Playing Card Plethora / Re: VXD Mk1: Las Vegas Edition
« on: May 22, 2017, 11:06:13 AM »
I think Don is suggesting that, since they haven't been printed yet (we know they haven't been printed yet, as the funding hasn't been completed), there is time to make a change (if you want).

Depending on the current stage of production, it should be pretty easy to do (if you want).

I didn't say "You're a disrespectful America hater!" and Don didn't say "You've already printed, cheater!" The things we've said have been an attempt to be helpful, seriously.

Please continue to post. You have brought something new to our obvious area of interest and that's always welcome.

I can (of course) tell that the flag is rotated 90º. That's not how the flag should be displayed. The deck is Stars & Stripes, so I made the assumption your goal was somewhat patriotic.

Of the first 20 images on the link you sent me, 17 of them are different than yours. The image you chose to highlight was not from a US site. If the flag is open to interpretation, then I guess so. :/

I am proof that some people will notice this. Some who notice might take offense. I don't; some might.

Just bringing it to your attention.

I know this information might come too late, but I'll point out something that caught my eye right away.

Whether the stripes are horizontal or vertical, the star field on the US flag should always be on the top left. Your pips on the aces are backwards.

I have
Astronomy
Cigar
Club 808
Cobalt Luxe
Crimson Luxe
Espionage (foil)
Espionage (sideways)
Griffin
Joker
Jules Verne
Nightshade
Perspective
Speakeasy

I think the only ones I'm missing are Golden Luxe and Amber Stag.
Can you guess which one of these I can find pretty cheap?
Can you guess which ones I could have purchased, but decided to wait a week?

Can someone tell me if I'm missing any?

I have quite a few now, finding the best prices I could across a few months. I've been so sporadic across this time that I can't even tell you which I don't have! Thanks for the bump, though. I might list mine here in the next week.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: NY Consolidated Bee Deck Question
« on: April 24, 2017, 01:59:51 AM »
Here's how I understand some of the differences in what is a long-running and little-changed tuck box. Corrections and additions strongly encouraged.

The bottom of your tuck probably shows "Bee" Cambric Finish. On the front, below the words Reg US Pat Off, there's a moustache-shaped area with no text in it. Your guarantee card (if you have one) is likely to have Consolidated-Dougherty with a Cincinnati 12 address.

On slightly older decks than yours (but still in the 1940+ tax stamp era), the bottom of the tuck omits the word Bee and the moustache-shape shows Made in USA. The guarantee card shows Consolidated-Dougherty, but with a New York address.

On newer decks than yours, they removed the NYCCCo reference on the front of the box, the word Standard (or Bridge Size) took its place and the Made in USA made it back into the moustache area. The bottom still says "Bee" Cambric Finish. The guarantee card finally shows USPCCo. These decks (with and without barcodes) didn't change until they finally switched from  one-color tuck printing.

This is the only example I've seen of this box, so I had to have it.  Little Duke decks in near perfect tucks in a slide box.

Both are 52+J with matching back designs, although one deck has the early ace (1904), the other has the more recent ace (1909).

Guilty as charged! I came into a number of decks recently and got a good price on that last pair. The top 3 bidders were over $200.

I can't add much info. Here's what I know without any reference material handy. The norms for the standard run of Bicycle cards were Ivory and Air-Cushion for a long time, though I've got Bicycle decks that omit the finish type on the box altogether. High Finish, like Ivory, are smooth.

At some unknown point with the most recent of US tax stamps until another unknown point with USPCC blue stamps, there were High Finish. I have only seen Bicycle High Finish in the simplest box style -- the box printing is red and blue with some gold borders, the 4 edges show their finish, 808, Made in U.S.A., and The U.S. Playing Card Co. I'm not aware of Ivory Finish nearly that modern. I do have a tax-stamped open pair of HF as well in the exact same box. That does some narrowing down, but not much.

Right now, there is an opened Bridge Size High Finish deck on eBay for around $90. Is there a tax stamp or other reason you'd say your deck is 1953? All the High Finish Bicycle (wide) decks I've come across have appeared to be right around the 1965 tax cutoff, possibly into 1973? Other brands show this finish earlier.

I, too, would like more information. My guess is you have a gem.

I've been working on the box design (for the Fire Red deck) and am hoping for some feedback on the two design drafts below (I'm stuck on which one to finalise:))

Any thoughts you have are most welcome!

Both of these look really, really nice. I personally prefer the lower of the 2 images. (Maybe it's the weight of the white circle that slightly disconnects me on the first box. Dunno. Still like both a bunch!)

Who's doing the printing for this job?
The template indicates USPCC might be the choice of manufacturer. The claim on the bottom of the box that SVI manufactured them (and did so in Europe) certainly won't fly.

My 2¢ - Is this an SVI Group deck or is it an Egypt deck? SVI Group isn't a playing card brand, nor is it a business related to Egyptology, so I'll assume it's an Egypt deck. I can't think of any other cards where the designer or design group has their name featured so prominently. Artists don't sign or incorporate their name in the middle of their works. Wildly non-standard pips and missing indices also put this way, way out of reach for my interest.

Ignoring the thought of these as playing cards, the art and overall design aspects are really sharp. I could become interested in these if reworked.

Click on anyone's name (or choose yours by clicking "Profile" way up top on all pages). The page that comes up has "Profile Info" on the left (below the header).

I know you're dying to see all my posts.

Even with the word Gaol, these feel American to me. I found the other cards from their eBay listing. I feel like the English is American. It's not hard to find American copy and vocabulary like this on old postcards and in old advertisements. The campaign hats feel American. (I've just found, though, that some British troops (after seeing North American hats) wore them around or after 1890; see Wikipedia - Campaign Hat). I didn't find these, nor any similar, in Hochman either.

These are really, really nice! I shall defer, hopefully, to posts below.

I've got a pair of High Finish Rider Backs up for sale on eBay. This is the 2nd of 2 pair I'm willing to part with.

Find them here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/302256834953.

The auction ends tuesday, 28 march 2017. They're a little nicer than the first pair I sold last week.

Design & Development / Re: Feedback on card back?

To me (and maybe just me), the design is a little disorienting. You've got light line boxes sitting on heavy lines. There are 5 or 6 different line weights sitting right next to each other. I can't tell why the line weights are different. Looking at all the Bicycle backs (or Tally backs, or any others), the weights are consistent to an area or a border or necessary to the design.

(It looks like I'm laying on the floor looking at a domed ceiling with arched hallways going off in 4 directions with two pillars in each corner of the space. See it?)

The 3 is now a 3. That helps me.

Do what you like! There are a lot of rules that make cards that are good for everything. Almost everyone breaks some of them.

...but are still recognizable by the letters and signs placed at the top in the cards.

I looked at the pictures before reading your text and literally, my first thought was, "Is that a 3 or a 5?"
Overlay a 3 and a 5 and you get your 5. Hmmm.

My 2¢ -- I like them quite a bit. I'm all about interesting, playable cards. If ~only~ the jokers bleed off the edge, I'm mostly okay with that. If I can't read an index immediately, though, that's a deal breaker for me.

Get off my lawn, you whippersnapper! When I was your age, I had to reply to each post by mule!

I ~just~ got the Joker deck. Appreciated though! If you really need to part with your open one, let me know your price! (Dallas, TX here.)

Re: The suits.

I know you've gotten a lot of people commenting on your kickstarter updates that the custom suits are a strong reason they pledged. Keep in mind, though, that those responses come from an audience that prefers those already.

It's a lot like going to a Burger King and asking customers, "would you prefer McDonald's or Burger King today?"

This is your thing and the cards look good. I honestly don't know if the pledges would change for the better or worse with alternate suits. Just note the bias in your sample.

Gambler's Warehouse and PlayingCards.net are the same entity in Dallas (Grand Prairie), TX. They do lots of kickstarters and I've actually seen them packaging orders in person when I've gone by their shop. I don't know if they'll only buy wholesale or if they'll do consignment for you, but I will second that suggestion.

Here's a bonus pic courtesy of some 6-53 year olds:

Nice piece!

No help here.
I was thinking about Mill, Oasis, and Ripples but you are showing none of those. I'm looking through a 1911 reference and an incomplete 1924 reference. It's curious that yours show samples at 50 and 60¢, when the (gilded) Congress prices (including Delft) from 1911 list at 50¢.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: The Smoke - Illustrated Playing cards

**This is just my opinion. I'm rarely this petty.**

With that said, I'm surprised that typeface (Goodfellow, et al.) hasn't gone the way of Comic Sans.

Asylum,
Royal Mischief,
The Smoke.

P laying C ards  >:(  There's no cohesion there.

I like these quite a bit otherwise. That type is a deal killer for me. Good design has good type.

Wow. Very nice! How does High Finish feel in comparison to Air-Cushion Finish?
It's very smooth. Not a glossy, slippery smooth, but very smooth.

Air-Cushion Finish vs High Finish is much like comparing each side of a sheet of Masonite.

If I'm looking at reflected light down the length of the card, I don't see a "texture" per se, but you can see that the sheets went through the rollers lengthwise.

While you can't feel it at all, the cards suggest a wavy, one direction texture just as new corrugated cardboard might hint at the layer below the flat surface sheet. Make sense?

My 2 opened decks (G ace, 1 pack tax stamp, modern tuck, 1965) are in pretty good shape. I'm basing my observations from them. None of the decks in the brick box are opened.

I already had a red / blue pair (complete, opened) of High Finish Rider Backs, but I didn't think I'd ever have a brick of sealed decks! 6 red, 6 blue, perforated USPCC stamps.
