To me, I put this into what I think of as a "Design" category of deck.

There have always been examples of these decks appearing, but recently I get the impression there are quite a few more. The reasons are not hard to imagine. A few huge KS projects and a zillion people who think "I could do that". And, from an isolated design perspective, they can.

It often IS good design. However, it's not always good playing card design. There's a crucial difference.

There are tons of examples of decks which are neither, a gratifying number which are both, but there are no small number of examples which are one but not the other.

Anyway, to me, this one falls into that "well, nice enough, but not my cup of tea" category.

I agree with this a lot, particularly the highlighted part. It is what separates a good designer from a good playing card designer. This deck falls into a grey area where traditional playing card design is sacrificed for whatever clever idea the designer has, and the more/bigger elements that are missing the more clever the idea has to be to make up for it.

Quite spectacular that back. If I could fan a deck properly I'd want one!
Interesting. I myself think it's quite boring since you can get the same fans by using any regular white or black deck by simply making reverse fans, or right hand fans. This is sometimes used by magicians to create blank fans (top card needs to be concealable like the AoD or a blank gaff) and snap their fingers before revealing all the pips being "back" in a regular fan.

Granted, you won't get the black/white edge on the fan that these have, but for me colors and patterns trump black and white any day.

I do recommend trying to learn fanning though, it makes you able to appreciate playing card design in a very unique way  :)

No mention of printer anywhere. Project creator consists of three names, no facebook connected.

Red flags ahoy!

Wow... The flames are there why?
I guess they didn't get the memo that said skulls is the thing to add to playing cards to make them cooler  ::)

MagikFingerz... I don't take it peronal. I should have waited to launch. Chance are, I'll need to relaunch anyway. The relaunch will clearly be after Civil is delivered considering Civil is starting to get printed next week. I expect to deliver the first or second week of Jan. My wife and I plan to set the standard on KS. We have principles also. We plan to deliver a good product even if it means digging into our own pockets.
Good to hear, RJ. If you relaunch, I'll be right there to snag an early bird.

There's black Masters? Not that I'd really care, but  ::)

EDIT: Nevermind, realized it was Shadow Masters. Derp.

I just thought I would pass it on in case you had not read it. I personally didn't back either of his KS so I can't really relate but sticking to your principles is key. I tend to fall away from them when it comes to KS.
Thanks anyway  :)

And don't worry, you'll also become cold and cynical when it comes to kickstarter soon enough :-P

Will not back this until his first campaign has been delivered.

I read this earlier and figured I would pass it on. This is the introduce yourself of the maker of this deck.

Trust me, I know all about this. But it doesn't change the fact that his first campaign is not fulfilled. It's nothing personal, I'm merely sticking to a principle. I DID back his first deck and I will probably buy this one when it becomes available.

From a purely logical and calculating standpoint it makes no sense to back this project, and letting a halo effect affect your judgement when it comes to kickstarters (or anything involving giving someone money) isn't a good idea in the long run. But I still believe, and hope, that RJ will deliver.

4 decks with the same back design? Granted, it's better than coming out with a new color every few months, but unless the decks have some other significant differences they just seem like they're pulling a Jackson Robinson without the creativity.

PS. Hey buddy  :D

I hear someone missed me  ;D

Those court card sizes needs to be standardized, seeing the Queen and King of Diamonds next to each other doesn't look good when the size of the court art is so different. I would also advise moving the indices closer to the edge (on all cards), which in turn would allow for larger court cards.

Regarding the box I don't mind having the back design on the back, as that just means you can see the back design without having to open the deck (good for those of us with crappy memory). If that is kept though, I would prefer it to cover the entire back of the box. A scaled version just reminds me of the standard Bee box, and probably a few others as well.
