Yeah - they don't digest very well...
I started collecting while still divorced and living in a bachelor apartment. Now I'm in a one-bedroom with my fiancee and her son. No pets, though I'd love to have a dog. I keep my future step-son out of my collection by allowing him supervised access to see the cards, impressing upon him the value and difficulty to replace them and providing him with enough decks of his own to keep him happy. He's got more now than he knows what to do with.
He did manage to ruin one deck, though - I was playing solitaire with a S&M v6 and I'd given him a Mindfreak magic set a few days earlier. One of the tricks in the Mindfreak kit involved using lipstick and making marks on a person's hands. He grabbed my hand while I was playing for reasons not known to me at the time and I didn't discover that he'd marked me with lipstick until it got all over the edges of the deck! S&M v6 was still a recent release (although sold out) so I was able to replace it for under $20 including sales tax.
Lalita now has that deck and uses it to create really cool-looking paper roses!
