
« on: July 08, 2014, 09:14:48 AM »
Overall the Potter & Potter was vey successful.  Unfortunately, I don't have any photos to share at the moment but perhaps later.

The souvenir decks were very weak with many lots being passed.  Perhaps this was my fault as I should have grouped more decks together.  Many decks even starting at $25 did not receive an opening bid.  This would be an excellent category for a beginning collector with a limited budget.

On the other hand prices for early American and non-standard decks were quite strong although there were a few bargains to be had in that area.  The foreign decks also seemed to fare well.

Ephemera, trade cards and advertising related to playing cards also did well with some prices sky rocketing to new records.  All the prices can be viewed on the Potter & Potter website: potterauctions.com.

Prices for the Devil & Card pattern by Royal Bayreuth did well overall with a few pieces selling in the thousands. The playing card porcelains brought average prices and some people got some real bargains.

There has not been a really good playing card auction in the U.S. since the Lenny Schneir auction and I think this auction has laid the groundwork for Potter & Potter to become the dominant player in the gambling and playing card area.  The next auction will be next May and I can promise you that I have already been given some fantastic lots in both the gambling and playing card areas.  If any of you have lots that you wish to consign please give me a call at 773-883-0073 to discuss. It's not to early!!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / COMPLETE DECK

Question of the day.  Why do deck listings on Ebay and elsewhere state that a deck is "complete" when it is missing a joker?  Not!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Russell & Morgan Letterhead
« on: April 21, 2014, 04:05:56 PM »
Could this be the earliest Russell & Morgan letterhead?  It dates from 1888 and introduces the Russell & Morgan price list for that year.  It is done in sepia with the iconic Russell & Morgan tiger.  One of the many pieces to be offered in the Potter & Potter "Devil's Picturbook" auction May 31st & June 1st.  Does anyone know of an earlier letterhead?

There will be a 1st, 2nd & 3rd edition available in the Potter & Potter Auction May 31st & June 1st.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Playing Card Advertising
« on: April 15, 2014, 01:16:30 PM »
Hello Everyone;

Thought I would give everyone a break from decks of cards and post a piece of playing card advertising which is often times rarer than the actual deck.  This piece advertises the "BEE" brand from NYCC and dates 1940-1950. It along with other playing card advertising and trade cards will be available in the upcoming Potter & Potter "Devil's Picture Book" auction May 31st & June 1st.

If any of you plan to attend the auction, there will be a wine & cheese preview party on Friday night May 30th.  Formal attire not required.  I will be signing copies of my book for those interested. Please let me know if you plan to be there as it will help us in ordering the wine, etc.  Come on Down!!!!

Good Morning;

Another interesting deck to be offered in the Potter & Potter auction May 30th.  This deck has one way courts and was used in the game of Faro.  It dates from around 1875 and the courts are very similar to Samuel Hart.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Jeu Des Grotesque
« on: March 27, 2014, 09:01:51 AM »
Good Morning:
Time for another unusual deck posting.  The French deck , Jeu des Grotesque 32/32, was first published in the early 19th century.  It was later reprinted from the original plates in the 1970's.  I have asked the experts that I know if there is anyway to tell the difference between the original and the reproductions and no one has been able to help me with any degree of certainty.

I finally decided to take it to a restoration facility in Chicago called Graphic Conservation who do museum quality paper restoration to find out if they could perhaps tell me the approximate age of the paper.  They wrote a report that they felt the paper was 19th century.  Unfortunately, they could not get any more specific than that without extensive (expensive) testing.  However, I am happy to know that they were indeed printed in the 19th century and are not a contemporary reproduction.  The deck is also from a collection that was put together prior to 1970. This deck will be in the Potter & Potter auction May 31st & June 1st.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Lawrence & Cohen
« on: March 18, 2014, 08:23:57 PM »
One of my favorite decks is the Lawrence & Cohen Illuminated - 1864.  The pips are surrounded by gold and the Ace of Spades is truly magnificent.  Others manufactured illuminated decks but this is the best.  Look for it for sale in the Potter & Potter Auction the last weekend in May.
