I am a sucker for new decks with antique backs, so I want to pick up a red /blue set of Serpentines to use for poker. Opened but little used.  If you've got some you can sell, let me know. Thanks.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / DC views deck v DC now
« on: June 24, 2016, 01:00:08 PM »
Was in DC a few weeks ago, and I thought it would be fun to compare some of the views from my 1910 Bosselman "Washington Views" deck.  Below are some of the comparisons.  Note particularly that the cards switched the north and east views from the Washington Monument.  Actual east is labeled north and actual north is labeled east (unless they switched the White House and the Capitol after 1910 and I just didn't hear about it).

So, I was using the black and blue Tycoons at my monthly poker game, and at one point we realized we had a few black cards in the blue deck (and I lost that hand).  I need some reds so that doesn't happen again.  Don't care about the tuck box as long as the cards are in good shape.  I'll pay $6, shipping included.  PM me if you have one you are willing to sell.

Found this in an old USPCC publication.  Anyone know if the two riders are supposed to represent anyone in particular?

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / 2 Hornet decks, or not
« on: February 05, 2016, 03:57:10 PM »
Bought two separate Hornet decks recently online, only to find no hornet cards.  Just a Rambler deck and a Pedal Bicycle deck, and joker on the Pedal deck looks like it is from a different set of cards because the corners are cut a bit differently.  Oh, well.  All part of the fun.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Didn't know they sold gilt edge Aviators
« on: December 04, 2015, 05:51:09 PM »
Picked up two decks of Caravan cards on ebay.  Hadn't realized they were still sealed.  When taking them out of the box, I noticed they are aviator cards but  with gilt edges.  Seems a bit much for a generic brand like Caravan, but maybe Caravan was high end generic?  Hard to see the gilt edges in the pics, but you can see how the box reflects off the sides of the cards.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / 937 Lifebuoy Playing Cards
« on: October 21, 2015, 11:30:08 AM »
Got this box of 937 Lifebuoy cards in a lot of cards I purchased off ebay, but I don't think the cards in the box are original.  Far as I can tell, the cards are from an old Russell Torpedo deck.  I was thinking maybe Lifebuoy was a generic Russell product, but the tax stamp on the Lifebuoy box looks to be N. Y. C. C. Co.  The only other LifeBuoy deck I was able to track down was a 938 LifeBuoy, but it has an S.P.C. Co. tax stamp.  Any ideas on the history of these decks?

Also, does anyone know around when the Aviator box changed from prop plane to jet?

Thanks for the help.

I bought a red and blue deck of five-hundred cards for cheap on ebay to use for poker, but the blue deck had a bad card.  I'm looking for a used blue five-hundred deck to replace that one.  No box needed.  Preferably with this back design.  Let me know if you have a spare that is not too beat up.

Thanks.

Clay

I'm looking for some Pullman poker size decks in decent shape.  Need in two different colors.  Opened is fine, I'd like to be able to play with these.

Let me know if you have any you are willing to part with.

Thanks,

Clay

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Question re: Bicycle tuck boxes
« on: October 12, 2015, 04:11:41 PM »
Quick question I'm sure someone can answer for me.

When did Bicycle cards switch from older tuck box to newer tuck box?

Anyone have a pictoral history of Bicycle tuck boxes?

Thanks for the help.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Arrow Playing Card Co.
« on: October 01, 2015, 12:56:17 PM »
Just bought a double deck of Arrow Playing Cards.  This ace lists 734-754 Mather St as their address, and the ace in Hochman has an address of 800 So. Sibley.  Anyone know which address was first and if there were any other addresses?  Any other tips as to dating these decks other than address?

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Interesting KEM / Brown & Bigelow deck
« on: June 12, 2015, 03:38:56 PM »
Came across this deck on ebay.  I'd never seen the back before, so I scooped it up.  Also, I'd never seen a KEM deck with Brown & Bigelow branding on it.

By the partial tax stamp, I place it between 1940 and 1964, but after that things get fuzzy.  The "Keep Your Kem Cards CLEAN" card mirrors the text and format of the earliest KEM Playing Cards, Inc. decks from 1935-1937, but they changed the format a bit and squeezed in Brown & Bigelow Remembrance Advertising on the bottom.  Also uses the "KEM Playing Cards, Inc." company name in the copyright, but that name was not in use after 1937.  I am sorely tempted to open it up and check the Ace of Spades.

Anyone have any theories about this deck and how KEM and Brown & Bigelow would have been working together?

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Latest additions to my KEM collection
« on: April 07, 2015, 10:29:22 AM »
It's been a good quarter for my KEM collection.  4 new 1st gen Neillite cases, two new clamshells, one new box and some awesome cards (Cameo (C342), Seascape (C87), Kent (C342), Pinochle (C140) and the one I still haven't found a name for, Cosmic Gas Earth (C140).   The business card is actually one of the cards from the Pinochle deck.

Here's an page from an old catalog selling playing cards.  The page I found the image claimed it is from the 1923 catalog.

Just saw this on eBay, and it looks like a neat item.  Playing card salesman's kit with samples.  Not what I collect, but I thought someone her might be interested.

Scooped these up on Ebay.  Excellent condition.  The case was a bonus.  Just need the Pinochle back for the period set.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Help naming an old KEM deck
« on: December 03, 2014, 11:47:24 AM »
Picked this deck up on Ebay recently, but I can't track down the name of this type of back.  Ace date code is C140.  Anyone know it?

Update - deck name is Stratosphere

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Magnin size Kem playing cards
« on: October 20, 2014, 12:50:53 PM »
Anybody know the story behind the KEM magnin size playing cards?  I just picked these up.  They are 3.5 x 2 inches, so narrower than a bridge deck.  My deck is dated October, 1941.  Just wondering if these had any special use or purpose.

Introduce Yourself / Howdy
« on: October 18, 2014, 01:03:08 AM »
Chuqii from Texas here.  I found the Discourse while trying to track down information on KEM decks and cases which I've just recently begun collecting.  I've always loved cards, and I like the old KEMs because even a 70 year old deck is still sturdy enough for my monthly poker night.  Oh, and I like old inlaid poker chips as well.
