The Virts is making a deck and they are saying that it is designed specifically for flourishing.

Sounds pretty interesting. I'm just curious as to how a deck can be made for flourisher's, as in stock, finish, and design  :o
If I were an eskimo, I would build my igloo next to a supermarket.

All I can say is, Its about time. A Singaporean deck that would not cost a bomb for Singaporeans :) Maybe the Virts will even drop by here at some point.

Think handling, and a nice design is a bonus.
It will most likely be engineered to handle well and be balanced in a flourisher's hand.
Unlike collectors, we don't focus too much on how much kit a deck has.

I find it slightly amusing when collectors say that a particular deck handles well when it actually doesn't...

A stock that's supple but also can resist crimping.

A finish that's slicker than wet glass.

A design that does one of two things, depending on the flourisher's style.
1) A simple, streamlined design that allows your artistry to be center-stage.
2) A design with excellent patterns and colors, particularly at the corners, and either a thin border or no border at all.  It's also possible that a one-way design would make the deck more flexible for flourishing, allowing more unique flashes of color and design than a two-way back could deliver.

All I can say is, Its about time. A Singaporean deck that would not cost a bomb for Singaporeans :) Maybe the Virts will even drop by here at some point.

What, the Mana deck wasn't enough for you?  :))

You know who's making the deck, as in, it is USPC or not?

That is funny, considering that there's a decent-size contingent that never open the cellophane...  "Oh, it handles great!  It makes crinkly noises when I pass it from hand to hand, see?  And the foil is very shiny...  The embossing helps you really get a grip on it, too!"

It was printed by USPC, but I think Erik Mana is based -- AH, I remember now - he's from the Philippines.  I did have it wrong!

Yep. Its easy to get South East Asian countries mixed up. The only decks associated with Singapore so far are the white blue tunes, made here, and the Visions, designed here.

Probably a borderless deck, with big bold colors going off the edges, to make fans look dramatic. I'm curious if they are making the faces something new, like not even bothering to do pips but instead making it purely look good while flourishing.

No offence to you, Paul, but I find what you said hilarious.
A fan is so basic, a deck is not going to be designed just to look great in fans. Cardists like HANDLING. Design is a definite plus but is not an absolute necessity. The actual movements will catch people's attention more than the cards will.

EDIT: I'd like to mention that pretty much any deck that comes out of USPC's factory with good enough quality control handles very well. There isn't as much to be tweaked with today's options as far as handling is concerned as there used to be. Premium stocks? All discontinued/new standards as far as I know. Magic finish? It's slowly becoming the new standard finish, it's safe to assume that absolutely no handling-oriented deck would skip on it.

Ok you got me with the fanning decks BUT a deck that is specifically designed for flourishing will not just have fans in mind.

Which Paul never implied in the first place. It's just that the handling side of it just can't really go wrong to begin with.

He may have been assuming that it would use looks in order to display fans. Anyhow, Handling can go wrong, the infinity for example was a horrid deck in terms of handling and that, HAD magic finish,

I have to agree.  Modern aesthetic, but still traditional in design.  Nice.

I'm really liking the look of this deck! - Not only are the court cards borderless, something we all love, but they are very simplistic, something from D&D's decks that we've loved also! Is it me, or does the red pop more than standard Bicycle colors?

I am liking that they made the queens more attractive and younger. Not like the standard queens which are older and less attractive. Not that it's bad. But don't you think the only females in the deck should look more appealing?

+1 to borderless courts

Yah, I'm iffy over the matter too. I like the geometric shapes, but the circle in the middle puts me off about it. Also, based on the video, I believed they've used an un-admirable shade of red.

I really like. I think it's simple and not over powering, but will still grab attention and it's not boring. I think they made exactly what they set out to.

New pictures of the Virts deck Ace of Spades. Its actually scliced straight out from the back design itself if you look closely.

Woaw, that Ace of Spades looks amazing!  :D

Really glad to see that the Ace of Spades fits the back well, since I see some decks where the court cards, picture card, ace of spades or jokers doesn't really fit the backs.. but by what I have seen so far, I think the backs and the faces fits each other perfect! And of course, overall it looks simple and elegant  :)

Does this deck actually have a name yet?  Or a release date?  Teasers get annoying when they're drawn out for too long.
this deck is called the virtuoso deck and is a limited launch edition. It's estimated launch date is sometime mid December tentatively. All my info is from the virt insider Facebook page :)

I've been discussing about the deck with Huron and he has told me that the deck with be released tentatively around December 13.

Much appreciated to you both!  I'll add that intel to the NDR.

You might want to mention their new website for this deck: http://thevirts.com/launchedition/

You might also want to mention that "definite date": 17th of December or earlier

Not to mention that this deck is a limited edition, designed to commemorate their first deck release

Oh, and don't forget about those "more images" too! (See Below for a Compilation of most images found on their site.)

I am loving the looks on this deck, and I will be right up there waiting in line to get my hands on one of these. Hopefully, the price won't be too steep.

...and mention that only people on the VIP list (a.k.a. people who subscribed to the newsletter at thevirts.com) will be eligible for the pre-sale.  More accurately, being on the VIP list in essence "reserves" a deck for you - however that works.

If I had to guess, I'd say they're not even at press yet and won't go to press until early next year.  So when they take in all the pre-release orders, however many that happens to be, that will be the minimum size of the print run.  If more people pre-order, more decks will get made.  Mind you, that's just a guess.

New info from the VIP mailing list:

Preorders will begin "soon", sometime during the Christmas/holiday season, so presumably before 2 Jan 2013.  Regular order taking doesn't begin until late February, when the deck will be released.  However, I wouldn't bet on their being any decks left by then.  (Join that list, folks!)

Pricing - not too bad, really.

Here's the pre-order packages offered.

1) The Curious - the one-deck package
A single deck with a digital Virtuoso poster: $8.95

2) The Hobbyist - the two deck package
Two decks, the poster and video tutorial "The 7-Second Pirouette": $17.90

3) The Casual Cardist - the three-deck package
Everything in 2), one more deck and video tutorial "The Rubix Opener": $26.85

4) The Serious Cardist - the five-deck package
Everything in 3), two more decks and video tutorial "Squeeze": $42.50 (save $3)

5) The Artist - the brick package
Everything in 4) plus seven more decks: $99.45 (save $7.95)
If you use PayPal, you will have the option to order 5) with "Split Pay" - two charges of $50 each, thirty days apart from each other.  If you don't have the full price now, this is a pretty nice option to have.

Now, here's the part that really sucks, timing-wise: if you're on the VIP list, you'll get an email with only ONE HOUR'S NOTICE before pre-orders begin with the link to go to for ordering.  It could show up at 3am your time, there's no way to know.

To be honest, the Virts are doing an extremely good job at this! It's organised very very well, the deck looks fantastic, the extras are an awesome bonus and it is exclusively made for CARDISTS!  :D Cannot wait! I'm getting myself a brick!

They are going to start selling them at 8 PM EST. However people on the VIP list will be able to purchase them an hour earlier. If anyone is planning on picking them up in bulk and would be willing to sell me 3 decks or so I would be very grateful! Or if anyone is simple feeling extra generous and wants to add on some to their order that would be awesome. I have work and I won't be back home until 5 hours or so after the release. I have a feeling this will sell out rather quickly and I have been looking forward to these cards for sometime now, so if anyone could help me out I would be forever grateful! I am also willing to make some trades if that will entice some people, just send me a PM so I can give you a list of decks I have to trade!

another overpriced deck...I'm really sad that limiting deck runs then overpricing them seems to be the flavor of the month for playing cards. Also not buying the whole "made for cardists" thing since it's a standard deck with a custom design.

oh well, never had much interest in it anyway

Overpriced? It's only $8.95, it's not that overpriced imo.

I only just signed up 45 minutes before they were up for pre-sale and still got my email with the link. I ended up going with the "THE SERIOUS CARDIST" 5 deck package.

I'm very familiar with Virtuoso from youtube. Their videos were instrumental to my learning what I know of any cardistry.  I was delighted to have the opportunity to pick up their first released deck of playing cards tonight.

I was on the list and got the email last night, but I opted not to buy any.  It's not that it isn't a good-looking deck, because it is.  But I buy enough decks as it is and I knew there were other people out there who'd be more interested than I was in them and I could think of other decks that I'd rather own.  Oh, and I'd like to have a vacation this year, and maybe buy a car next year!  And keep my wife from either divorcing me or or killing me in my sleep by dumping my playing cards on me...average deck is 3.3 ounces...I have maybe 1400 decks now...that's 288.75 pounds/131.25kg!  That could hurt...

Don, that won't kill you. it would be like having me on top of you complemented by a 10kg bag of rice :P My brother can take my weight on his ribcage (surprisingly) but he cannot breath, since I am on his ribcage on one knee. he is scrawny and older than me but 18 months. But you wouldn't die from the weight unless it was on your ribcage in one designated spot. But glad to hear you passed on the deck Don to let others get in on it. :D

What do you guys think about the flourish tutorials that have been included by email?
Watched one so far and things seem quite good to me.

They are quite good! Squeeze is a huge bonus, it's a very cool flourish. The Rubix opener is useful but the seven second pirouette can be easily achieved after some practice without a download.

the first two extras are not all that great. It's fairly easy to learn the pirouette from any youtube tutorial, and the rubix opener is pretty  meh. Squeeze is an excellent cut and one of my favorites, and if you aren't able to learn it from the somewhat poor tutorials online, the video will probably be able to teach you well. I was able to learn it without much difficulty from free videos, but I'm sure the video by the virts is much better for learning. Definitely worth picking up for any flourisher/cardist

here's a cool add on to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOSNzcOLNuo

I'm jumping on the Squeeze love train as well. I learned it from Decknique back in the day and didn't find much use from the other tutorials but I'd recommend Squeeze as it's still a great flourish.

If you dropped your body weight onto him, landing on that ribcage with just one knee, you could easily kill him.  A hundred-pound weakling could kill him with the right force to the sternum or hyoid bone.

My friend, a SINGLE deck of cards can kill you, if it strikes the right place with the right amount of force!  If one can be killed with a ten-pound (4.54kg) hammer, I don't think it would be impossible with enough playing cards.

Even your innocuous 10-kg bag of rice can kill you, if it's used to close your windpipe.  Haven't you ever wondered why rice has been replaced by birdseed at most weddings these days?

But, in an effort to not get too tangential, yes, a deck of Virtuosos can kill you...  :))  Good thing I didn't buy any!

  • Ugh, I wish I had money for THAT deck!
Got an email update on the pre-orders placed for this deck. Huron says that USPCC has been slow on responding to emails and the like so they (USPCC) have set a definite date on when these will ship. And that date is March 25th-29th! I am not familiar with how the whole process works so I am unclear on if this means it will be shipped to the consumers on this day or to the Virts on this day. Which in turn, the Virts will ship it to us.

If it's USPC setting the shipping date, that would be the date they're shipping to the Virts.  Expect to see this deck in early-mid April if not later.

Ah okay thanks for the quick insight once again Don. Very much appreciated. This deck has honestly become forgotten with me over the long span from pre-orders to actual shipment. I'm only looking forward to receiving mine and shelving them at this point.

  • Ugh, I wish I had money for THAT deck!
Just got an email update from the Virts. The decks were ready to ship from the USPCC on the 29th and have been moved to their shipping facilities. Look forward to receiving my decks!

I'm sure they will be. Almost all cards released in recent times have been on eBay, if not all. It's just a matter of how expensive they'll be and if you're willing to pay that amount.

Where I can buy this deck in on-line?

First, welcome to the boards!
Second, the deck hasn't yet been released, so no one is selling it yet.
Third, the post before yours is by a retailer in the UK who WILL be carrying it when it's available.

Read what was written before you and you'll be amazed at the wealth of information you'll find...unless you're in the LOL-A-Query-Um, in which case it's every being for themselves!  :))

From what I'm reading on the Virtuoso Twitter page it has been acknowledged by virtuoso that those who preordered have started to receive their decks. Although I have not recieved mine yet, I'm sure I will soon. Virtuoso also answered a customers question, if the decks would also be sold on the website once they become available? Yes they will be sold on the website. I would imagine that will happen once all the preorders are sent out. Welcome to the forum.

Yeah I think some people said they got theirs on this thread. I haven't gotten my decks yet but I'm patient. The question is, if the Virts will be selling these decks on their website, will it be the Launch Edition or will it be another print? I know they said a while back that the Launch Edition didn't sell out but that was a long time ago.

I received mine the other day.  I wrote Huron to congratulate him and his team on a job well done.  We had a nice conversation and he was very grateful to hear good things about the product they worked so hard to create.  He also mentioned that even he hasn't received his yet (he's in Singapore), but is anxiously awaiting for them to arrive.

Mine came today.
Holy... just... wow.
The box is awesome. Heavy, matte, and very classy.
The back? Thin borders make for awesome fans, and that stroboscopic spin effect is phenomenal.
Faces are REALLY cool, and tie in with the minimal design perfectly.
They handle awesomely, but they're tricky to faro.
I was a bit disappointed with the lack of jokers. You get 4 ad cards. But the backs all fit in to make a 4X larger version of the back, so that's cool.

Awesome, awesome deck.

That's really good news! Mine's probably going to be waiting for me in my mailbox on Monday so I still need to wait a bit. I'm excited though! Wonder why the opted for no jokers and decided to do all ad cards. It's not like we don't know who they are. We bought the deck! Off of presale too!

Expect great things. And if you can do the pirouette, expect greater things.

The lack of jokers was underwhelming, but hey. At least the idea with the ad cards was cool and fresh.

(sorry for the crappy quality)

Jokers are usually left out of a deck for flourishing since it adds unnecessary thickness. This is a deck for flourishers made by flourishers after all. ;)

True, but there's still flourishes where 2 jokers can be pretty nice to have.
Magic and cardistry blends use them a lot for reveals. Even though this deck is completely cardistry oriented, I think they could have done much more with the extra cards.

I reckon the ad cards are rather innovative. With the right patter, the jokers required for an effect  can easily be replaced with any 2 cards of the same value and color. But 4 ad cards becoming a larger art piece has never been done before. So I am in favor of the ad cards. Moreover, 54 cards can harly fit into my porper clip :D

As I see it, you can simply treat the ad cards as non-identical jokers.  There's no law that states a joker has to have a clown or a king on a bicycle with the word "Joker" on it somewhere...

Received my order today and opened a deck. From what I visually see, it's a very attractive deck and one that, although simple, makes me want to take 'em out of the tuck and look at them again right after I've put them away. I think part of the draw for me is the fact that they aren't super complicated or intricate.

Haven't had the time to play with them a lot but as of now, it seems like a good deck! I have a suspicion they'll probably handle like most custom decks printed by the USPCC anyway so I'm not expecting to be amazed.

Based on everyone's comments (at least everyone who picked this up), I should be regretting not getting any for myself.  But I learned quickly into starting this hobby of mine that I would never own every single deck I wanted, never mind every single deck out there.  There's just too many of them!

This deck is much more about the design than the performance, because let's face it, the majority of custom decks made these days at USPC handle just fine right from the box and the only major difference between them physically is thickness/stiffness of stock - and even that can be variable within a single print run!  I've said before, Magic Finish became the great equalizer, making all decks perform like all other decks.

I would only regret based on the design itself. With that said, I can post a bunch of pictures so you can see what we all see and not regret anything :)) But kidding aside, that's why I thought it was safe to say that this deck would probably handle like any other custom deck out there. Not a bad thing at all though because I've grown fond of Magic Finish.

Yeah me too but the more I look at the deck, the more I don't care. This deck works with ad cards that explains what it is and who the creators are. I mean a traditional joker would be cool but I think they still made a good decision.
