I love this deck.  The court art is amazing.  I'll have to clear space on my 'awesome' card shelf to make way for the whole series.  Also, I am super intrigued by the idea of a pluto surprise.  Nice work!

Thanks much!

Given how much interest I've seen so far, I doubt this will happen, but in the event it does I have some other options to get these decks produced. Worst case is I would refund backers for decks not produced but I think that will be very very unlikely at this point.

Thanks, Don—glad you like the series!

I think it's okay to offer the other decks in the series as rewards since they're part of a set and it's also what backers specifically asked for. I also made it very clear that the whole set won't be sent out until after the final campaign of the series.

Hey all,

In case you haven't heard, the next project in the Vanda Artists Series lineup launches today on Kickstarter (in about 6 hours from now).

This is the first deck of an 8-deck series called "The Planets" and it features planet #1: Mercury.

You can check out the campaign draft page at:

Playing Card Plethora / Polaris Equinox
« on: November 17, 2016, 12:31:57 PM »
Hey guys,

It's been a while since I launched a new Vanda deck and I've been toying with plenty of options. One idea that I'm very excited about is a new edition of the Polaris deck. Polaris solar and lunar are both sold out and I've gotten lots of very positive feedback on the Polaris designs in general.

Equinox represents the balance between night and day - a semi-annual occurrence when the two are equally represented. This deck takes a literal approach to dividing each card face into day/night and there will be both light and dark versions of the tuck and back designs. I've used a very bold color palette and application to make these cards very usable for game play and gorgeous for cardistry purposes as well.

The tuckboxes will feature embossing and holographic foil, a first for any Vanda deck.

I've got the design finalized though I'm curious to hear what you'd like to see in a Kickstarter campaign for this deck -- stretch goals, accessories (if any), etc...

Thanks!

I just realized that I hadn't yet started a thread for this new deck, so here goes...

Duel Playing Cards is a deck designed by Joelle wall and we'll be launching a Kickstarter campaign for it soon. The goal is to produce the red version of the deck and printing of the blue deck will be a stretch goal. These will be printed by USPC and I'm working on some other cool stretch goals / add-on items. If you have any requests/ideas for these items, please share :)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: REN - designed by David Goldklang
« on: June 19, 2015, 03:07:44 PM »
As you've pointed out, this design is a nod to some of the much older decks that were originally used to play Faro.

I did explore a number of minimalistic options for indices on this design, but ultimately decided to stick with the beauty of simplicity and really showcase the pips themselves. I've attached one example of indices that I experimented with and I'm still considering the possibility of an edition of Ren that uses indices and 4 colors...

Different decks have different strengths and weaknesses. Ren is great for cardistry and magic, and appeals to collectors and designers (and design enthusiasts). There are many decks out there (almost all of them) that do have indices, but as a designer I'm always looking at ways I can push the boundaries of what everyone else is doing while still creating work that I consider to be beautiful. The result is that every deck of Vanda cards is unique and really stands out from the crowd. I'm aware that the playability factor on this deck is low and I admit that I'm unlikely to use the Ren decks to play card games (we usually grab a deck of Mustache cards for that purpose), but I'm really excited to add these to my collection, and particularly looking forward to putting up an uncut sheet (which will look damn sexy, if I say so myself).  :D

Hey all,

I wanted to officially introduce you to a project I've been working on since I launched the original Vanda decks...

This deck is called "Ren" – a Swedish word meaning 'pure' or 'clean'. Minimalism never looked this sexy!
The idea behind this deck is to emphasize the natural beauty of the pips themselves and it takes inspiration from some of the very early decks of cards and their simple elegance, but with a modern touch.

More details and images to come soon...

Playing Card Plethora / Future Vanda projects - your input requested
« on: March 23, 2015, 01:36:44 PM »
Hey all,

As you may know, I have several projects in the works for future Vanda releases. I know what my preferences are and I'm really excited about some of the decks that are planned, but I'm also very interested to hear what you guys think. I feel it's important to get a sense of what you card-lovin' folks like, dislike, and dream about when you envision unpackaging a brand new tuck box. Feel free to answer the questions below or just share any free-form feedback you'd like.

Thanks!
-David

- What is your favorite Vanda deck released to date?
- What are your favorite elements in any of our current decks?
- What were you disappointed about in any of our released decks (in regard to design/print quality...not fulfillment/correspondence)?
- From our instagram feed (http://instagram.com/vandacards), what are you most excited about? and least excited about?
- What outrageous idea would you want the next Vanda deck theme to encompass?
- What else would you like me (as a designer) to know about you or the card collecting community in general?

I'm still not really clear what you mean...

Are you talking about adding a shape outline around the typographic design?

Also I should point out that the spot cards will have standard pip layouts but each small pip will be typographic...you'll see soon :)

22
@Don: Thanks! I have a new day job as a Senior Visual Designer for a startup in Palo Alto so that keeps me pretty busy, but I've also been working on a number of deck concepts in my free time. I hope to have lots of new and exciting stuff to show you guys this year :)

@Collector: I'm not quite sure what you mean by "add small planks"...can you elaborate?

Design & Development / VandaType deck - hand lettered typographic design
« on: January 08, 2015, 01:52:04 PM »
Hey guys,

I've been wanting to create a typographic deck since before I launched the original Vanda decks over 2 years ago and have finally decided what I want to do with it.

The deck will be created using hand lettering, then digitized and cleaned up a bit. Every pip in the deck will be typographic and each card will have a unique design with a different type style for each suit.

I've been inspired by Emmanuel's process of creating one card each week and will be following a similar timeline with this project. Every card will be laser cut in baltic birch wood at 5"x7" and they will be numbered sequentially in standard deck order. These unique wooden cards will be available for purchase along with the final printed decks.

You can check out weekly photos on the Vanda instagram feed (http://instagram.com/vandacards) and I'm planning to set up a blog with more info as well.

I think I'm happy with the layout of the pips and general structure for the card faces, but will welcome input on the back and tuck when we get to that point.
