This deck is great all the way. I'll agree with the basically insignificant critique from Helshawk. When seen side by side, the hearts and diamonds look a little off on the joker. I think that's partly because the red suits are "attached" to the jester's hat in a different spot than the black suits are. The hat (curling up vs. down) emphasizes it. Seen apart from each other, I don't notice it.

I agree that's the only rational conclusion. I wasn't expecting a joker and I was immediately upset that I had a "damaged" 2 of diamonds (much the opposite of someone writing a missing card value on a joker). I flipped through and found the cards in order, complete, with a 2 of diamonds. Whew.

I'm still interested in finding the original joker (or a <> 1902 De la Rue joker from a deck with these faces). I'm still treating this as my own mystery. When I get my carbon-dating results back, a second opinion from the handwriting analyst, and a response to my official query in the Queen's own hand, I'll let everyone know (in the off-topic section).

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / 1902 British Joker?
« on: January 12, 2017, 12:40:27 AM »
So here is a deck of De la Rue cards from King Edward VII's coronation, june 1902. I love the tiny indices and the quality, colorful printing on the backs. Let's talk about that joker, though. I found a one-off reference to jokers finally being "allowed" into French-style decks in 1902 (http://www.numericana.com/answer/cards.htm).

There are absolutely no indentations where the word Joker appears on the card. I'm lead to believe that the text might have been stamped on the card. (The line weight and ink coverage don't suggest handwriting; felt tipped pens weren't popular until the 1950s; who would both have ~and write on~ a spare 2 of diamonds on a card that was already 50 years old?

Does anyone have a De la Rue joker from 1902 or earlier?

Transparent and pure white are both non-printing.
Transparent means "do not print."
Pure white means "print something here: no amount of cyan, no amount of magenta, no amount of yellow, and no amount of black." That still leaves nothing printed.
In all cases that I can think of, both accomplish the same task.

Except...
If you are printing non-color (varnishes, foils, etc.), you'll often need to have transparency.
Transparent means "do not print."
Pure white (or any color or design) means "print something here" and the color doesn't matter. Varnishes and spot coatings are either on or off. This is masking as opposed to printing.

Your printing establishment knows these things and will prepare to print correctly.

If the background in your file is slightly off-white, whether it's grey or tan or pink, something will attempt to print. Light and/or subtle colors are different than what you'll see when working on the files, as your light colors are printing over stock of some color. No paper stock is perfect white.

EDIT: There are exceptions to these, of course... printing a design with white on a black shirt is an easy example. In your case, I don't think any number of exceptions will apply.

Received in Dallas, TX! I've mentioned this before, but 1 of these 2 is off to my sister's house to have her kids color and give back to me for Christmas!

I like bears, so I don't like the cranky chap with the axe much for wanting to smack the bear.

LOL!

I'll add my own emphasis on a couple things Fess mentions.

Poker needs immediately recognizable suits. (That doesn't have to mean absolutely standard.) I even find that the skulls (with three white areas) are more reminiscent of clubs than spades. The clubs are a shape on a stalk, much like a spade. If you have to tell us what shapes are what suits, as you did, they're not cards for poker.

Poker needs faces that have consistent margins across all cards. There's a bleed problem here with the aces. Looking at your ace of hearts, there's also a "dirt" smudge right on the edge significant enough that it's the same thing.

They're good looking cards! I really like the box, card backs, and illustration style. There's a lot that's good with this deck!

I know I sound picky and pedantic, but I'm not comfortable with the claim of "Poker Deck." These issues go away to some extent if they say "Playing Cards." I've backed plenty of decks I'd never use for poker.

Nice bit of cards here!
PM sent.

One down! Thanks!

I've got 2 sealed sets, so I'm hesitant to break one up. I feel like a jerk mentioning it, but want to acknowledge your post all the same.

Since I had good luck re:Norwood Uncut, I thought I'd throw this out there...

Does anyone have any of the Club 808 decks in surplus they'd part with at a good price? They come up $reasonably on eBay, but (thanks to life and work) I keep missing them.

I've been known to deal blackjack a few (hundred) times. For me personally, I need standard or near standard faces for recognition. I'd stumble trying to add these cards at a glance and players might, too. I don't think pulling cards from their short edges would be an issue, though. I like the deck and the shoe, but I'd never use them together.

This is a fun design. I think they'd look less authentic if they didn't bleed off the edge. That's hardly a thing, though, when each card back is different!

I wonder why they didn't die-cut the film perforations! Heheheh.

+1 KaiH

Received in good order, well packed, fair price.

(I had missed your reply to Don when I posted mine; I didn't mean to be redundant.)
I'll back this.

I want to give each of my nieces and nephews (and adult friends) these...to color and give back to me! I want them to color the boxes, too!

I really, really like these. If you can't find someone to offer an uncoated playing card stock, I'd be interested in them even if they were printed with a traditional printer (as opposed to a playing card company). Sure, they'll wear out quickly in either case. Sure, the crayon or colored pencil might smudge on the next card's back, but I'm not exactly going to wear them out bringing them to the poker table. Bonus points if you can find an opaque stock that could handle crayons, colored pencils, or markers without soaking / ruining the back design.

For me to give the kids, I think they're awesome. They function much like a coloring book.

For me, though, (and ~some~ of my adult friends  ;D ), I would prefer room for creativity beyond coloring. Thinking of traditional court cards, I'd like to be able to draw the their faces, crowns, or even their outfits and gear. I humbly suggest a more traditional design, less structured...and more looking "like people," as Don suggests.

Stretch goal idea - a less-structured second deck? A grown-ups version? Something like that?

I'm down for a couple decks if I have to use permanent markers. I'm down for six if the cardstock works with the crayons, colored pencils, and markers that my young nieces and nephews are allowed to use and already have. I'm down for a couple extra in a grown-ups version.

2¢.

They were up at bicyclecards.com for $20 for a long time "until sold out." I finally went to buy one after a couple weeks up in Canada and, of course, they sold out. I know I should have purchased sooner.

Anyone know where I can get one reasonably priced?

...and they come in red! I also really like these.

I don't mind the indices that much.

As a longtime poker player, though, what I won't do is play with a dark deck of almost any design, and certainly not these. The Jc and Qs (and even the Kd!) above have almost no significant contrast, especially if you're on a racetrack table near one of the ends. There's no immediate recognition even checking your hole cards where the cards are purposefully in shadow.

I like the similar, but different styles from one deck to the other though, and I've always been a fan of the scarabaeidae family. I'm down for a pair.

I've got nooks in the game room that I'm filling. Here's the top half of the first nook.

I'm doing some rearranging because I decided to try the Bee promo boxes up there. That idea is still up in the air.

Edit: I do effectively access them.  :)

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Cleaning/Restoring old cards?
« on: November 07, 2015, 05:03:31 PM »
I've tried to clean a few decks, but only when they have small dark spots from hand grime. When I don't foresee any risk, I very lightly use a fingernail, a used dryer sheet, or (rarely) a plastic razor blade. I leave the edges alone. I used to try a soft eraser, but I don't recall having luck with that.

"Sticky" is also a hard word to interpret here.

These 2 decks have sequential UPC numbers and the first 5 (73854) match USPCCo.

The Peanuts deck shows 2015. I'm assuming they're both new. I've seen them popping up on eBay.

Since I couldn't find the eBay deck retail anywhere, I decided to ask the seller. After all, that might be his product.

He told me, however, that he didn't know, but perhaps De La Rue. That led me to WWPCM British cards and I came across this after a while... Goodall 1880s. I think that's it.
