This is a great idea! I have a question, is this for any card related contest, or just bigger ones hosted by bigger companies? Could there be some youtube contests mentionned here or not?

Simonart - I know we have an international, multilingual user base here at the Discourse, but the majority of the people here are probably American - meaning they might be confused at your use of numeric European dating conventions.  It gets particularly confusing on dates that are equal to or less than 12 - for example, for Americans, the Independence Day holiday (July 4th) this year would be 7/4/12, which you would write 4/7/12.  With no clues to know which number you're using as the date and the month, an American would read 4/7/12 as April 7th, 2012, and assume you're simply living in the recent past...  :))

I usually use European-style dates in my KS report every week, but I tweak it for better understanding by Americans by writing out the month or at least an abbreviation of it.  For example: since it's after midnight where I am, it's now Sun 24 June 2012.

I knew there was a difference. I had just ended writing the list, when I said to myself that this problem could occur. I'll change dates. And you can put in any contest if you like. Also the youtube contests.

That's pretty scary. They appeared in an instant and disappeared the next second. They are as well in my friends list, but the link to their page is unclick-able, and I can't erase or block them either.
When trying to send them a message, it says their email address is invalid. Perhaps that is the issue. I hope so.

Oh man, I wouldn't understand why they suddenly would go. Everyone loved their deck, so it has to be a technichal problem. I won't erase the competion, cause maybe they'll be back in a few hours...

Or maybe they have nothing to do with the deck. I don't know why someone who designed this deck would suddenly disappear like this.

Just go by view count. If the topic's views are increasing by at least 10 per day, then you know you're doing something right.

One more 24-hour contest starting now and ending at 11:30 EST tomorrow night!

This one is a little like the popular "guess how many Jelly Beans are in the jar" contests. The ORNATE version involves the PURPLE Brick Box. How many COMPLETE diamond shapes are VISIBLE on all 6 sides? The only hint I will give is that the Bottom is similar to the Top EXCEPT it is split down the middle (so they can ship flat) and has a couple small areas with the grey color. First person to guess correctly or guess closest WINS. ONE GUESS PER PERSON PLEASE.

WINNER gets a full set of the Custom Brick Boxes!

We have a thread for contests, as Lara pointed out, and it was once sticky, as Alex pointed out.  The problem was the guy that was maintaining it basically abandoned it and people stopped posting contest or other content (tongue-twister!).  After it didn't see an update for months, I unstuck it.  However, if you guys are up for keeping it regularly updated, I'm more than happy to re-stick it.  Use Lara's link and post away - or we can make THIS the new sticky topic!

I say use this as the new one.  I can append the old topic to this.

Y'know what, I'm just gonna go ahead and do all that - add the other thread to this one and stick it to the top of the forum.  Keep it going this time!

Are there really so few contests out there, or is no one willing to post them?

Since the originator of this topic appears to have abandoned it, I'd gladly accept a volunteer to keep it going and find new contests.  Mention if they are "open to the public" contests, as opposed to stuff like the Club 808 contests which require being a member of a group.  Also mention if it's a random drawing and/or if some skill and/or knowledge is required, like a cardistry-based contest or a trivia contest with a winner chosen randomly from all correct answers, etc.  Mention any requirements, i.e., a specific deck, a video camera, a still camera, editing hardware/software, a minimum age for participants, etc.

Our 2013 convention will be held in Las Vegas from Oct. 16 to 19. The venue is the Tuscany Suites Hotel and Casino located about 10 minutes walk east of the Strip at 255 East Flamingo Drive http://tuscanylv.com/  We have a terrific rate at $50 per weekday night and $100 on Friday and Saturday plus applicable Nevada taxes. Those who attended the 2008 convention will remember the Tuscany, its amenties and the extra large suites.

I like that you're posting a convention notice, but this is a thread on contests.  What I will do, though, is move this to a separate thread and sticky it.  I'm in 52+J myself!

is it worth it to join 52+ J.  it seems like a old group of vintage deck collectors who desperately need some young blood.  I can't really tell cos they try to make it a secret society with a $27 fee.   wish they would give me a teaser to their forums.  i just can't make the call to join with the information they give.  i do know they are nicely nested on google search with all the exploring i have done.  they come up a lot but their website is a brick wall.

That's largely because that membership fee helps keep the lights on.  It also pays for their print publication, "Clear the Decks".  There's an web version of all the issues of CTD in the Ask Alexander database, open to CARC members.

If you have an interest in vintage decks, it's THE place to go, really.  They team up with other groups as well, like Chicago Card Collectors and International Playing Card Collectors, for some of their conventions.  Last year, it was a team up with Chicago held in Erlanger with a tour of the factory at USPC.

Now, if you have more comments about 52+J, perhaps a new topic would be in order?  :))

Collectable Playing Cards will soon be launching the 1000-Deck-Club. A paid membership club that will release 6-8 decks per year with a 1000 deck press run, that only members can purchase.

They are having a contest to name the 2nd deck being released for club members.  If they choose one of the names suggested they will send that person 6 free decks once printed.  So, take a look at the picture, and suggest a name… Good Luck!

I think why I often overlook the stickies is that the moved/locked topics are in the same color. It kind of goes straight in my "ignore that" side of my brain. And this one is way over here in the conversation parlor, which I don't relate to playing cards. I relate it to Badass kickstarters, shaving, and other hobbies. In the tease the cat with a laser pointer world we live in, I don't think I'm ever doing just one thing on a comp at a time haha. It's incredibly easy to overlook and miss things like this.

The studies are right - multitasking isn't all its cracked up to be!

A locked topic's title is presented in italics and has a padlock icon, while a sticky topic is in bold and has a pushpin icon.  Additionally, the color isn't exactly the same - locked topics have a much paler shade of whatever color is being used - purple, lavender, etc., I don't know the exact shade and its name.  The shade difference are about the same as the shade differences used in multiple nested quotes.

PFC AND EPCC ANNOUNCE THE SECOND ANNUAL PCF DECK DESIGN COMPETITION

NEW YORK - After what was a very successful first effort, PlayingCardForum.com (PCF) and the Expert Playing Card Company (EPCC) have decided to hold their second annual design competition for playing card deck designers.  William Kalush, president of EPCC and sponsor of the contest, stated that “the initial contest was very beneficial for all parties involved - the artist, the forum and Expert - so it seemed natural to make it a regular, annual event.”  Tom Dawson, owner of PCF and president of the 52 Plus Joker Club (52+J) for playing card collectors, commented that he was in full agreement with Mr. Kalush and was pleased to be hosting the contest on his forum.

Originally known as the “Discourse Deck Design Contest,” the PCF Deck Design Competition will follow the format of the first competition almost exactly.  The contest will be organized by PCF’s Chief Operating Officer, Don Boyer, in coordination with Mr. Kalush, Mr. Dawson and 52+J Vice President/PCF Vice President Lee Asher.  Entries will be judged by the forum’s general membership by way of election, and the winning design will be produced by EPCC, with the winning artist receiving 432 copies (3 gross, or 36 dozen) decks of their design.  Last year’s winning design, the Evil Deck by Giovanni Meroni, is presently on sale and available at the Conjuring Arts Research Center’s online store - go to shop.conjuringarts.com for more details on the Evil Deck.

The contest time table will be as follows:

Tuesday, June 16, 12:00 AM EDT (04:00 UTC): the rules for the 2nd Annual PCF Deck Design Competition will be posted on PCF at http://bit.ly/1FguX3Q for advance review.

Wednesday, June 17, 12:00 AM EDT: the competition will begin the design review stage, which will last for four weeks.  Designers are encouraged (though not required) to post their designs at PCF’s Design and Development message board for the membership to review and provide comments.

Wednesday, July 15, 12:00 AM EDT: the official entry topic will be opened in PCF’s Playing Card Plethora message board.  Designers will have one week in which to post their designs and officially enter the competition.

Wednesday, July 22, 12:00 AM EDT: the entry phase will close and no further entries will be accepted.  Shortly thereafter, members will be asked to vote on their favorite design.

Wednesday, July 29, 12:00 AM EDT: the voting stage ends.  If one design has received a clear majority (any amount greater than 50%) of the vote, it will be declared the winner of the competition.  If there is a plurality, the two most voted-for designs will have a run-off election to last for two days, ending Friday, July 31, 12:00 AM EDT.

All artists and designers are cordially invited to participate in the competition!  Remember, the rules will be posted at http://bit.ly/1FguX3Q at midnight.
