A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: A few neat decks..
« on: May 23, 2014, 10:43:47 PM »
Mint, sealed Extra Congress 606 c1895.. This deck is just fantastic, the wrapper itself has to be seen to be appreciated... It has a tuck flap that you can pull out without having to rip or tear to take the deck out and is sealed with the very early USPC growling tiger Stamp.. i will have to post a pic of this as it is wonderful... the deck is Gold Edged and has great spiderweb backs and the flesh toned Dundreary Joker.. an extremely classy deck of cards..

Mint, Sealed Derby No. 30 by APCC c1900.. The scan doesnt do the wrapper justice. Just a Beautiful and Quite rare deck from the American Playing Card Co. with an extra added bonus of having a 2nd joker as the sample card!.. I have another example of this deck with a different, equally wonderful Joker...

Some of my Favorites. May any viewer enjoy them
1st up.. This is the only example of this deck that i've seen that is complete.. It's made to look like a Military Backpack (the deck) with the Bedroll (A sleeve of Poker Chips) The Sleeve of Chips is VERY fragile and are barely attached to begin with. The Deck opens by pulling on the Roll of Chips.. I'm sure that these were ripped off on the first try, used in a game or 2 and then lost to the ages...They were issued by the New York Consolidated Playing Card Co. c1898 for the Spanish American War... a very cool deck...

I've been collecting cards since i was 15 years old...going on 53 now..ugh  I collect Pre-1930 American & Foreign decks. It's VERY hard to say what my favorites are as there are just so damn many great decks of cards out there! But, if pigeonholed, i'd have to say that early War/Military and historical decks are at the top of my list followed closely by Early Advertising, Transformations, and Standard decks.. As a sideline i collect Wide Congress 606 decks. Since the begining of this year I have become an avid supporter of many of the great Kickstarter decks that have been put out... lots of great decks!! I'm looking forward to adding my voice to the discussion of this GREAT hobby and hopefully expose it to new collectors. for the life of me i still can't understand why it's not a more popular collectible... the Artwork, History, Printing/design techniques, Displayability, education value (you can learn a hell of a lot from them there 52 cards... well the Non-standard ones.. lol)... it all adds up to a fascinating hobby!

Hello Don, I collect any deck that catches my eye!... These days, after 35+ years of collecting, i mainly collect rare US & foreign decks... but since they are so expensive , few and far between.. at least for me who has 2 children going into college and another finishing college..i have been concentrating on Early, Wide Congress 606 decks... but even those that i don't have rarely turn up. So i've become a Kickstarter Addict.. (What my lovely children call me!)... I really like what all these young, graphic artiste, computer saavy hotshots are designing... some really great decks... But I will be posting some nice old stuff to show them what REAL playing cards were like! :-) lol

Cheers... Slowhand

My hope is to for all the "Newbies" out there to give a good look at the Older decks that really make this a FANTASTIC and Educational Hobby!.. now if i can just figure out how to post pictures of some of my decks! lol...
